Okay. Fair warning. If you are planning to get a pug, be aware of how much they shed. I have a pug, and she sheds like crazy. If you don't brush them daily, they tend to shed more. Also, don't put any pressure on their necks, as it pops their eyes out slightly. Not out of their sculls, but to the point where they need to go to the vet immediately. But they are the cutest things ever! If you are considering one, please consider a rescue. They need a home too!

They have such a personality of their own, so loving. My little Jasper is almost 13. He has hip issues but he will keep going and going just wanting to get anyone's attention, he definetly a people guy :)

They have narrow nostrils and excess soft tissue in their airways, for many pugs this blocks proper airflow. Almost all pugs start having trouble breathing between 1 to 4 years of age. Sometimes the windpipe will collapse entirely.
Constantly having trouble getting enough air is of course very distressing for the dog. They're unable to exercise much, can have a lot of difficulty sleeping and are at heightened risk of fatal heat stroke.
Also because of their bulging eyes sometimes their eyelids can't completely close which can lead to chronic pain, ulcers and blindness.

as a pug owner, I say most of this video is correct, except for them being a low maintenance dog. They need to have their face folds washed every day, they have a tendency to have dry skin and need to use moisturizing doggy shampoo, and coconut oil or nose balm for their noses, and they tend to get bad hip problems later in life. I love my pug, but I would not recommend them to someone who doesn't know or refuses to acknowledge these facts about them.
I was thinking just about the same! I was actually frightened that a lot of people might attempt to seek pugs because of their video's advertisement on how low maintenance pugs are. They aren't so much as low maintaince as stated in the video and do require an extensive amount of breed knowledge, dog care, and everyday affection!
I've had Pugs over 30 years and daily cleaning is something I never had to deal with. This information come from experience with over 8 Pugs.

Please ADOPT don't shop, pugs are absolutely adorable and awesome but check out your local shelters for a doggy friend before buying from a pet store or a breeder; many pugs and other breeds don't get a chance to be adopted by an owner because many people want the purebred breed from the pet store (these puppies usually come from cruel puppy mills where dogs are kept in cages most of the time!)

I had a pug her name was bebo ...well they are the best companions...but they are prone to health problems..it was so sad and heartbreaking to see her getting paralyzed and then she had a tumour now she rests in peace.. she will always be in my heart..she was so playful loving and possesive..no one can take her place ..again
i also lost my 3 year old pug 8 days ago. he was anemic and diabetic. he also accumulated water in his liver and had periodontal disease. i failed my dog. i regret it so much

I got a pug a week ago! she's soo cute 😍 also, if you were planning on insulting these beauties;
1) they have breathing problems because their faces are pushed in and theirs noses are always congested
2) if you wouldn't freaking feed them so much and actually get your lazy self off your fricking phone and play with them they wouldn't be so "unhealthy"

Pugs make me really sad. The health issues that have been created because we value their 'cute' appearance more than their function as living beings are terrible.
The individual dogs are of course capable of being sweet and wonderful and lovely, but SO many of them have chronic pain and debilitating hereditary conditions, and that's just heartbreaking.
Maybe they can breed the trait out of pugs by mixing with normal dogs so they won't have breathing issues anymore.

Yeah, it's entirely possible to reverse the process - we bred pugs to the state they're in now, they could be bred out of it again. But people won't because yeah, then it wouldn't be what we think of as a pug.
this is not always the story. most of the pugs who have heath conditions are probobly from a puppy mill, so they are mass produced. if they are bred correctly then they should have no problems

Every breed is prone to their own health problems. I’ve had 7 in my lifetime that are all perfectly happy and healthy.

@@firecat2465 You do realize that 60% of those issues come from overweight pugs? Properly feed and excersiced pugs tend to live very good healthy lives.
They are not low maintenance as mentioned in the article. They need to get their facts right. I own a pug and they do require a lot of maintenance. Eg. Deshedding their coats. Grooming often. Cleaning their wrinkles. Washing their bottoms. They are the most ad dogs. Love the breed so much.

When my mum was little, she got bullied because of her pug. They thought it was a very weird dog. At that time, that breed wasn't well known at the place she lived. But she didn't mind it and gave her dog endless love! Proud of my mum

Please be careful how you use the word “torture” though! I agree that it’s horrible how these dogs suffer throughout life just because people want cute dogs, but torture implies that people are actively wanting to cause pain. I think it’s a lot more about ignorance! Lots of people don’t want to face the fact that brachycephalic dogs live with respiratory distress, and I think it does more harm than good to imply that pug owners are torturing their dogs. If you upset people like that, they will probably close their minds even more to listening to you about this issue, sadly.

Pugs are awesome. I love them, but they are not really low maintenance. 1) They shed profusely all year long. You have to vacuum/sweep your house often. You'll find their fur in every nook and cranny of your house and car 2) The wrinkles on their faces have to be cleaned daily, or there will be yeast/bacterial infection 3) They are not lazy, although they are fit to live in apartments. They love running and playing. If they don't get enough exercise, they will pack on the pounds very easily. Plus, they will be bored. 4) They love being with their owners. If you can't dedicate time, pugs are not for you. They don't understand personal space. They will follow you everywhere.

I've heard that many times. It seems to be a popular thing for holy-than-though types to harp on, but other breeds have their problems as well. All I can say is my pug was probably the happiest living creature I've ever encountered.

Actually, they're a high maintenance breed because the vet bills soar through the roof. The fold in their face can grow mold and bacteria to get them sick, as well as their noses can get clogged with stuff really easy. They have trouble breathing the way their face is designed, and often have lung problems. Back and leg problems are common too.

Okay, while I agree with most of these, pugs are NOT low maintenance!!! Due to inbreeding they're prone to a lot of health problems and you _need_ to stay on top of that if you want your pug to live a long, happy life. Regular check ups and keep them on a somewhat strict diet as they can gain weight quickly and that's extremely hard on them. They also overheat very easily due to their flat face and lungs so they cannot be left outside or unattended for long periods of time. Please, please, please do your research before getting one.

I absolutely LOVE pugs! We have so many in the neighbourhood so I have placed my office very close to the panorama window that sees the street so I end up seeing them all as I work at my office and they are out on their strolls. I have to scream every time I see one. We’re doing this since 2 years now, it never gets old 😂😂😂 Uff I absolutely want one but their documented health problems make me just love them from afar. Currently our landlord does not permit dogs but when I move from here I will browse the Animal Shelter and get a doggy from there I suppose. They all just want love 💕✨

Bulldogs are great, too. Tied with pugs, in my book, for my faves. I've owned both, and both require a bit extra attention to keeping them comfortable in heat & cold, but they are absolutely wonderful, affectionate, loving, comical, kind and intelligent.
I love pugs, I've had 19 pugs in the last 33 years. I usually had 7 at a time. I presently have 2 pugs and 2 chugs.

I have a Pug she is Pippa, Pippa is a true warrior well size mattered in this case Pippa was a puppy and sprinted really quickly to get out and got run over but (here is where size matters in the small way) it was a van and she was so small she ran UNDER it so she broke her pelvis but was still walking around fine and she is great now and has a gate so she cant leave the living room until we open the gate.
All dogs are amazing in their own way :)

They're great in the winter they act like personal heaters cause they snuggle up to you when it's cold
I have had loads of different breed of dog over the years and I have to say Pugs have so much character they are very good with kids and sooo funny that being said shedding is crazy and you will have to give a pug a little extra care cleaning their folds daily or every other day but beautiful dogs don't believe what they all say about breathing problems my boy has been fine.
