It's funny, I guess technically they're right when they say Hitman is very "trial and error", and yet I never thought of it like that. I feel like it's more of a multi-solution puzzle, less than what I typically associate with "trial and error" which is to say dying frequently and restarting until you find the one right solution. On the subject of Absolution, I remember really liking it when it came out and thinking it was a "good game/bad Hitman" thing, but now I struggle to go back to it because of all its bizarre conflicting design decisions.
Even then at least in Hitman Blood Money, the game that I played a lot in the past. There are still plenty of killing methods for us to take if we screwed up one method we planned before. So for me the "trial and error" doesn't make sense and the new devs at that time probably just wanna make your typical 3rd shooter game.
The reason i personally enjoy restarting levels, is the ability to observe how different interactions play out, and how certain elements interact with each other. I might be wrong on some levels, but the majority has so many different interactions that it's most likely impossible to exhaust them all in a single playtrough.
It feels really Dark Souls-y (I’m so sorry for that comparison) But when you die you don’t feel like giving up, and even if you associate the deaths with failure they’re just a way to understand everything better
I remember feeling this was the death of the franchise after playing it and seeing the fallout for io. The new trilogy was one of the best comebacks I've seen from any series
Yeah, and now I' hoping that another dev company makes a comeback, Overkill from the Payday series. I hope they make it. It's like every game series I like is made by companies that gets in these messy situations.
There are many parts of Absolution that seem designed around the crutch of the player having Instinct with no real viable second option, which is odd considering that higher difficulties severely limit the feature. A very misguided entry all around

