What an awesome talent.....that song never gets old....this stuff needs to come back to radio....
Christopher May true dat!!
It has. SiriusXM has a Bluegrass channel.
I think the late, great John Duffey was born old! He looks the same here in 70's as he did when I saw him in the early 90's. What a talent. I sure miss his unique vocals and quirky stage personae. Rest in Peace.
Duffey could be an acquired taste, but he was a great performer overall.
Sure miss that old Maryland boy!!!!
Skaggs - a legend on all instruments and one of the greatest bluegrass singers ever. Love his singing and energy.
A legend in his own mind.
Skaggs' tenor to Duffy's lead was really good. Yep, that's harmony, mate.
Ricky Skaggs, what a musician...fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and who knows what else besides a swell voice.
Just like Mark O`Connor.
@@69Curtdog , Mark is waaaaaaaay better than Ricky.
I consider them 2 of the top bluegrass singers/players in the business.
@713pbradley You must have completly lost your mind.....Duffey is probably the most underrated mando. player of all times and probably the best tenor singer in bluegrass history. The Scene changed the bluegrass scene forever, brought on the newgrass scene and everyone followed in there footsteps.
Is there no end to the talents of Ricky Scaggs?
He is an amazing entertainer!
This is an outstanding version of the song!
Both Ricky Skaggs AND The Seldom Scene in their prime.....awesome. ;)
Wow !!!!!! Awesome video of young Ricky on fiddle. If he only knew then that his County version would be a number 1 hit in Country Music !
@aspencer73 Right on Mr. Spencer! Duffy WAS indeed an incredible mandolin player -- his playing was full of jazz and blues licks I loved it. I have no idea who the self-appointed genius, and bluegrass critic, 713pbradley, is but I when I went to his channel I find it is not exactly showing any uploads of his playing! LOL
The fellow guitarist in my first band grew up with Ricky in Blaine, KY. He and I started the first Southern rock band in northern Indiana and we listened to only rock music. It took me years to appreciate good bluegrass and realize how talented these guys were.
.... back when you could go to a bluegrass festival and hear bluegrass music.....
Ricky is one of the best Men in American music of my lifetime (since 1950). I knew nothing of Bluegrass until around 1974 when I got a "sound job" doing John Hartford. His one man show and creative writing (I'm gonna see you get that golden Globe Award, for those golden globes of yours, cuz they're so fine).... that I had to see more and luckily got further education doing the Mid-America Bluegrass Festival shortly thereafter and several years in the late seventies/early eighties at Grassy, MO, Arrowhead Campground festival with some truly outstanding pickers and singers. Did Bill Monroe himself and some unusally outstanding Bluegrass, Outlaw Country, and Rockabilly folks in Norther Pennsylvania, twice, and many others. I have noticed that, since retirement (2002), there are very few that truly compare to the quality and are advancing the state of the art based on the best of the traditional..... But then there is Ricky..... God Bless all involved and those that respect and propagate this morally strengthening Blessed music. A Dios....
Check out "Mountain Faith" (the band) from N. C. for some more healthy moral reinforcement and also learn from history here on youtube for Those who fail to learn from history are bound to repeat (and compound on) its' mistakes...... yep.
NOTE: Seldom Scene was the band with which Linda o d' Roundtown had many, many hits....... ya gotta love it!
ACID GRASS HUH??????? Just the country side of the movement to revive and liberate the USA....... viva la liberation!
Say what you want but there's some shit-kickin' music that captivates all human senses effortlessly!
awesome!
Phil Rosenthal you are a musical genius yourself.
Phil, you are too modest ...ua-cam.com/video/Nk9vhhGyRyo/v-deo.html
I sure miss seeing the guitar and dobro in this video! They appear to be afterthoughts for whoever was behind the camera.
My two favorite bluegrass tenors.
OMG haterz, just enjoy the music of these talented musicians. And Ricky single handedly saved country music!
I was introduced to the music of the Seldom Scene 25 years ago in South Korea of all places. Huge fan ever since.
Skaggs trying to sing tenor to Duffey....Thats some funny stuff right there!!
He didn't try he nailed it.
TOO MUCH TALENT❤❤
We agree! --Rachel
This is Bluegrass at it best !!! :)
That makes me smile until I cry.
Since your pop country 80s phase...& then around the time Keith Whitley died, I really got into your music more heavily & it has grown from there as I've watched you grow, too. The video with Bill Monroe probably clinched it for me.
