  • Shelby is a 13 year old Border Collie who has arthritis, especially in his back legs, and also suspected Degenerative Myelopathy. As a result he can’t get up the stairs anymore. So when Shelby was 12 years old his dad, who’s a mechanical and electrical engineer, made a dog stairlift for him by modifying a secondhand "Acorn Superglide 120" stairlift bought on eBay to hold a custom-made dog box (also made by Shelby's dad) instead of the chair. Shelby’s original dog stair lift video shows it with a hand-held control switch on a long cable. This was only ever meant to be a temporary measure until Shelby’s dad had time to make a box for the switch and mount it on the side of the carriage. This finally happened about a year later and Shelby wanted to make another video to show off his independence. He hasn’t quite figured out how to operate it by himself yet but he can happily travel up and down the stairs without anyone walking beside him now. Shelby loves his stairlift as it allows him to be upstairs where his family spends most of their time. It also allows him to get downstairs safely without putting him at risk of tripping, collapsing or causing unnecessary discomfort from attempting to run down the stairs on his own. hello, how did you make the box and adapt it to a person chair lift? thank you

A sturdy metal frame was constructed to support the box and bolt onto the motor unit in place of the chair. There's a photo of the underside of the box in the blog post (link in video description) about the stairlift. :)

@@freedomstairlifts4258 Hi, I've added a bit more information about building the box and a few more photos of the dog box to the blog written about this at shelbysdogblog.wordpress.com/2019/10/09/stairlift-goes-up-stairlift-goes-down/ Hopefully there's enough info there to help you work something out. Cheers, "Shelby's Mum". :)

Can you PLEASE tell me how you bypassed the power without the chair? I have what looks to be the same chairlift, & I desperately need to make it work as you’ve done for our senior Chow Chow…BEFORE my husbands surgery in July,
    PLEASE CONTACT ME

We removed the chair and reconnected all the switches from the chair to similar switches on the dog box. My husband is an electrical/mechanical engineer so was able to do this work himself without the need for any wiring diagrams or plans. If you haven't seen it already please read our blog about Shelby's stairlift at shelbysdogblog.wordpress.com/2019/10/09/stairlift-goes-up-stairlift-goes-down/ Also click on the photos in the blog as the captions have further information which may be helpful. Cheers, "Shelby's Mum" :)

I'm rubbish at doing anything technical like this. Would you say that I would need to employ a welder and an electrician to do this once I'd bought a second stairlift, and if so, in what order would I need to employ them? Also was it an option to make the track system shorter for transport home ie take it apart? I see you said you attached to a roof rack, which I don't have.

Should be fairly easy really, the one I've just bought came apart into 2

No, we were not able to find any commercially available which is why we built our own. This home-made stairlift is a one-off creation and not available to buy. Please read our blog at shelbysdogblog.wordpress.com/2019/10/09/stairlift-goes-up-stairlift-goes-down/ 🐕🙂
