  • Measuring UVI in the Reptile Room with SolarMeter 6.5R // In today's video I take a quick tour through my reptile room to measure the Ultraviolet Indices (measure the UVI) of all the reptile enclosures using a new SolarMeter 6.5R. This video is NOT a guide for the proper use of UVB bulbs. I also dug out my old/used UVB bulbs and measured the UVI on them to see if I can recycle them!

    Now you can understand my frustration, they need to put the sensor on the front so you can hold it flat and actually measure where the animal basks from. If the boa basking after you bumped the uvi up isnt convincing enough for people I dont know what is.

      @@ElijahSnyder Ive just tested this, held the solarmeter flat under both the jungle dawn led and the pro t5 exactly the same as what dylan is using, held the button, the screen is visible clear as day, and thats without a visor or anything or an angled screen. Obviously if you were leaning over the sensor and blocking it youd get an altered reading. If the sensor was on the front, surely its exposed to the exact amount of scatter if held upright anyway like the current model. In either senario the sensor is flat when measured, if you were able to hold it flat there would be no need to ever angle it id imagine.

    A couple of friends and I got together and bought a solar meter. We share it as needed, its not something you need to use all the time, but when you need to check new set ups, or rotate bulbs, or animal seems off, it is very useful, and by doing it this way it wasn't too expensive. There haven't been any custody fights over the solar meter...yet.... ;)

      I resisted buying one for a long time haha! It was quite an expense. My only tip, even if you don't plan on buying one soon don't throw out your old bulbs! I'm sure eventually you will pick a solar meter up, and by that point, you'll probably have a good stockpile of old bulbs that still work :)

    I bought one of these a few years ago. And I consider it a great investment. I bought it when I got a tortoise because UV is extremely important for tortoises. But it comes in handy for all kinds of reptiles now. A temperature gun is also very handy. Two great investments.

    Great walk through Dillon on each enclosure and how to test each bulb. I purchased one last week and went round and tested all my bulbs and was good to see that they are pretty much on point. My Day Gecko is getting high 3's from the shadedweller but I do have his horizontal branch pretty close to the mesh But my crestie was getting just over 2 at the basking so I took the reflector out which has reduced it to 0.8/0.9 so a bit more suitable and when the bulb starts to loose its strength I can add the reflector back in to the unit to boost the index back up.

      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Dave! Yeah, it's nice that the meter allows you to be flexible with your bulbs (reflector vs no reflector, bulb placement, etc.). I think in the long run, the meter pays for itself!

    One observation: one needs to leave a uvb lamp on for two or three minutes before measuring: in my experience, the output increases after initial switch on. Tubes often show mild blackening at the ends, which means they are becoming worn. If they are left in too long, they can fail suddenly, and flicker, which will undoubtedly stress the animals.

      I tested some bulbs over the weekend while cleaning out my garage… I don’t remember which brand, either zilla or zoomed, but the mercury halides increased output for almost an hour after being turned on, and significant increase at that, it was like 2.5 uvi increase after 1 full hour. This was on a older used bulb I replaced before I got the meter…

    I bought a solarmeter and testet the baskink spots. I build the enclosure for a green tree monitor who should have 3-4uvb. on bothe basking spots I have exactly in the middle its a realy small point a uvb up to 8. I cant higher the lamps because they are inside the enclusure. do you think that this is a problem? I only have spot hid lamps. its a realy big enclosure.

      A UVI of 8.0 is quite high. I would recommend trying to find a bulb with a lower output. For example, if you’re using a 12% UV bulb, you should look for a 6% bulb instead

    I'm just starting to learn about solar meters but isn't the 6.2 the one that test how much of the UV being produced by the bulb is UVB?

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  3 роки тому

      Yep the 6.2 measures the intensity of UV coming off the bulb (i.e. how much UV is being produced). Here's a great article: startortoises.net/uvb-readings.html#:~:text=Solarmeter%206.2%20reads%20the%20whole,that%20helps%20create%20vitamin%20D3.&text=Unlike%20Solarmeter%206.2%2C%20the%206.5,UV%20bulbs%20and%20the%20sun.