@Ricky Skaggs I don't mind, but I'm not all that interesting. But of course I'm flattered you ask.
1983 it was on Ricky's album "Don't Cheat In Our Hometown" hit #1 in 1984
Great post!
to aspencer73,if you had any musical know how you,d realize ricky is singing the melody and john a third above him its called harmony mate.
tony lee [australia]
If you want to see a young Ricky Scaggs watch "Foggy Mountain Special": He was on the Martha White show and played the fiddle .....7 years old....
l love most of his songs..Agua..Papua new guinea.
Phenomenal!!!
They make makin' good music look so darn easy!
I'm sure you have heard this before Sherwood............but you sure resemble Broderick Crawford a lot.
Wonderful duo!
My favorite tune.
Looks like John sneeked right on in there on ole Ricky hahaha I love it and John also!
Had no idea he could play the fiddle....such a talented musician.
Mighty fine..mighty fine...leter go boys...
Prachtig!!
A dream team? Yes I think so.
E
Man Ricky is spot on the way Uncle Pen really played it!
I can't say nothing, I'm still in awwwwww
@meanlezbo Dude...they were cuttin' up..I'm sure Duffey had the upmost respect for Curly ray.
He was a great friend of The Late Ralph Stanley.
Any one else notice he sang the third verse second?
Yes sir I did :)
I thought Ricky was going to take that mandolin from John, lol
Old Time Acid Grass!
holy cow, i never knew he played fiddle too
He plays everything!! Lol!!
He played the mandolin and sang Ruby . . .
@cyrus621 So you were around to watch Uncle Pen fiddle then? If not how the hell do you know WHAT he did? And so what anyway? Ricky or any other musician can play bluegrass the way he wants. Skaggs has has his share of problems by playing mandolin and fiddle were not two of them.
I doubt Pendleton Vandiver would put all that "look at me!" into his fiddling. Ricky here is already getting above his raising. Duffy is the entertainer here... great singing and a creative mando break.
Looks more like a couple of buddies sharing a smile.
Huh? So Ricky is excellent enough to show off mad skills, and... this offends you?
These guys are killer players, cutting up to amuse the crowd and each other.
And Ricky was the go-to fiddler when the Scene wanted to include one.
What’s not to like ? 🤷♂️
@cyrus621 , preach!
@@BoFrazer , yes, it’s offensive for Ricky to show off in a way that Uncle Pen would not. Yes, Ricky is a good musician, but he knows it, and he makes sure everyone else knows it. What’s not to like? He’s incredibly stuck up, and he’s very “Look at me! Look at me! LOOK AT ME!!!!”
oh my
Did he say acid grass?
this is how it was done.
this reminds me of growing up in cape breton supper done cows milked then fun begins
Duffey's mandolin playing is awesome,ur just mad cause Ricky got a burn from The Late Great John Duffey!! Yes, there is a e in his name!
'Acid Grass' ?! Ha...never heard that phrase before...
No Nightmares
Open a window
Close a door
Ain't gonna worry anymore
Go to sleep
Have a dream
With no nightmares
In between

Ah, the Seldom Scene... A Virginia Institution!

Ricky married my cousin Sharon white. Boy he was young here. Pick it boys!
Wow, I never realized Ricky went back that far before me. I guess he really did earn his stripes. No offense to military. I refer to the song Uncle Pen. I remember it after 1980 sometime.
Back when Ricky could still see his shoes. lol
What does Ricky Scagg's shirt say? Thanks for sharing this video!
Oh my Ricky kin Fiddle with the best of em! Who knew! -
He ain't bad with a guitar either.
Well said--now you get the doobie brothers and robert plant--go figure
Oh yeah. Ricky before he was Ricky.
People didn't consider Seldom Scene as bluegrass back in the day. If you want to see some real bluegrass it is everywhere. Try the Boxcar Pinion bluegrass festival next May. You need to learn how to look.
@cyrus621 Ricky was just having fun. that's all it was.
he's singing putting on the pounds constantly now
what year is this?
Lorton not Norton
duffy's mandolin playing sucked. but he's in the top 3 bluegrass tenor singers of all time.
You need to check out some more of John's playing. His mando was superb.
Cuban Pete got it flat right!
Man, that is a really YOUNG Skaggs
@Mandolin1944 I said "I doubt". No, I was not born before Pendleton Vandiver died. Ricky can indeed play the way he wants, and I can comment on it. Still a free country.
Can’t stand Ricky Skaggs and can’t “Uncle Pen”.
uncle pen! great version!
