Zero tillage and minimum tillage are both types of conservation tillage methods aimed at reducing soil disturbance, but they differ in the extent to which soil is worked:
Zero Tillage (No-till):
In zero tillage, the soil is not disturbed at all before planting. No plowing, harrowing, or other mechanical tillage practices are used.
Seeds are directly drilled into the undisturbed soil using specialized equipment, which reduces soil erosion and improves moisture retention.
This method preserves soil structure, enhances organic matter, and supports better water infiltration.
Minimum Tillage:
Minimum tillage involves some level of soil disturbance, but it is less intensive than conventional tillage.
The soil is tilled lightly, often just enough to prepare the seedbed, like using a disk or shallow plowing, but not to the extent of full inversion of the soil layers.
This method still aims to conserve soil moisture and organic matter but allows for easier management of soil compaction and weed control.
In summary, zero tillage involves no soil disturbance, while minimum tillage includes limited, shallow tillage to prepare the land for planting.
