Sorry, one thing I didn't mention in my first loooong comment (sorry) is Stallone directed Rocky Balboa. His directing is so so different from Rocky 2 it looks more like John G. Avildsen directed this.

This was supposed to be the final film, but the it ended on such a sour note that fans largely rejected it. Rocky, after everything he's fought through and risen above . . . winds up right back where he started at the beginning of the series. It just didn't land with people. And it took Stallone 15 years to realize a more satisfying conclusion to Rocky's in-ring career.

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 3 роки тому +3

I love all the Rocky movies but it took Stallone 16 years to make Balboa because 5 was considered a failure and no one wanted him to make another one so all studios were basically rejecting him. It took Liongate known for taking risk for him to make it

Tommy Gunn - played by Tommy Morrison (January 2, 1969 - September 1, 2013) was allegedly John Wayne's nephew. He had won 18 fights in the heavyweight division, intriguing Stallone to hire him for the film. Morrison later won the vacant championship in a fight against George Foreman.

Each sequel was meant to be the last movie. When Stallone was writing this he decided that this would be the last Rocky and it would be appropriate to go full circle. He wanted to put Rocky back to where he loved him. Back to Rocky's roots. I personally love this as the final film. Which it was for a very long time. When's the Stallone announced he was making another Rocky movie I wondered how he was going to make one without Talia Shire, who insisted that she was never ever coming back to the Rockies series.

People shit on this movie but I must say for me it's one of my favorite's in this franchise. I also love that it ended in a street fight. Tommy was younger bigger up and coming boxer and with Rockys age and health issues probably would have beaten him in a boxing match or even worse. Rocky is from the streets and it shows in this fight. By the way RIP Tommy Morrison the man had a nasty left hook.

Stallone took a lot .. in this from Mike Tyson's story . The whole thing with Duke stealing Tommy away from Rocky ! directly taken from Don King , stealing and brainwashing Mike Tyson away from Kevin Rooney , and Bill Cayton . And all the quotes from Mickey to Rocky , taken from interviews of Cus D'amato , when he was talking about Mike .

I personally rank this as my least favourite Rocky film. Even though Rocky IV was cheesy, it had the right amount that was too much or too little, and it being an '80s film, it can get away with such things, whereas Rocky V felt like a betrayal of everything Rocky did up that point. His wealth, success, and everything he did felt undone. The next movie, Rocky Balboa, is definitely a good addition the franchise.

You can't blame Tommy to much. After all, being called someone's puppet or anything like that, it is gonna get to you after a bit. So getting pissed about it I understand. Also, he is in such a hurry and full of himself to think he can beat the Champion, it just all becomes to much for him and he explodes. Sad thing is, he aimed it at the wrong guy. Getting pissed at the press, should have gone on tv and called them out and corrected them by telling them HE is his OWN MAN and is the one in the ring fighting and Rocky is the manager, nothing more. He then falls into the trap of the fast talking, self important, self interested, money hungry shark and it all goes downhill. Tommy's ego and overall greed and impatience lead him to the Lion while he was still a housecat.

Here’s a recollection just for you, Shan. I met this guy once that was a rep for Ringside products. Punching bags, boxing gloves & the like. He was out on the town with Tommy one night. Now, from what I understand, Tommy grew up near a Native American reservation in Oklahoma. He got picked on a LOT, being a minority there. His fighting skills were honed growing up.
Anyway, these guys were out, having a brew, and this fella bumps into Tommy. Words were exchanged, things got heated, and Tommy & the rep, along with the spiller and his two friends went outside.
Tommy was looking down, kind of loosening up as that one guy & his friends were talking trash. The guy came up & took a swing and was met with a barrage of punches to the face! Down goes Frazier! Knocks the guy out cold. His friends were all of a sudden, palms out, apologizing, trying to get their swollen friend up off the pavement and out of there. Tommy went back in and resumed his beer.

Unpopular opinion - I really enjoy Rocky V! Great reaction, I've really enjoyed your experience and perspectives on the Rocky films, thanks for sharing.
Rocky IV is almost a "period piece". Those of us who watched it in the early 90s, particularly those of us who watched it as kids, grew up really attached to the excitement of the training montage and EPIC final fight. In retrospect, we all laugh about the "hooray, Rocky won the Cold War" thing, and the overall plot isn't as strong as the other Rockys, so I definitely understand why it's your least favorite. For us old-school Rocky nerds it'll always hold a special place haha
Rocky V has a MUCH worse reputation than it deserves. It is such a sharp turn from the general tone of the previous Rockys, especially its immediate predecessor. But for me, the performances from Stallone, Shire, and Young really shine and the final fight against Tommy had an amazing emotional payoff.
Thanks again for sharing man! Keep em coming!