You know the genetically engineered automaton that was raised to be a cold blooded killer from birth? Let's give him a Dad arc after having him kill one of the most likable character in the series who was the closest thing he had to family to begin with. Also, sexy killer nuns. *Someone was paid to write this!*
I think that any one of the elements could work well if well implemented, having 47 kill Diana could be a very powerful moment, but it would require for it to be built up over the course of the game (so not in the beginning) and be the result of something huge. Having 47 go on the quest to save a little girl from becoming like him could be a very good plot with ways to actually get hindsight on the character's psyche. And SM nuns can be good because it's SM nuns and that sounds pretty much like one of the whacky ideas I can definitely see in Hitman with the mix of religious symbolism, decadence and violence. The real problem is having all 3 at the same time whilst not giving much set up or pay off to any of those and they end up feeling cheap and robbed. You could have a game where 47 slowly starts to turn against the Agency for some reason and at some point even ends up killing Diana or you could have 47 do his normal missions but in one he encounters a little girl that is supposed to become like him and then he takes a personal decision to rescue her and then in between missions you have him try to help this girl to find a new life and be safe. Both plots could really work and be completely fine, they just royally screwed up in the execution department
@@jac_238 Yeah, I distinctly remember that and I haven't even played any Hitman game. Surprised that people are making that basic of a mistake in recollecting this. On the other hand, you could say that the game is really memorable, as I have little interest in the series and can remember basically the entire game blow by blow having watched one playthrough when it first came out.
With the Saints, leading up to the games release, I always assumed they were gonna be the targets of the entire game. Like, they're supposed to be assassins like 47 so the game would center around them hunting 47 down. Maybe have the usual dynamic of the game flipped, where you're usually the assassin going after a target, you're now protecting the target and rooting out the assassin, who have their own wacky and ridiculous route of assassinating the target giving them personality. They were the focal point of the marketing, the who point of the plot is that 47 is going against the ICA and in a series rife with religious subtext killer nuns is an idea that sounds like something interesting could be done with. Then I actually play the game and find out it's now focusing on this rando criminal we just kinda bumped into.
Ikr? I remember they were so highly publicized that u just assume that they’re gonna be main characters, like they were some OP anime villain group where each one is their own boss battle, it was very disappointing and head-scratching their actual role in the game.
I could even re-write the entire story with the exact same character with the Saints alone. Victoria is a relative of Diana, who is being kidnapped by Travis to become the second 47 under his control. Diana try to fight back and as a result, 47 are being tasked for her execution. However, 47 saved her. Choosing to trust a long time friend rather than some bastard from gods-know-where. As Diana and 47 is on the run, Travis use his position to issue a priority 1A Kill-order on both of them. Effectively turning the entire agency against them. One of the Assassin coming after them are The Saint, a mop-up commando team made up of former female child soldier (to show off the dark side of ICA dealing with human trafficking business) with Blake Dexter and his company being their arms supplier. This would make the game more "blood-money" as you would have the usual Diana briefing, going from place to place as you're on the run as well as THE ACTUAL PLOT! Gameplay would be a more cat-and-mouse as now you're not the hunter like usual. First few mission would be about gathering information, kill ICA agent operate in the area or kidnap them for interrogation. Later on, The Saint show up and they have the ability to detect your disguise so you might have to use your cover more to hide from them. Each member have their own personality and have a different relationship with each other, you can use it to assasinate them. Their might be boss battle, like in Codename 47, maybe some of them got a minigun or they got the entire reinforcement to back them up and you can't hide anymore.
@@johncarter4956 That's a lot of great ideas! 47 protecting Victoria and Diana slightly showing his emotions while being hunted throughout the stages sounds like a very good change of pace
My defense of Hitman Absolution is that 47 is on the run and of course the gameplay, environment, access to his weapons/gadgets and the like are limited/changed. He's not accepting contracts, he's looking for vengeance
@CARPAINTM3 ha haha yeah okay better then blood money? You mean with episodes every month lmao or the terrible levels or the zero story or better yet the complete lack of actual game it took forever to actually have the full game. Bloody money is better then any hitman game period. If parts of a game is what we consider a "era" shit era
One pal I know who played this game but also studied color palette or some shit said it's not only about the graphic but the overall tonal of this game is why it looks pretty good despite the years it is behind now.
The graphics looks pretty desaturated for me tbh, and too foggy, too water washed, and too flat. For me I use reshade to improve the graphics later to make it acceptable.
Pretty much. While hitman isn't exactly known for being realistic, it's detrimental to gameplay and just completely insane that random passersbys would alert fucking police/security to the point they shoot at you just cuz you are squatting. With the absurdly limited instinct mechanics and all the mechanics required to navigate the game being extremely punishing, Absolution in general feels like they went completely overboard in punishing the player in a blind paranoia for the game to be "too easy" when difficulty never was the point and even now in the WoA trilogy, the sandbox lets you basically choose any difficulty. @@ganr1277
It was pretty simple and explained at the start of the game and it is the same mechanic that was in hitman 2 silent assasin. If u use disguise from lets say chef the other chefs know each other and it goes on like this with everything. If u use gangster outfit they know each other well so if u get close they recognize it is someone else.
I had a really good time playing this back in 2012 but it was my first ever hitman game and it painted a false picture of what the hitman games were actually like. 8 years late I have now played a few more hitman games and have gotta say that blood money was my favourite
This is a problem Ive had with 47s character in the recent games. They portray him as a necessary evil who kills the shadowy evil groups while in past games he's an amoral killer who will kill anyone he's payed to kill without feeling. The best example of this is the swing king from blood moneys tutorial, he wasnt an evil business man he was just a fuck up whos incompetence resulted in peoples death and one of the victims families hired the ICA to kill him and 47 did it no question. That was part of the point of silent assassin's ending, he tried to go legit and reflect on his past but realized that he can't and is meant to essentially be a grim reaper and accepts that fact. The tone of the previous games was also alot darker, the new games feel more like spy movies (except absolution thats more grindhouse) while the others feel more like dark suspense films.
In fairness, I'd say this is more because of World of Assassination's focus on the Providence storyline. Before they're revealed, 47 does take out some people that, as far as he's aware, have committed much smaller crimes in comparison to several targets from the older games. Like Jordan Cross who, while definitely a bad person, is definitely tame compared to, say, Curtains Down's targets, or the Meat King. The face-to-face conversation you can have with Cross where he begs for his life even feels inspired by Mr. Swing King.
@@0ffguy248The only thing game suffered was not being hitman formula. Well focus story and well acted, game was well polished. physics and graphics were excellent too. But the other games in the series are more enjoyable and memorable.
I think Absolution was great for newcomers. It was my first Hitman game and while I understand why OG fans dislike it, I found it really enjoyable and a great introduction to the series. I think they achieved what they set out to do with it
I lost interest the moment that 47, the legendary Silent Assassin was taken down by a giant Danny Trejo and was belittled by a southern hick. Not to mention; the nuns. What the hell were they thinking with this game?

