I've never managed a job like that with a white T shirt and light coloured pants, and not got them covered in crap. That's an achievement in itself.

It's about time Lewis sorted that mess of a wireing he left last time it's good to see the other engine you put is running really well just go easy on it as it's been stood for years put some miles on it and change the oil maybe flush it to make sure all the old oil is completely out of it I hope you put a good rear box on as it will sound great then but enjoy driving it and hopefully you don't get big problems again mate 👍

I’m pretty convinced that the headgasket is the issue, original Goetze head gasket were coated wire a micro sealant. That sealant helped to seal the chg immediately after installation to all9w the engine to heat up normally before the heads were re-torqued after the engine cooled. If no micro sealant is on the gasket, coolant will initialy just seap in slowly and the more you run the engine the worse it gets.

Just a quick on when lifting or pulling engines try to get it strapped around the lower block rather than the silly eyes or inlet you run a risk of slightly separating the head just enough for it to blow or even stretch the head bolts a tiny bit

Excellent progress Josh, glad that old lump turned out good. Been there myself with second hand engines, always a 'fingers crossed' moment if you've not heard them run. Great vid.

I always use copper spray on head gaskets, and prematex aviation gasket sealant on paper gaskets... like inlet manifold or water pump gaskets etc.
Most newer cars have o-rings on the mating surfaces so its not needed these days. Definitely pays to use it on older motors tho.
I'd say your issue was not torquing the head correctly, Josh. Shit happens mate. I will say tho, when an engine overheats a few times the crank bearings can go soft and you get nasty bottom end knock a while later.
I'd put the original engine aside for now and get it rebuilt later down the track. Maybe port the head, high comp pistons, bigger cam...etc.

13:40 I have seen this so many times my friend. I believe you failed to follow the correct procedure to torque down the head correctly...
Also, could you get a straight edge on the head and the main block? If you see air through the bottom of it, it is shot. But something tells me you could have fitted a new gasket and would be able to use this engine.
We all make mistakes. It is a learning curve, my friend. Just a few simple checks and you could have had that engine running again!

A gasket doesn't fail like that unless it's not been fitted correctly.
Josh if you are reading this. Get a metal ruler and do the basic check.
That engine can be rebuilt and used again. Or sell it on and get your money back my friend.

Agree with what you've said! Also cleaning out the threaded holes for the Head Bolts as any crap will stop the Bolt from being fully down. Also a Quality MLS gasket will help reduce the chance of any failures. A cheap Headgasket will become more expensive later on. Also gives you the opportunity for Boost later on😊

Great little weekend engine swap. I also hate it when you have the same engine, then need to strip it down because a sensor, sump, mount is different

I'd get your torque wrench checked chap (or watch a video on it and do it yourself if you have the older type). I think it wasn't as tight as it should have been, either bolt length, thead depth or torque wrench not quite right. Were the compression rings even squidged on the gasket? 😆
Glad the old girl is nearly up and running, please change cog box goo and filter and diff goo - especially before your long road trip!
    Loving the episodes, superb stuff!

Josh just a heads up ...poke Lewis in the Eye and get him to sort out the mess...that wiring was an idiot getting excited...it needs him to put it back properly (its looking betterer already). Also in the future...clean and jetwash both engines before playing with them...loads easier..all best.

  • @berwhaletheavenger

Nice one! BMW rated both 2.5 M20's at 171 bhp but the older high compression one was closer to 180 bhp. The E34, E32 etc M20 M30 cars with Motronic 1.3 are catalytic converter prepped - you'll see a spare engine loom plug on the inlet manifold side for the lambda sensor used on cars with the cat fitted. 1.3 runs a lean mixture with less ignition advance to get the exhaust gasses hotter for the catalyst to work. It's worth fitting a better chip into the ECU as they go so much better with the extra fuel and ignition advance. You should see an extra 10 bhp and it'll feel quicker.

Is that definitely from an e30? Check the cylinder head if you haven’t for a number ending in 885 to make sure it’s a 2.5l engine.

Just finished the video. An early 2.5 with the later motortronic 1.3 ecu is then best combo apparently.