I think 5 is excellent, besides the acting of Morrison, what's not to love? New angle w/ the father stuff, Rocky wanting to stay in the game after retiring using Tommy Gunn as an avatar., dead Mickey cameos, protege betrayal, and towering above all, an utter skewering to the crooked boxing world and a big F you to Don King

Rocky V has grown on me over the years, as I've grown older myself. I dunno if it'd a great movie to showcase on the channel since its in black and white (made in the early 70's though) but I do believe that you would enjoy, on your own time possibly, Peter Bogdanovich's 'The Last Picture Show' from 1971 featuring a young Jeff Bridges, Timothy Bottoms and Cybil Sheppard along with Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman and Ellen Burstyn. Nominated for 8 or 9 Oscars taking home 2 in the acting category which speaks to how well it was acted.

The problem with Rocky 5 is that it's not the least bit believable. Even if Rocky's accountant stole his savings and the IRS auctioned off all of his property, he would still be living comfortably off of his name alone, his connection with Tony Gazzo notwithstanding. His mob connections would not hinder his marketability given what Henry Hill was doing in the late 80's/early 90's. At the end of Rocky IV, Rocky was at his most marketable. He defeated the Soviet Union's best. Publishing companies would be lining up to get the rights to his autobiography. Movie production companies would be lining up to make movies about his life. He would have options.

  • @brysnerdery
    @brysnerdery 3 роки тому +2

I agree with your review. I think the only reason why I like Rocky IV so much is because I lived through it and it has sentimental value, because if we're talking about raw character development and script this movie is superior. For me, I thought the reasoning behind them losing all their money was a bit weak for me, and Tommy's acting is a little weak. But like I was trying not to spoil for you on the Rocky IV comments is that I do like the rags to riches then back to rags story arch however, bringing Rocky's story arch full circle, and it gave the franchise the grit, and Rocky the underdog status, that maybe 3 and 4 were lacking. I was glad to see Bill Conti back, but I do like the Rocky IV soundtrack work out to, but it definitely doesn't have the emotional impact that Conti's score has. I can see how fresh eyes would see this movie as having more substance than the previous film. I don't dislike any of the movies in this franchise but this might be the weakest one for me only because I feel like it has the weakest performances. That said, it still holds up pretty well, although that 'go for it' song is a little cheesy, but I still believe this is a strong movie with a lot of good qualities. I think you're really going to really like Rocky Balboa! RIP Sage Stallone. Very sad indeed.

editing was crap in this, but yes, thankfully it wasnt the last rocky movie, because the last one is good, and if anything, makes this movie seem a little better than what it is, because this is the crumbiest ending they could have.. pure 90s hip hop here, and not just the music, but the cringy looking jerky close ups of everyone too.. but, ive grown to at least appreciate some aspects of this movie, such as the begining where it shows the effects of his rocky 4 fight in the shower and such, the scene of him remembering mick giving him the necklace, the adrian scenes, and the general story of rocky that leads, thankfully to rocky 6

Cool to hear your opinion. You are obviously intelligent and you pay very close attention when watching movies. When this was new I was 18 and had been a Rocky fan since 1980. The first review I read about this film was in USA today here in Norway. They wrote that Rocky finally becomes realistic again in nr.5 and gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. People liked it a lot in 1990-1991 before it gradually got this bad rep. It is much better than the simple Rocky 4. That was embarressing. I saw 3,4,5&6 in cinema when they were new. The two first ones on tv around 1980-81 as a little kid. Lifetime fan.

