I know this has been made for quite a while now, but I would still like to say a huge thank you to all who made this superb film. It should be essential viewing in all schools in Guernsey. Brilliantly made and such an important historical record. Thank you again.
If it weren't for the excellent series, " Island at War " I wouldn't have known about this occupation. Never mentioned in any class I took. Appreciate this video very much.
I’m a Guernsey man and I’m proud . My mums mum and dad stayed and my dad’s mum was evacuated . So I used to hear both stories . I wish I had written them down . Sadler both sets of grandparents have passed
Happy Liberation Day 2021! We just rewatched this as a way to mark and honour Liberation Day. What an amazing film. Thank you again for all those involved in making it.
Good evening - l designed the 2021 Liberation Day website, live near the Villette Hotel. lt was a privilege to support the island. l am from Yorkshire although l appreciate what it means, my father served and was part of Operation Market Garden to free the Dutch. l also created the Government House website and the memorial for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh RlP www.liberationday.gg/
My grandfather went just after the war for post office work restoring tele-communications. He fought the Germans at the Somme, suffered the blitz and then did that. Wish I had more info about the channel islands work he did.
I felt as if I was part of these extradoniary people lives they were so resourceful and so keen with class as an American I feel so blessed that my grandparents and great grandparents didn't experience but grandfather as black man was in japan I still have these rock and it will stay in my family forever and ever as well these people who went through this in these islands my goal will be to make sure everyone one around me know who you are and your name. thank you all for your sacrafice for allowing my generation to live Happy.shoutout from San Rafael California//l!!
If it wasn't for UA-cam I would've never known Jersey and Guernsey were occupied during WWII. If I died yesterday I would've died not knowing that. No one ever mentioning this fact is not appreciating what these people went through...
The lady mentioning the German soldier doing her homework for her made me laugh, the continuation of cultural life through variety theatre acts is an interesting point. The final winter of 1944-45 parallels that of the Netherlands Hunger Winter of the same period, the experiences recounted here were the same as those of the Dutch that I've read about.
What happened with the slaved prisoners used by the Germans during the last stage of occupation ? When the native population was suffering starvation what would happen to those prisioners?
In 1974 I went first Time to Germany, I'm breton from St Brieuc " just around the corner", and When I Saw ( in Freiburg opposite Colmar , Alsace), what really Germany was,....I really thought I was in America ...!!! It was , yes, enhanced with all the US Big cars of US soldiers stationned there at this Time... But when seeing the Autobahn running closest to thé Rhine, thé Underground parkhaeuser for cars in Freiburg, thé city itself, a jewel,...you could really think you were in America or so. Later I became English and German.teacher in France and I tried to share what I had discovered and especially also my love for your Islands ,.so close to my native region. Now, as you Can see with my pseudo, I'm " totally" absorbed by ...trading ..! And just a little advice, when seeing a graph,...just divide the high/ low and then again The high with the New value you're just calculated. And then look at the point where the curve made a reverse ...!!
The German occupation of the Channel Islands was a model occupation compared to any occupation by the British or Americans. All they did was relatively gently enforce sensible war-time rules (like having a light on your bike at night), whilst showing respect, restraint, integration and proper efforts at learning the language and culture. Wartime Channel Islands enjoyed a stronger sense of community and engaged in more nourishing activities than at nearly any other point in documented history anywhere on Britain. The recent American occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have not featured such characteristics. Nor did the various British occupations a century earlier. Sure, other nations and races were treated like animals by the Nazis, but the British would have got off very lightly should things have swung the other way. That’s because Hitler liked the British Anglo-Saxon roots.
Civilian minorities and partisan agitators had deportation to death camps and summary execution by the German occupiers to worry about. Neither of which sound great.
Stukas defeated the Channel Islands and....spitfires defeated stukas... If I'm right Top Gear's leader for years ( I can't remember his name, ...so sorry !) ,...yes, Jérémy Clarkson (!),...Said that spitfires won WW 2. He also Said the revolver allowed Brits to colonise the World !.

Arnold Ridley, author of "Third Time Lucky" (23:04) was the famous Private Godfrey in the Dad's Army series.

Perhaps you haven't seen the numerous TV documentaries, or the several dramas set on the Channel Islands during the occupation?
@@dovetonsturdee7033 I haven't, I mean I had not. Not until I saw this one and perhaps one more while I was researching the subject that day.
I knew. But I do live on Guernsey..😂

John Nettles' talk in Germany about the German occupation of the British Channel Islands during WWII
And now, in Britain, you get a visit from the police for posting a "mean message" on Facebook.
What happened with the slaved prisoners used by the Germans during the last stage of occupation ? When the native population was suffering starvation what would happen to those prisioners?
l think you would find that many of them died... over 500, probably many more undisclosed
Good uestion!
Great first hand accounts, I wasn’t aware of this situation.
my mother's people, the Palmers, were on Jersey for the occupation, living near the German hospital....

Are you insane, America’s occupation of Japan made it into a blooming economy
Civilian minorities and partisan agitators had deportation to death camps and summary execution by the German occupiers to worry about.

Guess you forgot about the people they killed when there?
Slave labor, deportations, starvation. Doesn't sound very gentle.
