    Thanks so much. I think I e already started doing a lot of these intuitively, but it’s helped to hear someone articulate and crystallise them for me out loud. I think the one problem i need to fix for the last one, having a daily project, is making sure my space is set for me so that I can show up. If the space and or the tools are a mess or I can’t find them then it just won’t happen, other things will naturally be more important

    Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo are excellent tools for illustration. And you don't need a subscription. ;-)

    Hi! Thank you so much for sharing, it’s really helpful to hear from someone who’s been through the process. Thank you for your honesty! You mentioned a book you read in the beginning of your career, but I can’t find back to the name. Do you remember which book that was?

      Thanks Rebekka! Perhaps it was Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards? Does that sound right?

    Thank you so much for this video Tom, it was very helpful! I am struggling with prioritizing and structuring my time around these points. Is it a linear process? First master drawing, then move to painiting? Once you've mastered traditional media, then move to learning digital tools? I should tell you that I'm 42 years old, have a demanding career, and I have two kids. So time is limited!! But I also have a dream of being an illustrator or a surface pattern designer, and can't seem to let it go, so I would really love your insight on how to structure my time around learning all of these important skills. Again, thanks so much for all of your videos, I really enjoy your channel a lot! Maya

      Hi Maya, so glad you found this video helpful. The tips can be followed almost in any order, but I suppose some sort of prepare you for others, such as learning drawing before all other media - because drawing really is the most foundational artistic skill you can hone. You can learn digital before analog tools, or both simultaneously … it's just that starting with analog tools keeps you focused more on developing skills rather than the tendency to seek out technological short cuts (if you're anything like me!). Try not to worry about how late in the game you are. There's no sense in trying to rush things at this point. Just enjoy the learning process - you'll actually enjoy being creative more, and you will more naturally discover your voice. The key of course is that you do something, even if just a little bit, every day. Please watch this video (ua-cam.com/video/c-ZIMQgf9dY/v-deo.html) if you want to know my thoughts on teaching yourself illustration. Thank you so much for the comment.

    Amazing tips! Also what's your opinion on being a generalist illustrator, as in being able to draw in many ways but nothing established. Do you think it'll be a bad idea in the long term, because it's difficult to establish your brand and trademark style without being consistent for too long?

    • @TomFroese
      @TomFroese  Рік тому +3

      Hi Sharanya, thank you! It's really up to you how versatile you want to be. There are two kinds of illustrators - "rock stars" and "problem solvers". Rock stars have one style and Problem solvers have many. We all find ourselves somewhere on this spectrum (I'm closer to "Rock star" but am not as strict with my one style as I could be). Check out my class "The Style Class" skl.sh/3S6PCF1 to learn more about this.

      @@TomFroese I am slowly realizing that having a single style is a bit difficult for me, I'm slowly becoming the problem solver kind :D

    Your advice is inspirational, thank you so much ! Been thinking about illustration for years but my biggest road block has always drawing from imagination. Really appreciate how you explain the process of transitioning from drawing observationally to creatively. Will definitely be signing up to skill share to do your courses.
