- This took a while to do and is the reason why there's not been many big uploads lately. This is an entry-level job guide for the Puppetmaster job in Final Fantasy XI. Among the many jobs I use in-game this is one I've always got on hand and is by far the one I've found the most engaging to play as. There is a lot of information to relay in regards to the Puppetmaster so I'll include time-stamps for the various sections here in this description. I couldn't for the life of me find an NPC to replay the WHM and BLM Automaton CS's, this is why they're not in the opening section.
As always, your feedback and comments are appreciated and I'll do my best to answer to them as soon as possible. Alternatively, the Puppetmaster community on FFXIAH is very active so if you shoot any questions their way I'm sure they'll answer promptly. On that note, I'd like to extend a special shout-out to some of the posters on that forum as their input has informed various parts of this guide.

@@Ookami20 it's really fun. I don't play it as much lately because I'm gearing red mage and occasionally dancer but i don't regret my time with it and once my rdm is solid I plan on going back.

I just wanted to say that ive been playing FFXI since launch but i still learn something new when i watch your videos. They are very informative. Thank you for putting the time into it.
Made a new account awhile back since I forgot my old login info and always wanted to get into PUP. Love the job, I was going to main BST like I did near the end of me playing years ago. I first got WAR up and other jobs but got into BST late. PUP is my highest job right now and almost 99, and I absolutely love it because of how hands on it is. BST is either charm your pet or have items you use up. PUP is a pet you can upgrade in different play styles. I broke all the Genkai limit quests with PUP and it was fun, before it was WAR. It is expensive, I knew before hand since good friend of mine played it. Never knee how expensive until I was buying attatchments and pieces for the frames, I try to buy from NPCs but if cheaper at AH I will. I really enjoyed your guide for the Skillchain info and a couple other things, thank you for putting the time into making this video good sir!
This is a job I've delayed starting because of its complexity. Thanks for the guide. A lot of great information there with regard to gear and attachments. Please keep up the work.
It seems so overwhelming when you first start the job, but once you get the hang of it, you'll find that, while there's a lot to learn, it's actually all pretty straightforward.

Pet jobs were my fav job types in any game. When pup came out, I was on it soon as I could unlock. I honestly didn't have that much issue with it, but I was already pretty good making macros so over a new player I was probably better position to take it on. I absolutely loved first time I out DPS some high end people at various points in game. So long as my gear was least on par with their's. Pissed some healers off that my healer mode actually keeped parties alive a bit better, but those guys weren't very good healers to begin with.
Me too!! Omg and during the time healers used to be able to have demands on the party, like "only if my friend can come too" and they'd wanna take over. Healers were so rare so they kinda got away with it. But when I saw our lil buddy gets some spells earlier, since it's based on skill level, was like "wait a minute".
Toyed around with it. Go placement going. Would get a tank, DD and 2 support if I could. COR were everywhere, get a BRD with them and it became a hyper party. Between mana tank and dismiss with full hp to resummon for that limitless mana? It was one sweet.
When I returned to the game a few years ago, initially, and finally unlocked it again, was blown away by the changes. No more C- H2H for one lol.
I'm ready to go back now. One thing that's weird for me is everyone keeps going /war. I prefer /dnc. There's plenty gear and food we can get with double and triple attack. Then the Haste Samba speeds it up for constant attacks and tp. The built in sneak/invis is great for moving around looking for camps and all. Then there's still a provoke in there. I don't use a tank trust. I tank myself. Between all the guards and evasion, it's no real problem. The support trust kept me topped off. I still need to get the relic so I can get Victory Smite. I just really like PUP/DNC overall. Versatility and adaptability is the basis of the job. DNC sub gives that to the player as well, instead of only automaton. Just like it was weird to me that people stuck to DRG/WHM for solo. I got much better results from DRG/BLU.
nice, prolly need to do a part 2, for 2019, that would be awesome, the pet WSC with other pup pets are lightly covered by youtubers.

If you're trying to do the 5-step (?) skillchain at 26:20 it won't work with regular weapons. This is what I get for being away too long and not knowing about Aeonic weapons. Instead, try this: Shijin Spiral > Armor Piercer > Victory Smite > Armor Shatterer > Victory Smite. Needs lots of TA and STP and perfect trust setup it seems. My automaton is usually waiting on me!
I am surprised that SE has not given us new automation body and heads yet, I've always loved PUP, it was my 2nd 75 job after RDM, it was difficult to afford PUP when the results didn't pay out. Thanks for this guide!

Wonderful guide. Does it still hold now in 2021 after some job adjustments have been made, like Ice Maker and other Maneuver-eating effects no longer eating maneuvers but causing burden instead? I am more interested to know if the mage-types are in a good place or Valor-heard Sharp-body are still the all-round go-to because it's just too good. And I don't know if WSs for either of us have been tweaked at all!

