Dorsal fins!!? Nate, those are canards. On the real one they act as control surfaces, and move up and down like elevators. FMS makes an 80mm version of this plane and the canards are functional on it. I have this 64mm version and love it!!! My first jet. I'm a terrible rc pilot and I fly this and really enjoy it. I would highly recommend it as a first jet to anyone.
Very cool!! Yeah, total brain fart for sure. I just forgot, but thank you!! Canards!! Why did I think Dorsal Fins!?!? Lol 😅 I thought they moved on the real thing though, so at least I got that right!! Haha 👍😎⚓️
Can I PLEASE make a recommendation; First, switch your radio to a RadioMaster with ELRS system. Second, use telemetry on everything RC that uses a battery. You can use the radio to call out your battery voltage at any specific time or amount. At the very least, setup a flight timer on the radio with audible readouts. Hit me up if you need some help and we can talk via email/voice or not. Love your reviews, but there is always more to learn and teach!! Happy flying my friend.
That final landing was awesome! Those little wings in front of the main wings are called "canards", and are an old feature of airplanes. The first powered flight plane, the Wright Flyer, had a canard. Many jets have canards, and aircraft designed by the famous Burt Rutan. The Rafale was the main competitor to the F-35 to be Canada's next main-line jet fighter. The Rafale is a 4.5 generation fighter jet, while the F-35 is a 5th generation jet. In the competition between the two, many supported the Rafale because it has two engines, something that is considered important for planes flying across the vast areas of Canada, the 2nd largest country in the world. But lobbying from the US, and the stealth capabilities of the F-35 eventually won the competition, and will be Canada's next fighter jet, replacing the CF-18.
Use a cheap voltage alarm that plugs into the balance lead. They work but not on a gen 2 battery. Thanks guys we all get excited and fly to long because it's so darn fun.
I don't know if everyone can appreciate how much more difficult a maiden flight (or any other flight, really) is, while on camera. It's like everything is fighting you, as soon as that record button is pressed sometimes. Great job. Great recovery. You can bend back gear. That Smart battery might be a little chubbier. But, hey. Im sure you have plenty more. Thanks for the review, guys. You got to fly an awesome plane. 👍
Nate dude NEVER BEND THE GEAR BACK in the airframe!!! Remove the gear and use plyers to grasp the rods and straighten them out. If you do this in the foam you will damage the foam in the opposite direction as well and you are doing more damage and you will still not get the gear rod straight. Remove the gear and straighten it out. Put it back and or fix the gear mounts in the foam then replace the gear.
That front gear is shock absorbing?!?!? How come they didn't make that a huge selling point! I think imma get one next paycheck!! This is why I watch you guys, you look at stuff others don't 😎😎😎😎
Nate and Abby I've heard really great things about that jet. I need to try one! By the way, the extra horizontals are called Canards. I agree it would be nice if they worked, but it seems like its very capable even without them. You two have a lot of fun together, that is nice to see. Great job on the maiden! I think if we try one I'll hand launch it with the gear off.
Great video I used to have an fms rafale 64mm over a decade ago and to be fair this airframe is touchy. Needs speed to stay in the air or else it drops like a stone. Also notorious for the bounce the air speed control is critical for smooth landing
I recently had a range mishap with my Tactic! First one that I can even remember. Lost a really good plane because of it too. Tossing that RX, but if it happens again I may have to let it go 😢😢😢 Love Tactic!! ❤️⚓️
I find this Rafale flies well and is very stable in high alpha. Moving the battery back an inch or so i.e only held by the rearward strap, allows more pitch authority for rotations during takeoff. However, too much nose up and the plane hasn't got enough power to climb out of alpha lock 😊
The fins on the front are called Canards, they act as assist elevators. that is just because some European jets don't use tail stabilizers, so the canards add that much more stability and maneuverability.
Viva La France, Viva La Rafale. Flies well, since it's a single seater All flight errors ARE pilot errors. You ALWAY'S ( git ) giddy enthusiastic on maiden's Nate.😃😃. Long time back I remember seeing a similar looking plane all Yellow, honestly think this one would to. Definitely be able to see it. Great videoing Abby.⚓️⚓️👍🧡💛💚👍😃😃👍⚓️⚓️.
The Reflex is good, but I can see why you did that. Yeah rudder makes a big difference, and all those scale details are nice too!! Would love to see how you ran your lights!! 👍💯⚓️
dorsal fin is kind of the one in front of vertical stab but what he is talking is canard or duck planes as some call it. Maybe other names but thats what I know them as.

I like this channel because the hosts are not like some other channels that have cropped up in the last year or two with these prima-donna phoneys that will say anything to increase their channel views, they know it all, their way is the best way of course, etc, etc. FMS Rafale is a bit of a fail IMO. Underpowered, short battery life, weak landing gear, It does look cool though. Some folks like to fly around high-alpha slow all day which this thing is just okay at out of the box - it can bet into alpha lock easily and hasn't the power to escape so don't go to far back with CG. Personally, I think FMS should make all of these 64mm planes into hi-performance versions. 6S power, sturdier landing gear, maybe a better way to grab it if people want to hand launch. An inrunner motor would be more efficient. I went ahead and changed power system in one of these to 6S inrunner 64mm and 70 amp esc. Now it is the aircraft it should have been from the start, faster, better vertical performance by far, no hi alpha lock, just power out of it, better battery life also. Simply a better model all around.
Yep canards, wonder if it's possible to make them active. Even if there's enough room for one servo you could activate them for elevators. Did that on a scratch built Eurofighter awhile back. It's like having thrust vectoring exhaust
Cool flight, sorry for the crash...were you thinking of trying high alpha fly? Quite many pilots like to have it in high alpha 😛 By the for EDF, especially on maiden flight .. usually only clock it at 3 minutes max .. only after a few flights then to increased on per 30 minutes (as EDF 30 minutes means a lot of different) to find a perfect timing ... Happy Flying
The jokes on me. I looked it up before checking that so many people had already answered the question. The term "canard" may be used to describe the aircraft itself, the wing configuration, or the foreplane.

I don’t recommend this plane if you live at higher altitude. I’m in Colorado and this thing BaReLy gets off the ground.. it has to be full throttle 100% of the time just to keep it in the air. I tried a 50 amp esc and higher KV motor with very little improvement.
