Fun Fact: This episode would later be continued twice in the show.
Where the chicken as well as his kids come for revenge.
To ask this, why the disturbances in this show? I'm always unsure if this is really a kids show, there's a lot of scenes I find it more traumatizing where it should be more suitable for adults
“This shouldn’t happen to a dog.”
-Courage
Not only this happened here in the pilot but the exact thing came from the actual episode where the chickens wanted revenge. Before that, this originally came from Looney Tunes
Ouch!
-Courage
@@XJIcequeen You got that right
Ahh yes, Eustace turning into a giant laughing monster-chicken. The OG nightmare-fuel from my childhood.
My favorite part of this was that hoppy way Courage runs. Even better when they decided to keep it for the series
This series is a great example of how to write a likable protagonist
I'm not sure about that. People always think that Eustace is like an antagonist to Muriel and Courage because of how he treats them and always gets hurt
@@martiangirl21 I wasn’t referring to Eustace
@@lloydau3610 Oh, sorry
@@martiangirl21 don't be. It's an honest mistake.
@@lloydau3610 Thank you ☺
The random Live action Portraits always made me laugh. 🤣
To anyone who grew up during the streaming era. You just had to be there to see how special TV was, Seeing this and then years later they green lit the series was so magical, I was so exited to see the Chickens from Outer Space again referencing the pilot was canon. TV was truly special compared to streaming.
A little detail that scared me when I was a kid was the chicken trying to shoot courage. At the time, I was used to thinking once the villains lose in whatever competition or challenge or fight they're in, that's it, they just lose, so when the chicken lost the series of challenges he was doing with Courage I was like "Ok that's it, Courage saved Muriel", only for the chicken to pull out a gun last second and just try to end courage right then and there was something new that I didn't know could happen. It kind of taught me early on that maybe not all villains are going to play fair and just accept defeat.
But this is traumatizing
Bad guys don't play Fair so you should play to win
@@MegaAvenger2 Exactly
If this pilot didn't won the award, we probably wouldn't have had this amazing show in the first place.
The most criminal things about your channel are
A. The low viewership
B. The fact that i only just now found out such an inspirational influence on my childhood has a UA-cam channel.
Love to see your future works, John!
i LOVED this short when it was on What a Cartoon show. and was extatic as a kid when it became a full blown TV show. Courage was a big part of my childhood and one of the first cartoon characters I learned how to draw.
TO THIS DAY a lot of my character design I still have the habit of drawing teeth and mouths like they were in Courage.
Love how Courage killed Eustace and they just go back to chillin.
Thus, a legend was born.
I love courage this is how it all started
Eustace deserved to be turned into a chicken for repeatedly scaring our boy Courage with that goblin mask! 😂
It’s always nice to catch up with Muriel and Courage ❤️ 👏🏼
I love how much the series still resembles the pilot. So many times I've seen shows stray away from their original idea and people just lose their love for the show.
I can actually remember when Cartoon Network used to air this every now and then, I grew up watching this show
6:11 I freaking love john dilworth's style of humor
A great pilot to a perfect show.
This short may not win an Oscar (lost to A Close Shave), but you sure gave us the best CN series ever. It is on the Top 10 of my CN cartoons ever.
First the boondocks now courage both release there Pilot Episode the same day has my birthday what a great gift
The One That Started Courage In the First Place and Was Inspired By Wallace and Gromit For It’s Premise From What I Heard
Woah I didn't know that now that you mentioned it though this totally makes good sense! A ton of Courage humor is based in silent mime like Gromit does and very simple and exaggerated silly surreal things, especially to do with birds!
Absolutely could see now a courage episode where there is a pair of evil trousers on the loose 😂

And thus, a legend began.
*John R. dilworth you are the reason why i got nightmares in my childhood*
I don't think he meant to do that. The scenes are what made it most gruesome

The beginning of a legend. Courage is best dog.
For Courage the Cowardly Dog, this is what started it all.