the game was weird but i look at it as a fun action spin off
I think absolution still had its merits, I went back and played it again recently and was surprised at how smooth the controls and gameplay still felt, tbh absolution wasn’t a good hitman game but it had the potential to be a really good action game.
@@konodioda0962 It is much more immersive than having everything clean, orderly with zero map-transformative events. Nothing changes from the beginning until the end of the mission. It had a much more rugged, gloomy and crumbling setting. I like the new games a lot, but they aren't dark and that is a big drawback. Especially with an ignorant composer like Niels Bye Nielsen, who deliberately ignored Jesper Kyd's work.
I loved the old map system in blood money. I really enjoyed using the map on harder difficulty without any NPC icons, it made me feel like a hit man using blueprints. Much more enjoyable than X-ray vision.
Idk why but I always loved this game. So fucking unhinged and fun to play. I remember playing it on the highest difficulty and trying to perfect run each mission. Was pretty fun to me.
The primary reason why Absolution is the black sheep of the series is because of the lack of Agent Smith. He is the one that holds this series together.
I see a lot of commenters here saying that this was their first hitman game. I guess a long time had passed since Blood Money when this game hit the markets, so that an entire generation of new gamers had not seen this franchise, and assumed that Absolution was the first entry. Kind of like Sands of Time, which came many generations after Mechner first created the original sode scroller. I can only imagine how surprised they would have been on playing the original excellent tetralogy , after having played this dumpster fire of a game.
I actually liked Absolution, but I definitely understand the flaws people dislike about it. It’s personally one of my favorites in the series. It’s silly story wise but not in a bad way, at least in my opinion
I'm a huge Hitman fan and have 100%'d all of them, for context. I played this when it came out and I really enjoyed the production value, the game looked good, OST and voice acting were good, plus I really enjoyed how grimy and dirty every location looked. If you were a fan of the series pre-Absolution, then you most likely hated the story, and yeah it's poorly written and has plot holes, but some absurd moments and dialogue redeemed it to me to a certain extent. The actual game design decisions were awful to the point of being unbelievable. Its even more baffling considering this followed Blood Money. Absolution was going to be even worse but they backpedaled a bit close to the end of development. 7th generation was a mistake and games were never them same after that.
im curious to know what exactly you liked about the OST cause previously jesper kyd was responsible for creating so many memorable tracks and I literally cannot remember anything about the hitman absolution soundtrack except for loud horns, despite having put like 40-50h into the game desperately trying to like it
Having also 100 percented all Hitman games I think Blood Money and Absolution were really bad in terms of story although the remake of the original story in the new games is even worse and I would go so far as to say it is an absolute joke. I think Blood Money is highly overrated and in my opinion Contracts is the by far best the game in terms of design.
13:04 that just sounds like the slider completely destroys the balance of the game and completely makes decision making completely pointless. May as well get rid of platforming in platformers as a “quality of life update.”
Idea what if Victoria played a role similar to Elizabeth and in Bioshock like if she was useful in gameplay, she could be used to distract npcs or retrieve items and more that would have potential been a cooler use of her character while also developing a bond with the player and 47 that would have helped progress the story in a more believable way, damn what a missed opportunity.
I finally understand the plot reasoning: HEAR ME OUT! Whoever wrote this watched the HITMAN 2007 movie and wrote everything accordingly: thinking the Agency is the one who made 47 and named him, therefore giving meaning to the barcode, wanting to stop de the agency from modifying children and making the killing machines, etc. HOWEVER anyone who has actually payed attention to the games realizes 47 doesn't give a flying fuck about the barcode anyways and has no reason to share the motivations he may have in the movie. I liked the movie, though never liked the HUGE discrepancies it has. And this is what happens when you write a game story just by checking an adaptation source; and also you are a very bad writer cause the plot still makes no sense.
At least someone who liked that movie too, i enjoyed the variety of kills they made, truly a Hitman adaptation, not enough thriller and too much action sadly.
Honestly, older Hitman actually are kind of trial and error. I mean, often you open a door and a guard is right behind it and spot you. Sometimes you knock someone out and some fucker across the map see you and freak out. Or you get spot for no damn reason because the AI isnt very consistent. But Lucky Hitman 2016 pretty much fixed every single issue with older Hitman games and thats why i love IoI
That’s kind of what I liked about blood money though, it added a nice bit of a challenge. The newer hitman games are great but feel a little too easy at times
@@cezarstefanseghjucan The first games are the most atmospheric of the bunch. Great soundtrack, locations, feeling. Absolution is linear crap with a generic gameplay pandering to low iq shooter players
Absolution was my first Hitman game and I loved it straight away, I do believe it's the only game I completed and restarted again. It became my favourite game on the PS3. Hitman 2016 was the reason I bought a PS4. When they remastered Absolution and Blood Money for the PS4, I was so excited, of course I loved Absolution and I read about Blood Money being a fan favourite, so was really looking forward to playing both games. Anyway, I played Absolution and still loved it, then I started Blood Money...well I was disappointed, I wanted to love this game too, as I'm such a huge fan of the franchise, but I just couldn't get into it. Of course the graphics weren't as good as Absolution, but to be fair, it's an older game, so that didn't bother me at all. The controls though, I just couldn't get used to them, they felt clunky, and was really difficult to control. I kept saying to myself that it was just because I was used to the great controls of Absolution, Hitman 2016 & Hitman 2 (2018) and that I'd get used to them after a while, but I couldn't, and believe me I tried SO MANY times, I really did, but during the second level, I gave up altogether, and haven't played it since. Perhaps if they remade Blood Money in their new games engine, then I might enjoy it.
@@picklespickle1641 perhaps if I played it when it was first released, I would have enjoyed it more, but the controls were awful. I really did try though.

