Phil that’s correct. I do think this video is geared more to a “ known combination “ and you are changing the cam timing and need to know if the change is going to affect the valve clearance. In any case, always check a “ new unknown “ build first.

Do you use a solid, dummy lifter for checking piston to valve clearance with this method, in a hydraulic roller engine? Once you are set up at the overlap / split point, check exhaust clearance at 10 degrees BTDC and intake clearance at 10 degrees ATDC. The 10 degrees is universal, whether it be small block, big block, Ford or Chevy engines, as long as radial clearance is safe. correct?

What if you hit coil bind before you hit piston?

Thanks for the upload, whats crazy is the small amount of views when i only came here as i was watching a factory walk through of a big name engine builder and they referenced this video for people to gain some knowledge :)

Use check springs. Adjust the lash the zero. Then you can open the valve as you rotate it as the valve chases the piston or on the exhaust while the piston chases the valve. You will see the difference and will easily find the tightest spot.
Then at the degrees of crank rotation for the tightest valve clearance, drop a center punch and measure the valve edge to piston brow clearance.
Method not approved for aluminum blocks, aluminum rods, and wicked engine. They have running factors to add to the equation.

Yeah easiest way to check it if you want to mash the valve into the piston as you’re over-compressing the spring with your wrench!
And he also didn’t tell you that without pulling the head and using the clay method- that you have absolutely NO idea what the radial clearance is. Very important to know the vertical AND radial clearances.