@@XJIcequeen Okay.
the pilot to one of the greatest cartoons ever
Such a classic, I remember this pilot would air on those sections of CN that played pilots while the actual Courage show would air
Ah, just as how I remembered it. I can't imagine the confusion kids had when they first saw space chicken appeared cooked in the series
I love when the creator of the lost media preserves it 🖤🖤🖤
The origin of my favourite cartoon
The best pilot debut of Courage the most beloved dog in cartoon history❤❤❤❤
Thank you for making our Childhoods Awesome!
I still remember watching this on “What a Cartoon” time flies.
Same, I have seen it plenty of times.. Sad moments but I have it on my Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost VHS tape
@@martiangirl21 I was really big into Scooby Doo and Courage, the movies were great. Do you remember the Scooby Doo and Courage crossover they had back around 2002? That was a dream come true to ten year old me. Cartoon Network had a week long marathon of both shows and there was basically an episodes worth of clips where the characters from both shows interacted with each other at Courage's house.
@@caviar_dreamz Omg yes!! I remember that.. I've seen many clips and I loved the ideas and the whole dialogue.. Truly I wasn't born until 2003 but not only I saw from one of those tapes or had seen some on UA-cam but I did see one where Scooby Doo and Shaggy were the unmasked creatures where Courage's teeth were shooting out when he was screaming
@@martiangirl21 You were born the same year as my little sister, she loves courage the cowardly dog too! We both loved watching cartoons with each other growing up, good times.
This is it, the origins of one of the most amazing cartoons ever made. Courage The Cowardly Dog, at least in my eyes, is one of the greatest cartoons to ever be aired on Cartoon Network. The aesthetic, the stories, the music, the visuals, and the creativity was what made it so amazing. Every episode brought new, unique, and terrifying horrors. I still remember seeing Ramses for the first time and being scared out of my mind alongside Courage. I've gotta say it John, you really cemented your name in the hall of great animators, and I'll always be a fan of your work.
Same, absolute masterpiece in early 2000 media
This explains so much about why this episode felt different.
Man!!!! The greatest TV pilot in history!!! Nothing more and nothing less
You need to admire how very little dialogue was spoken in this pilot
Like the fact that the only full sentence here was Courage’s “This shouldn’t happen to a dog” in the end.
Exactly
Every time I eat sunny side eggs I think of this short lol.
That neck snap at 2:03 was actually brutal
Haven't seen this since I was a teen and I'm pushing 40. Still amazing! Even some details I didn't notice when I was younger, like Courage's wild take with his tongue flopping out mirroring the flying saucer's ramp opening up.
2:00. Well that's a little bit dark. 😳 it killing those earth chickens by snapping their necks
Holy crap this was somehow even darker than the show. I love it😂😂
This short film maybe lost to Wallace and Gromit's _Close Shave,_ but this is where the horrors of Courage all started. This explained the events of why Chicken gets revenge on the dog for being roasted in the sequel.
It was 'A Close Shave' that won the year this Short got nominated.
@@OddOneOut665 My bad! I decided to edit it from _Wrong Trousers_ to _Close Shave_ to fix the issue.
Plus, that latter movie is the first appearance of Shaun.
THE CHEESE GROMIT 🐶 🧀
In an age where creators of shows aren’t even given their own work in a digital format only for corporations to delete it off the face of the earth for tax write offs this is just amazing. I’m so glad you still have this and that you’re sharing it to be preserved.
My favorite series growing up. Thank you John R. Dilworth!
The first and only Cartoon Network program ever nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short in the mid-90s (long before being greenlit as a full-fledged series in later years)!
This dark comedic nature of this short spelled out what was to become one of the best cartoon shows on the big CN!
Where it all began
I was _literally_ about to say that!
@@srbrant5391 Oh god, that's something my younger self would say.. I'm 21 now and I still find this short gruesome 😂
The weird thing? This show officially turns 25 *this year*.
Which means this short is turning 30.
So. Then why does it state 28th year anniversary?
@@layzy24 The pilot is 28. The show itself premiered in 1999.

At least both versions are in good quality.
@@DirgeHole-2866 That I can agree with
The beginning of courage the cowardly dog on Cartoon Network
I am heavily disappointed that people think that The Chicken from Outer Space isn't an Iconic enemy to Courage
Idk it doesn't immediately come to mind when I think of courage villains like Katz but underrated for sure
Katz and Le Quack took more of the spotlight
I can still remember watching this live on Cartoon Network. It was played on a program that showcased a variety of cartoons. It was called What A Cartoon! I always liked that the eggs were polka-doted when Muriel cracks them open. There were a few other cartoons that became super popular from this showcase program.
If this existed in reality, I'd call health inspection 😂
1:47 "What did I do?"
This should have won the Oscar in '94.
And the oscar goes to... Courage! My favorite cartoon in cartoon network, today i'm 32 and I still watch it on HBO. Greetings from Argentina.
The work John Dilworth has made influenced my art from the beginning. Also really cool to see the original credits!

3:40 The eggs and bacon always made me hungry. Haha!
1:36 Eustice looks like he's ready to throw down!
I love how eventually, Courage and the chicken stop fighting and just start playing games.
4:14 Spotted the Dirdy Birdy!
Love how the UFO just slid in with squeaky wheel sound fx lol
That was the Windmill making that sound, not the UFO.
If you pause on 4:14 there's statues on the green shelves. You see a ufo, raisin from "smart talk with raisin", dirty birdy and furgerina from "dirty birdy", and Nedd from "Noodles and Nedd". The blue character next to Raisin is "Sparkles" from a unrealized project John tried to get funded. John dilworth likes to refer Nedd as "Dilly" because Nedd is a caricature of John r dilworth himself. Nedd appears in a portait on the wall of the staircase in every courage episode. Theres a picture of Nedd with a flower coming out of his Butt as a reference to the "Dirty birdy" short film at 5:39 cartoon network did not censor it 😅
Thanks for uploading your original Courage episode John. This really was my favorite show growing up. They sure don't make em like this anymore.
I remember watching this with my dad as a child, and both of us thinking it was both the most insane and brilliant thing either of us had watched in a long time.
Classic. I have an original copy of Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island from when I was a kid and at the end of the movie, after the credits, this cartoon is there. The music in the opening and closing credits was better on the VHS tape version though.
You mean Witch's Ghost?
I remember watching this years ago when I was a kid. It gave me nightmares but I loved it. This is stunning quality, probably the best quality on the internet.
I remember the day that i saw this. I was like 5 or 6. Strangely my favorite scene was the cutting of the egg at breakfast, because the yolk was still inside when cut. I wished my eggs were like that. This episode was a good start for the legacy
To tell you the truth, I don't think that would be a good idea because of the idea Eustace turned into a chicken? Just don't do it if this is ever real
I love Courage and I love you Dilly
Also taken from The What A Cartoon Show.
Does anyone else remember this being on the Scooby Doo Witches Ghost VHS before the movie?
True, I do! 👍
For me it was after the credits rolled.

Maaaan, I remember when I saw this on TV when it first aired. It was easily the scariest cartoon I'd seen up to that point. Eustace eating that egg and going "OoowhhOOAAAAooo" were the things I'd remembered the most.
I can now see how this was developed to become the masterpiece of a cartoon show it would end up being years later.
