  • We were at Shichigahama, NE Japan when the earthquake and tsunami struck on 11 March. Between looking after our neighbors and trying to rescue our car I took some photos and videos which I have now compiled. Let's remember this disaster, those who died, those who survive and the lessons for eternity we might learn from it.

Although the last wall didn't stop the first 2 waves, it stopped the last one...The walls will never stop all the waves ,but it will buy you time to evacuate.

There's things that Japan could do for times like these.
Have shipping containers placed in safe areas, these would contain emergency items for the public. I'm thinking of a big tarp shelter that can be put up quickly, seating for the elderly and disabled, cushions for everyone else, heating systems, food and water, an emergency radio station and a power generation system and the last thing I would include is medical supplies.
As shipping containers come in 20foot and 40foot sizes then it means that a small town might just need a 20foot container, but bigger towns and cities would require 1 or more 40 foot containers.
Also there could be other setups around the town's that have equipment that would help people clear the roads so help could arrive quicker.
But whatever happens we must remember the lost souls and be respectful.

Good intentions, but what about maintaining the container? The food inside going bad or when a tsunami hits and takes the container away

Good questions, they would have regular checks by nominated people.
Life rafts on a boat contain food and water and that would be good to consume 10 years after the raft is made. But as the container is on the land food and water can be replaced every year if needed.
As for the placement of the container, it would be up on a hill where people gather in an emergency so there would be no chance of it being washed away.

Something that would disrupt the chain of tsunami incoming waves.

Would something like a ramp be a good way to lesson a tsunami? You know, like a runaway truck ramp? A steep uphill filled with deep gravel to stop a runaway truck with no brakes. But for a tsunami, a upward slope to throw the waves back on itself?

Something like that anyways. I wish tsunami never happen. I hope a solution or idea can be thought up on how to combat a tsunami. A solution has to be out there somehow.

Thanks for your comment. Yes something like that is being done. Large walls 10m high are being built around the coast. And the seaward side has a low slope on it to lessen the force of a breaking wave.