I really hated that blend in with instinct while wearing a disguise especially since instinct last what feels like 3 seconds, no point on even using disguise your better off doing suit only and sneaking around
I went back and played this game after hitman 2 (2018) and what I found to be so off putting is 47 being so emotionally invested. I was so used to his dry, unimpressed, detached delivery of every voice line that hearing him seem so emotionally invested was very strange. Especially considering that this man is not supposed to have a conscience.
I literally love the first three console Hitman games soooo much that when Absolution came out , i didn't even care to want try it out 😂 thats literally how much i loved Blood Money & Silent Assassin & Contracts plus i knew they would ruin the legendary controls & gameplay because of the era that Absolution came out in but im glad they fixed it & changed it back to the normal controls for when they made Hitman 2016!!!! Hitman never needs to have any gameplay or control changes , only upgrades , u don't fix something thats not broken!!!!!
i like the world of assassination trilogy and it’s opportunity feature, it dumbs it down a bit for casual audiences to get it while also staying true to the original way the hitman games were made.
I really hated the game. With all my heart. I was so hyped for it, but when I played it, it pissed me off. I could never get myself to complete it. It felt nothing like a Hitman game, but a rather a very annoying Splinter cell game without all of the fun. I am so grateful they went back to the roots.
I like absolution. In retrospect it's not as good as the new games, but its not nearly as bad as people make out. It's like Tarantino directed an entry in a film series. Also its way more re-playable now than the first 2 games. and Also it gave us instinct and unlike the new game still gave us the ability to use dual Silverballers.
The irrational fear of pigs of dr. Green is one of the first dialogues you hear when you are dropped in his lab. Still, Greeen's description does pop out before you are able to overhear this dialogue.

A lot of people argued that this game was bad because they tried to base it off the Hitman movies. I've never thought that was true, but it's an interesting argument, since I think it came out around one of the movies release.
I'm still not sure if that argument ever made any sense though, I think your analysis of the development team's changing direction at the beginning of the video is a much more logical explanation.