I agree that Rocky 4 was kind of the weakest one as they made Rocky as super human. However, the beginning of Rocky 5 brought that down to human. They also wanted the Rocky character to die, which would have kept the realism, but just like Rambo they didn't kill him.
When I myself heard that Rocky Balboa was being made, I was kind of not liking it because, as you said here, this was Talia Shire Shire's last Rocky. Then I watched the first original trailer and I WAS IN (emphasizing not yelling). If you like movie trailers, you'll love this one. The trailer doesn't give anything but part in movie and trailer is a scene where Rocky stands in front of a car at night with the car's lights, it literally made him God like.
Burgess Meredith was still making movies when someone asked him. 2 movie I recommend would be Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men, a superior old time cast (Walter Mathew, Jack Lemon, the original Odd Couple, Ann Margret in 1and 2 and Sophia Loren in 2, all movies I recommend including The Odd Couple, 1968 and sequel 1998. Yes it was a cash in from the Grumpy Men series but still funny movie.
Another fight scene compared to this one, Keith David vs Roddy Piper in John Carpenter's They Live, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. So so sorry for a long comment hope you get a chance to read it.

Thought you might be interested in checking out a Western Series called "LONESOME DOVE" this series is based on four western novels written by Larry McMurtry. There were five television miniseries and two television series based upon them. Directed by Simon Wincer, the screenplay was by Peter Bogdanovich and Larry McMurtry intended to star John Wayne, James Stewart and Henry Fonda. But John Ford advised John Wayne against it. Eventually, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones costarred in this miniseries. I hope you give it a watch, It is a great Classic!

The reason so many people dont like this, is cuz this was supposed to wrap up the entire series. And many fans felt it was very underwhelming for a conclusion. "Rocky Balboa" (or 6) is, IMO, an excellent movie and a PERFECT conclusion

I actually like Rocky 5 better than Rocky 3, Balboa, and both of the Creed movies. It has great Mickey scenes, a decent soundtrack, and has a better overall lesson than "I have to win because my trainer died." It's unfortunate that the kid sucks and takes up a lot of screen time, but "You knocked him down. Why don't you try knocking me down now?" is a Top 5 Rocky quote.

    Underated Rocky film.
I like this one more then part 3.
I like Apollo in part 3, but thats it.
Tommy Gun is a better villian then MrT due to the writing.
The Hogan fight in 3 doesnt belong at all.
Part 5 shows that Rocky's fame hasnt ruined his soul and it shows that he is a steet fighter.
    Great Channel!

I'm not a big fan of Rokcy V I have to admit. For me it's the weakest of all Rocky movies. But I really looking forward to your reaction to Rocky Balboa. Together with the first ohne, this is my favourite movie of the franchise and I hope you' ll like it too.
Another suggestion for a nice and a little bit forgotten movie to watch is the 1990s Turtles movie. By far the best adaptation of the franchise.

Enjoy the boxing movie videos. Take a look at Cinderella man with Russell Crowe if you haven't seen it. I don't think it got the attention and credit it deserved. True ish (mostly, they took a few liberties) story of a down and out depression era boxer James Braddock who had one of the more remarkable comebacks in sports history.
The only minor valid criticism of the film in my opinion is they used the reigning heavyweight champion Max Baer as a two dimensional villain. But it was excellent all around even with that.

This was the first film in the series. That i didn't think was a good ending for the series. Even though I am probably biased towards the film because Tommy Morrison was a local fighter.RIP. As a boxing guy. I figured the Don King stuff was a bit on the nose. I do think its interesting that Stallone began using real boxers here and in RB.

The reason I loathe Rocky V is because it's nowhere near as good as the others. It tries to be like the first two, but it lacks the heart they had, and Rocky shows absolutely no respect for his wife and son throughout the film. Adrianne makes him retire because she's afraid he'll die based upon the medical reports given, and yet he goes out and street brawls with Tommy? It makes no sense. And he basically pushes his son aside for the glory of winning fights. It's just not a great film. I don't much care for Rocky Balboa either for the same reasons. But go ahead and see it anyway.

I agree Rocky 5 is better than Rocky 4. Rocky IV was a little too predictable. I didn't like it the overall plot anywhere near as much as the rest of the movies. One thing to keep in mind in Rocky Balboa is the change in context.

where is rocky 4? rocky 5 is ok but not very good. it suffers from the child friendly story and a very poor antagonist... despite and because of its 'back to basics' approach..

At the ending of the street fight when Rocky says "sue me for what" Its not so much what charge he would get its more about what he's gonna sue Rocky for. Remember Rocky lost everything.

Nice to see someone else appreciate this one. I think many have been far too harsh on it in the past, even Stallone infamously gave it a 0 out of 10! However Rocky Balboa is imho a vastly superior film which was a pleasant and very welcome surprise at the time. It was the perfect way to end the saga.
