I grew up in loyall graduated 1966 the first building you said, I think that was the RC building. I’m going back there in a couple months and I’ll make sure if you keep on the road going north, he run into Baxter that is where I grew up too
When I lived in Loyall, my father worked as a mechanic at a little shop around the corner where the convenience store is. It was diagonally across from the Theatre toward Baxter, I remember my Mom and I taking lunch she had prepared. It was about a two-block walk and was the highlight of my day for a 3 - 4-year-old walking on the "main road" with all the traffic! (probably 3 - 4 cars)
I was born in Harlan, but lived in baxter, then moved to. Loyall a Lotta good memories growing up there went into the Air Force got out in 1973 work for Clyde Bennett a little while moved to Lexington. Now in Beattyville Kentucky, with 300 acres in a coal tipple right down the road. The old saying is you’re never leave Harlan alive but I did.
I remember walking to the post office my grandad late 60s Delbert Harris my mom was mayme they lived on the opposite side of tracks from the post office by the coal shoot love this show
If you had kept going straight on Mapother you would have passed my aunt and uncles house. Thanks for the tour. My grandpa lived in part of town that got erased by the flood wall project.
The first building you mentioned being the old city hall and mistakenly thought was the old RC plant had the date 1923 (not 1928) on the front of it. From 1927 to 1935 my great grandfather was the chief of police there. He lived in the upstairs apartment and there are jail cells in the building. I have a letter my great grandfather wrote on Loyall Letterhead in 1927 and it had the name Loyall and Shonn on it. I’m not sure, but think the town may have been Shonn before becoming Loyall. I have a cousin in her 90ies that still remembers him coming down from his apartment and walking her home from just down the street where she took piano lessons.
When you said "you were almost sure that was the old RC plant, you were correct". My best friend's parents used to live in that neighborhood behind it. Great video! A real trip down memory lane for me. . . Thanks!
Can you do a video on Evarts, KY? My wife’s mom was born & raised there. I’ve wanted to take her back to see the town but we are not able to go anymore. They were “Shadrak’s” (spelling?) Enjoyed your tour of Loyall, thanks for preserving a slice of our rich KY History!
I was born in Harlan but my family moved to Loyall. I remember the house we lived in was across the street from the old post office. There were houses on both sides of the street that were torn down to build the new post Office and Funeral Home. My sisters went to the School, but I did not as my Family moved to Chattanooga Tennessee in 1947. I remember a boy drowned in the river and a lady fell on ice and "broke her head", I assume that meant she died of her injuries.
Love this video so much! Thank you for posting! My dad was from Loyall. His dad worked for the L&N for many years and retired from there. My dad's brother, Claude, owned the general store in town, across from the Corner Store and the Margie Grand. They were good friends with Marshall Cody Long. Uncle Claude lived in the Rio Vista area of Loyall and his house was flooded terribly in the 77 flood. I remember after the flood, there was something like four feet of mud in the house, and so many belongings and photographs were ruined. It was heartbreaking. Loyall is near and dear to my heart. My mom and dad, as well as mamaw, papwaw and Uncle Claude and Aunt Mabel are all buried in the Resthaven Cemetery. The older I get, the more I long for the place my dad called home, and for the beautiful mountains surrounding the gentle people of Harlan County.
From the end of March 1997 to mid-January 1998, my mom Jackie, my sisters Crystal and Jamie, and I moved to Loyall. We stayed at Joe Middleton's house. Joe was Mom's boyfriend at the time.
My ex husband's uncle use to pastor the brick church you past pastor lambert my cousin still lives there. My grandparents and other family members are buried rest haven
Cool i have been there , back in the 1970s. my uncle is from there , his brother was the Cop and his other brother owned the gas station , they would set up and play blue grass music out side the gas station, tons of people would come and hang out wile they played , great memories ! There name was Griffey my uncle was Morgan Griffey , i am from Ohio Thank for the Ride !
When I was in Lexington, I went to the Burgers and Shakes restaurant on New Circle Road. The owner of that restaurant owned the cinema in Loyall. They even had the old cash register from the cinema (this was about 4-5 years ago).
I’m looking for a bridge that had a reactment of a big car wreck. I was told it was in Loyall or Baxter. I remember going to Chevrolet but don’t remember going after 1975 when my grandfather Tip passed away. We still went to Grays Knob and still do my mom and dad and a lot of family are buried in Resthaven Cemetart
Any body remember Mr. Mills the strictest teacher ever had him for the 4th and 5th grade. I hated that man but as I have gotten older I appreciate him more.
Spent a lot of time as grew up in cincy mom was mayme Harris so many Harris relatives can't count them grandpa was Delbert grama big mama lived on side of hill next to train yard and old concrete coal shooi
The old school is the Loyall Flea Market too. Fun fact inside of the roof lives thousands of bats. The other building after the fire house was the Pepsi plant. The trains used to go day and night.
Ignited Coyote I was 7 Years Old remember October 1962 Lawnvale was on the Road Between Loyall and Baxter! Believe there was 5 Houses on The Side Road that was Wiped out by Floodwaters March 1963 one of Them was the House we Lived in before Moving to Lexington October 1962!
Another one I was sure I'd already commented about. Getting old and forgetful. The engineering of that river reroute is still impressive to think about.
I remember that 77 flood. I went down to Harlan to visit my family. I was 11 yrs old. My parents are buried in nearby Resthaven
I was 12 in 77, and My Mom's buried in Resthaven, We've got a lot in common.
Was there another flood in the early 1980's?? I helped recover my Aunt Oakley's house after.

The theater was owned by O.G. Roaden. He lived in the apartment upstairs. It was named the Roaden, but I don’t recall anyone using the name.
Thanks!

My Grandfather worked for L&N and lived in Loyall!
coyote can you take visit to the old high school in Loyall i went to school there in the 50s
My uncle lives in loyal
When I was in Lexington, I went to the Burgers and Shakes restaurant on New Circle Road. The owner of that restaurant owned the cinema in Loyall. They even had the old cash register from the cinema (this was about 4-5 years ago).
The old rc bottling plant was owned by beckem Carmichael ,the theatre was named rhoaden I think
Also the river is a perfect spot to kayak.
Rc cola and moon pie
My mother Helen “Sparky” Brent went to Loyall HS. Would have been in the late 40s.
the cinema in downtown harlan used to be called the margie grand.
The cinema in Evarts was called the Rosalyn. It burned in the late 60s, or early 70s.
I’m looking for a bridge that had a reactment of a big car wreck. I was told it was in Loyall or Baxter. That was the RC plant owned by James Carmical that was in the building you were unsure of.
I'm not 100%sure, but I believe the name of Loyall's theater was Roaden.
Sure remember getting arc cola and a moon pie when working cuttin or striping tobacco
Any body remember Mr. Mills the strictest teacher ever had him for the 4th and 5th grade. I hated that man but as I have gotten older I appreciate him more.
Mr. Johnny Mills

At 10:43 my friend lived there on the right her name was Billie Moore. How the hell did I remember that ?
the building up from the loyall fire department is the one that used to be the bottling plant.
Does Lawnvale Subdivision still Exist?
Yeah, I think so.
