Happy Birthday Susan! 🎁📚 That's awesome about the cookbook and that you shared your wishlist and your family used it! I have one too, so far a couple of friends have bought me things from it which is very generous! I'm also an Emily St. John Mandel, Donna Tartt & Madeline Miller fan. I knew that Galatea was her own invention, and I think it was very clever, so I don't think a 4 star rating is too generous, especially if you enjoyed it! I bought myself Sea of Tranquility (and devoured it) after loving Station Eleven last year, and then was lucky to recently find The Glass Hotel for $2 in great condition at a thrift store!! Which was very exciting! I'm buddy reading it late February with some book friends, and I can't wait!
Thank you for the happy birthday wishes, Heather! Isn't that amazing that I know someone who published a book! :) My very own step-daughter at that! She's an amazing cook! And actually enjoys it. :) Love to hear from fellow Mandel, Tartt, and Miller fans! I hope your buddy read of The Glass Hotel goes well. I ended up LOVING it, though the plot sounds ick all around. I just thought it was so, so good!
Happy Birthday!🎉🎉 Creepy houses scare me, so if they scare you, Salem's Lot will work... there's definitely lots of tension in that book that you can feel... which adds to the scare factor for me.
Happy belated birthday Susan and congratulations on your step daughter’s cookbook! It’s funny that you mentioned my recommendation of “Taking things hard:the trials of F. Scott Fitzgerald”, as I had checked with my library at the time and they did not have it. I got sidetracked and did not order it,but I see they now have it on the shelf. As I do so much reading, I divide my books into purchases and library selections. Deciding which I want to be a part of my collection can be challenging. Do you have a similar approach? Maybe an idea for a video? 🤔 I just finished “Baumgartner” by Paul Auster.Coming in at just over 200 pages, it was a wonderful book. There are gorgeous writing passages throughout the novel. I highly recommend. Happy reading. 🥰📚
Isn't that amazing that she published her own cookbook! It was a labor of love for her and the only way to get her step-mom to crack a cookbook. :) Just kidding!! (kind of) I definitely have a strategy as to what I buy and what I get from the library or Everand. But I break that strategy sometimes. I'll look into Baumgartner. Thanks for the rec!
Nice haul! A King book that is frightening psychologically and viscerally is Gerald's Game. It deals with child abuse, and it was the most frightening I read of his work so far.
I saw that you and Sarah were re-reading The Little Friend! (That was my first Tartt read.) I'll be eager to hear what you two think on a re-read. I'm excited to try Salem's Lot and it helps that it's YOUR favorite King novel! :)
You had a lovely birthday haul - how nice of your husband to check out your wish list! And your stepdaughter Rachel is lovely in that photo. Happy belated birthday!
Happy Belated Birthday Susan! 🎉🥳 Great book haul!! I’m a Steinbeck fan also and looking forward to your review of A Life in Letters. My favorite Steinbeck novel that doesn’t get talked about enough in my opinion is The Wayward Bus. Have you read it? I highly recommend it!! Enjoy your new books ❤️
Ok my little stone heart had to melt hearing your talk about your step daughters. Those books about Fitzgerald sound incredible. I've picked up 2 books that are on this years Canada Reads Debates. "Shut Up You're Pretty" by Tea Mutonji and "Bat Cree" by Jessica Johns. I'm really excited for both of these
I bet it's pretty cold in Canada to have your heart melt a bit! ;) Thanks!! Let me know how those two books go...you know I like those Canadian authors!
@@RoadReads if I did the math correctly, tonight is supposed to go between 0 to - 5 F. and possibly up to 5 inches of snow in my area... though I highly doubt we'll get the snow, it is supposed to be that cold tonight... good thing I've got a fluffy house coat and lots of hot chocolate to go with my books :)
Hi Susan! Happy belated birthday! Love your adorable top, but I remember you saying in a video you did not like the color blue! Only remember because it is my favorite. LOL!
Hey, friend! Grapes of Wrath made me SO DEPRESSED.... East of Eden - I remember liking it, but don't remember much about it, either! I met someone from Salinas once whose father had gone to school with Steinbeck. She said her dad was not a fan! LOL! Like you, I am super high on Madeline Miller right now. I just finished Song of Achilles and was so moved - I didn't think I would love it as much as I did Circe, but dang! That girl can write! Have you read any Kaye Gibbons? I think you would really like her - especially Charms for the Easy Life or On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon.
@@RoadReads Ha ha - yes, my sister in TN says it's cold. My memory of TN winters is they are far less cold than NS 😆 It is -6 degrees C today... which is 21.2 Fahrenheit.
Oh gosh that cookbook is awesome! Meb Keflezighi is go awesome- I have seen him and his book 26 Marathons almost made my top 10 books last year - if was great. I’m scared just thinking about reading a horror book 😂 I love biography. 👍
Happy Belated Birthday. I love Christmas book gifts. I recommend reading Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'. I was reading 'The Taming of the Shrew.' which referenced 'Heroides' - so I read Ovid for the first time and immediately bought the 'Metamorphoses' . His style is very accessible (I expected something dry and found myself amused) and if it suits your sense of humour it's really worthwhile.
I'm glad you liked it. He's my favourite ancient writer, funny and irreverent. For anyone who hasn't read the 'Heroides' they are a bit like Robert Browning monologues, ancient mythical women revealing more about themselves than they realise. @@RoadReads
Great haul! Since you mentioned you're fascination with Donna Tartt, I wonder have you heard of the podcast Once Upon a Time at Bennington College? It's about Donna and The Secret History, and the real life students and professor who inspire it. It's also about Bret Easton Ellis. It's a great listen!
Happy Birthday Susan!

Ooh I'm excited to hear what you think of Interview! I was obsessed with Anne Rice when I first read her :)
I’m a little nervous - but still excited- to give it a try! But hearing people love it or her helps! So thanks for sharing!! 🤩
Loved hearing about your step daughters. I also want to read Salem's Lot. Can't wait to hear what you think of it. And - happy belated birthday!
Thank you, Sherri!!
I'll keep you posted on Salem's Lot...hopefully to be read this year!
Gorgeous copies of "Salem's Lot" and "Interview With the Vampire"! Will be waiting for the review videos on those 🧛♂!
Really hoping to read both of them in 2024!
Happy Belated Birthday, Susan!
Thank you! 🥳

Happy belated birthday, Susan!🎉 Enjoy all your new books!

Salem’s Lot is my favorite King novel! I am rereading Donna Tartt’s The Little Friend and THAT has some scary snakes scenes in it! 😱🐍

Grapes of Wrath was soooo depressing… and not in the good way. 😁
Madeline Miller 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I’ll look into those books by Gibbons-thank YOU!! 🤩
I want to learn more about Zelda! Great haul. Neat cookbook.
Thanks, Tanya!

I am starting The Secret History today!! Thanks for your video. Happy birthday 🎉