I can say they tried a different approach with it which isn’t bad and they had a lot of references too. It certainly is a black sheep
@cvit Disliking Hitman Absolution is nothing but an internet trend. You think the rating system is bad here? In Hitman Blood money you can get shot with a 100 bullets and still get "Silent Assassin" as long as you don't shoot back.
Only thing Absolution did best in the entire franchise (imo), was the Agent 47 character model. He looks straight up intimidating and pretty much anything you would imagine 47 to look like. In Hitman 2016 and in later games he looks like a albino office worker.
I disagree. Honestly his face looks too animated it's cartoony. In the new games he looks so robotic it's unsettling and comedic at the same time. As if there's no way he could fit in with these people but he manages to kill them very easily
Honestly absolution could have worked , if it just wasn't a hitman game, like it could have been an original ip or if it must have a franchise attached, it could have been a john wick game. The heavily action oriented gameplay and heavily scripted nature dosen't really fit hitman. The game is fun...but you basically have to forget its a hitman game and just throw out any notion of proper hitman game design. (Also i dont recommend trying silent assassin as its either laughingly easy or so aggravatingly hard you kight aswell go in guns blazing
I'm currently playing through it for the first time as my first hitman game. I'm going to play the other games when they go on sale. I'm liking it so far but I definetly am going to go try them all at some point
Man when growing up this was the only hitman game that got released when I was young and I remember it being so amazing and just replaying that first mission and now growing up and seeing how awful it actually was (as a hitman game) hits different
Another point that made me dislike is the change in the settings. Past games, and the new trilogy, put you into very memorable locations, as the rehab, white house, russian prison, etc while absolution just drags you to a sleazy mechanic shop, wrestling match or whatever and that's it.
I will never forget playing this game, getting 3-4 missions in and thinking "This doesn't get better. The game isn't gonna turn into Hitman. It's gonna keep with this. I'm done." after which I proceeded to turn it off and permanently shelf it.
And you were right, it doesn't. About halfway through the game I realised that the stealth gameplay was crap and just started slaughtering everyone in every mission. I had relatively more fun doing that and breezed the rest of the game in a few hours, thus it just became a standard third-person cover shooter. I've never played it again and probably won't.
@@CarlSlime Yeah I can't remember if I got two, three or four missions in. I remember getting to the one where you have to escape the police and there's no target to kill and absolutely hating it.
Yeah, that's the worst thing about it. It does have the little Chinatown level, which is as big as it seems to get, but at the time I thought "okay, now THIS is when it starts playing like Hitman" then it just goes back to linear shooting.
Honestly, I understand why a die-hard Hitman fan would hate this game. I like the series, but I'm definitely more of a Minecraft/Tactical Shooter kinda guy. This is my favorite Hitman, because while it can be played like a lackluster traditional hitman game, it can ALSO be played as one of the best 3rd Person Shooters ever made.
2:00 Funnily enough, they were kinda on the right track with that one - addition of instinct mode and suspicion markers into the reboot trilogy removed a lot of BS out of the game and made it more playable while not taking away from complexity of the levels.
This was really good, as someone who only got into hitman with this game I was a bit lost at the fan backlash, admittedly from my ignorance. But having watched all your videos I get now the problems and why this game was such a disappointment.
Final Fantasy 13, Zelda Skyward Sword, Resident Evil 5/6... The early 2010s were really a time where beloved game franchises prioritized presentation over non-linear gameplay huh? That and having that goddamn piss filter to make things look yellow or green.
I've been playing hitman games since I was 8 years old. Codename 47 was the first pc game I ever completed over and over again. I struggled with it sure, but I persevered and it gave me some of the greatest gaming moments of my life. If absolution had been the first I played, I probably would never have looked at the series again. So when they say it didn't appeal to a casual audience what they really mean is; it doesn't appeal to people willing to strategize, plan things out and potentially fail multiple times. They were wrong of course. Just like a lot of developers still are today. People want hard games back, not these super casual games where every protagonist has x-ray vision and couldn't die even if you tried. Where every objective is highlighted and marked on your screen, with the best (or only) possible route and little to no chance of deviation.
Eh? Depends. Some "easier" features are just mechanic refinement. At the end of the day, you play a game to enjoy it and frustration is not equal to challenge or difficulty.
Same here. I thought it was alright for what it was. But then I got ahold of the newer Hitman games, and I was like 'wow, this is Hitman? What the fuck was I playing before?'
Despite all of these bad things, which I totally agree with, I love the mechanic of making a human shield and I wish they could also added it to Hitman 3

You know the genetically engineered automaton that was raised to be a cold blooded killer from birth? Let's give him a Dad arc after having him kill one of the most likable character in the series who was the closest thing he had to family to begin with.
Also, sexy killer nuns.
*Someone was paid to write this!*
Oh god I forgot about that trailer with the nuns.
The same sexy nuns that had an S&M sex session with another antagonist earlier
To be fair, it’s revealed at the end of the game that Diana is alive
@@jac_238 Yeah, I distinctly remember that and I haven't even played any Hitman game. Surprised that people are making that basic of a mistake in recollecting this. @@commandershepard7110 You should try original Hitman games - Codename 47, Silent Assasin etc.
that level in the orphanage was one of my favorites of all Hitman locations!
That would have actually been interesting and needed intelligent game and level design, which Absolution does not have.

