@@rafaelgoncalvesdias7459 look like a resident of Ouro Preto (24 years ago), I tell you this city is great to live in! Many people come to live here, including foreigners. Has a lot of employment in the area of tourism and commerce, it is a quiet and non-violent city. I really like living here, the only defect is mold, unfortunately very old houses suffer constantly from this problem, which is aggravated by humidity. Newer homes in non-central neighborhoods do not suffer from this problem.

One of the stories people there tell on why there are so many churches is because the old miners would make a promise to some catholic saint that if they find a big vein of gold they would make a church for that specific saint. So every church over there is actually a promise paid. Something awesome is that, over churches and chapels, I think there are more than 20 sacred places. I don't know if these stories are true, but I really liked them.

    Some interesting historical facts.
A little after the birth of the Republic, on the 1920s, brazilian architects inspired by National feelings started a movement of rescue and renaissance of the brazilian architecture with the intention on creating something legitimately Brazilian. So it was created the 'Neocolonial architecture style'. It was based on several elements that they found in old colonial buildings, specially in Ouro Preto, with emphasis on the churches. So today throughout Rio de Janeiro's suburbs you can find many many houses in this Neocolonial architecture built in the 20s, 30s and 40s. Also in the cities of Recife and Salvador but in a lesser extent. One great exemple of Brazilian Neocolonial architecture is the "Instituto de educação do Rio de Janeiro" in Rio. And another prime exemple of this architecture style is the "Largo do Boticário" in Rio, built by the famous architect Lúcio Costa who was one of the main establishers of this Style. Btw Lúcio Costa is also one of the main responsibles for the preservation law of Ouro Preto as a National monument.

The city has many churches because each one of them belong to one "Irmandade" (Catholic confraternity) which are groups devoted to a specific patron saint and, therefore, had specific churches.
Slaves, for example, had their own Irmandades gererally devoted to saints like Ephigenia of Ethiopia, Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict the Moor.
These Irmandades also were responsibles for things like the funeral of it's members (there were no cemeteries, people were buried under the Churches) and even paid for their retirement in some cases.

In fact, the School of Minas is now a museum, a museum of mineralogy. It was conceived as a palace for the governor, for a time it was a university and school and today it is a museum, but some of their rooms are used for classes even today when someone requests they lend it to lectures and the like... If you are still around here, visit the "school of Minas" and you will enjoy the collection of precious stones and historical pieces such as a scalindro.