Thanks for making this video, it's helped me quite a bit. I do have a question though: would it not be better to use the WHM head with the PLD frame? With WHM head you're still able to equip all of the earth and fire attachments listed in your tanking build, with the addition of more light capacity to equip Auto-Repair Kit IV. Perhaps there's something I'm not aware of about the PLD head.
PLD head gives more HP and, in my opinion, a far better SP ability.
Invincible generates a huge amount of enmity and can literally buy you 30 seconds in the event of an emergency.

I already asked that myself in the forums, or at least give us a few quests for some +1 versions of heads & frames since they're out of developer kits for "new" stuff to reuse old set photos
@@dzspdref Their comment about being out of Developer kits is a cheap cop out on their part to not update a job or any content. Since this posting, they've come out with various new things, so they are pretty much just lieing to everyone about that so they don't have to update things.
I soloed pup when at urghan came out. I usually got on after NA prime time so I'd sometimes get parties, but usually solod EM mobs at nearby camps. Coming from drg soloing, pup soloing was like easy mode, after levling dnc sub, I was almost invincible! Too bad it had that stigma of being weak, it was a job way too advanced for a game that the meta was all about min maxing. Kinda like loldrg, it suffered from issues of others not understanding the jobs role. It wasn't the best at anything, but could usually fill in the role while waiting for a res or a new pt member, if the player was good and understood the pet.
Funny. The loljobs were my fave. First was DRG. It was even worse because I was a Taru lol.
Pup was pretty strong from jump, even with the C rank H2H. Most people just didn't see the need to rank up their automaton skills, which was silly. Then people kept looking at the master and automaton dmg separately. But you're right. The mage versions got spells before players if the skills were kept up. At 50ish, when the dmg started to fall off slightly, saw that I could main heal a party better than a whm and with infinite mana. Focus all support on the DPS. Those were hyper parties with no down time.

A dev told me to go puppetmaster... I like it, but it does cost a lot of gil. I would have loved to see it in ff14. I got most of my attachments eitehr from farming or from the markeyboard, if they were cheaper than npc costs. I sold all the extra high level attachments I farmed for gil to buy more attachments from the mb or npc. The puppet made these farms really easy due to how solo friendly it is.
Excellent video. I'd like to add a couple of things that were missed by you that can be helpful to others watching this video.
1. WHM head, PLD body: This is by far the best tanking combo. You still get the defensive capabilities of the full PLD set, but with the WHM head, you get extra Light affinity. What this means is you can attach Auto Repair Kit IV, Optic Fiber, Flashbulb, and Auto Repair Kit I. Since Auto Repair Kit effects stack, you're essentially getting a massive Regen effect with just 1 Light Maneuver, as if you have an Auto Repair Kit V attached (it doesn't exist in the game, but this is basically what you get)
2. You are right about one thing. Automaton Skills are extremely important. There are 2 pieces of gear that will help, especially in terms of melee/ranged accuracy and attack. Naga Kyahan adds +10 to all Automaton skills. And Karagoz Pantaloni +1 (PUP Empyrean 119 legs) adds another +23 to all Automaton skills. Very highly recommended to have these two pieces equipped in your pet's melee set.
I should have mentioned it but the reason I like the full Valoredge configuration for tanking is because Invincible, which you can use with Heady Artifice, gives a LOT of enmity when used and I often have Enmity issues more than I do HP issues on the Automaton.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Benediction do the same thing enmity wise? It can also help save the group from a wipe in a dire emergency.
One more thing to add. It sucks you're on Asura. That's the one server I vowed never to transfer to if my current server, Shiva, gets to be too inactive.
I am confused. In your guide, you show the skillup attachment list, which requires 9/9 light, but my automaton only has 5/5 light slots. Am I missing something?
The Automaton Frame and Head will determine how many elemental capacity bonus slots you're allowed to use. Also keep in mind you get more elemental capacity bonus through job points at 100 job points & 1200 job points. It is ideal to do endgame content at least with 1200 job points on the Puppetmaster.
EDIT: OHHHH there's a separate EQUIP menu for the automaton? I did NOT even notice that...no wonder the attachments I bought made no difference! I have the opposite problem and I don't know if they've nerfed the automaton or something but I've been leveling PUP - currently level 83 - and I only have the starting frame, granted, but the thing does next to NO damage at all - I'm WILDLY outdamaging the thing with just birdbanes as my weapon - it's hitting for maybe 7 to 20 damage, the attack rate is VERY slow, and it often misses. Now, I wonder if this might be because I need a different frame or to put some attachments on it (still not sure how this maneuver thing works - I'm honestly not sure what it's doing when I use the maneuvers or if they're still active after the icon wears, which I assume it's not) - but I put an attack+ fire attachment on it for instance and it didn't really change anything. The skillups the puppet gets are VERY slow too - I'm 83 already and have set it on every mob I've attacked but they don't last long enough for it to skill up much so it's like level 70 in skill and less than 20 in magic skill. So maybe THAT'S why I guess? I just know it's not even doing a TENTH the damage I am as the master so there must be SOMETHING I'm missing if the automaton is supposed to be the main damage source. I'm going to try to get the valoredge frame now and see if that helps.
so in general, for magic tanking i heard that soulsoother head/harlequin frame are best because of shell V, but in the case of mobs that start with nukes (like prime avatars) how do you force it to use shell right away? just leveled it the other day and just playing around with it, always run out of mp before buffing completely because it's taking so much damage and needs to heal, then its a downard spiral. I'm pretty lacking in gear and just 102JP but even considering master PUP with good gear, i think it would still be an issue, since in the prime avatar II -like situations you cant target a trash mob to make it buff itself. wat do?
In my experience an Automaton will always open with Protect and then Shell, I've never found a way to reverse the order.
You'll want 1200 JP before you attempt anything major on PUP, having maxed out elemental capacity is a big deal.
Flashbulb Attachment for Flash?
No overdrive builds in this. Maybe another video for that?
I'm itching to return to Vana'diel. Like bad. As soon as i get a new power supply for my PC. I gotta start working on weapons for it. I can kill Apex mobs pretty easily from what i remember, but i dont have any of the special knuckles. So cant do the big skillchains. I merited the ws, and that's usually darkness. You kinda want light on most Apex tho.