@@ganr1277

Just played new trilogy and I'm 100% in lockstep with you. Thank you for putting words into what I was feeling
Swing King.

7th generation was a mistake and games were never them same after that.
im curious to know what exactly you liked about the OST cause previously jesper kyd was responsible for creating so many memorable tracks and I literally cannot remember anything about the hitman absolution soundtrack except for loud horns, despite having put like 40-50h into the game desperately trying to like it
Same ! Unpopular opinion but i agree
I actually had a lot of fun in absolution, i think this game was supposed to be a fps game, that's why i played it like an fps, playing loud = fun.

He looks too angry in Absolution. He's meant to be (almost) completely emotionless and detached.
Say what you want but the graphics were great for the time.
I had the same epiphany except I may have gone through less missions

I still enjoy Absolution, it was my first Hitman that I played on the Xbox and I still love it to this day.
So enjoyable! You always make such peculiar, yet reasonable points I'd probably never think of.
You can blow up cars with point shooting?!
That would have made some encounters so much easier
This game walked so that WOA could run.
The first hitman game I played. Wasn't a good introduction to the series, but I liked it when I first played it.
Same here. I thought it was alright for what it was.
But then I got ahold of the newer Hitman games, and I was like 'wow, this is Hitman? What the fuck was I playing before?'
Me ttoo
Contracts was my introduction so I had thought the series was usually dark like that.
2:00 this dude talking complete jibberish lmao
the Saints were criminally underutilized characters
It did feel cool rigging the gas in that guy’s apartment
Despite all of these bad things, which I totally agree with, I love the mechanic of making a human shield and I wish they could also added it to Hitman 3
Like he's a member of the Akatsuki I'm dead
what's the game being shown at 26:25?
El Shaddai Ascension of the Metatron 🥰
Thank God devs/publishers stopped copying Call of Duty. A few of my favorite franchises were ruined because of that. And also thank God IO bounced back hard with Hitman. The recent games are some of the best I’ve played and I’m super excited for Hitman 3.
Great video, btw. It was entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
What do you think of Hitman III, since it has been released this year?
@@CZuskia
I actually haven’t played it yet. I had a lot on my plate when it came out and now I just got an infinite backlog. I will get to it eventually, but I’m afraid this comment might be a few years old by the time I do, so don’t expect an immediate response lol.
@@Ckoz2829 lol, no problem. I’ve got a similar problem, too!
Regardless of what Hitman III holds for us in the future, I’ll wait for a reply. (Still can’t find where to click to insert a smiley face correctly)

The game innovations goes against the strongest points of the Hitman franchise. The non-linearity, creative solutions and tense moments are all lost and forgotten. In name of a modernization that is nothing more, nothing less that pitiful trend chasing. You are better off playing the HD Remaster of the old versions that this nonsense.
The only good point of Hitman Absolution is it served as example to course correction into Hitman 2016.
Great video, Cvit man. Keep up, brother! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
damn cvit is uploading regularly now? hell yea
I thought the cornfield and hiding as a scarecrow was pretty awesome.
Is the Smurf pajamas a personal story or just something you thought on the fly?
I felt it with my soul when you mentioned the checkpoint system.
My biggest problem started in the orphanage, where the lower parts had triggers for npc movement.
Unlike all the other games, where the tracks start at the beginning.
Also im glad im not the only one that had a negative opinion on this game.
Its such a departure from anything Hitman, and my review was just about as scattered since i was just plain upset where the series went.
I play it on purist and its an "ABSOLUTE" ass
This video completed my day seriously. Good dinner with a video game doc
Going from Absolution to the World of Assassination trilogy is one of the greatest franchise comebacks in a long time
