Despite its name, the Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is not a goat at all, nor is it closely related to them, the closest living relatives of the mountain goat are the chamoises (genus Rupicapra), both the chamoises and mountain goat are members of the subtribe Rupicaprina, which belongs to the tribe Naemorhedini, which now belongs to the subfamily Ovibovinae, Ovibovinae is a subfamily of bovids that is mostly native to Eurasia and lives mostly in cold-climate habitats, there are three major tribes included within the subfamily Ovibovinae, the tribes are Hemitragini (Tahrs (contains 3 genera: Arabitragus, Nilgiritragus, and Hemitragus)), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat (contains 4 genera: Oreamnos, Rupicapra, Capricornis, and Naemorhedus)), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin (contains 2 genera: Budorcas and Ovibos)), it is also hinted that the subfamily Ovibovinae (Muskox, Takin, Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat) is fairly similar and most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Hirola, and Tsessebes).