Its a doll, it should be immune to status ailments (maybe that would be broken?)
Ls went in on Fu last night. Brought pup for cards and emergency tank. Our poor uber paladin got smoked 10 seconds in due to buff mismanagement. Everyone's shouting wipe and reset while I'm like "nah, my baby's got this". Put Fu in the corner and tanked him despite having 10 + buffs absorbed then stood back and laughed while Fu crit hit for 80. Honestly one on one auto can handle just about anything that doesn't Doom or have heavy enspell or spikes use.
It seems hard to get a decent CP PT pre getting your 100 and 1200 gifts. And it’s hard to cap skills without two optic fibers and Regen... the grind begins. Lol thanks for the guide.
Thankfully solo on apex with shanttoto for mb is fast.

SplitFinn your menus and the menu text look different than mine. They look more updated.
I use custom .dat files from the FFXI View Project.
You can find it easy enough and it's 100% safe to use, be sure to read through the instructions though.

You have "mouth noise" I was told once to eat a green apple before recording. It seems to completely get rid of all mouth noise.
So, in order to magic burst I have to deploy when Im going to sc and let it cast then?
I am kind of lost as to how to play with spiritweaver and none of guides really go into it?
Pretty much deploy and MB kuz you want 3x maneuvers ice to burst, and then back dark maneuvers to refresh MP while waiting for the next burst window. It should double burst pretty easy, if closing SC with another pup you actually have like 10-11 seconds burst window, the BLM pet will optimize for the Magic damage wall SE put in.

What is the easiest, most noob friendly job to play?
No job is super easy. Even the most basic DPS job needs to consider the enmity threshold. If I had to pick one, I think Monk might have the lowest skill floor because its defensive tools give it a wider margin for error than most.
Are the Godhands still a viable weapon for pup?
ShadowedDelsaber for pure DPS yeah, they lose to the Su5 now though.
Vere for Master Dmg.
Su5 for puppet dmg.
Mythic for Hybrid dmg.
In blm setup the puppet overload in like 10min. here you want to use the mythic. so you can run at least 2 ice.
I rarly use godhands. but it is good have them around ;D

I'm from the UK but studied in New Zealand for a year, Massey University in Wellington.
While going through the national museum there I came across the names of some Maori deities and found that Ruaumoko is the Maori deity of seasons, seemed a fitting name for a BLM or a GEO so I went with it.
SplitFinn haha I know exactly what it means man, I'm Maori myself, I love that you have taken such a name! Are you on Asura? I stopped playing recently as the reddit LS I was in disbanded, but I've been missing it! May just get back into it now and see if I can spot you :)
I'm taking a break from the game for a little bit until I get more stable full-time employment now that my studies have finished. I will be back though.

Would absolutely love to see pup in ffxiv. Need more pet jobs tbh.
Why this isn't in 14 is so crazy since they always talk about needing more gil sinks lmao this would be perfect for max level players to use. If you're gets destroyed, you gotta rebuild a new one from scratch. (Ofcourse have a regenerating base frame that you can always go back to if you can't build a new good one) and it can play any role, the first class that queue as any roles for content. I think it would be an amazing addition if scaled and balanced to make it group viable and not a limited class, blue mage is so cool but the game is locked away from it. If they just did away with the limited class system and just scaled down ability damage. It could all be great fun additions to ff14
