Been following dylan for 60 years. Saw him 35 times since 1965. Met him by chance in cleveland I July 1991 by chance. Shook my hand. I got tickets to see him in Akron ohio on October 21 of this year 2023. Might be his last tour. Noone can write like that. A genius.

@waynejohanson1083 never said one word to me . Saw him walking I yelled at him he looked over and saw me with my hand out. The reason why he came over to shake my hand was I stood still and did not make a move toward him. I did not threaten his safety. Shook my hand. Touch touches your hand with no grip. A very power man in person. He is everything what they say about him. I got lucky that's all. He would of signed a autograph for me but I did not ever think I would run into him. Saw him in Akron ohio Saturday October 21 2023.

I was born in 63 and I have said in music that the person I would love to meet is this same person, respect, nice to know that such a slow song can have that many admirers. In my life there has not been a song writer ever who has expressed themselves in their daily world.

Dylan met Joe Gallo once at a party. Then when Joe, got out, Dylan was invited to his "Getting Out" party. They were friends, that is why every person & place mentioned in this song is fact. Same here, RIP Joey. I'm 71, God how I wish we had men like him. He claims in a '60 minutes' interview that he answers to a "higher" power and alluded to Satan...Sold his soul and will have to answer for that. Or will he? Life on planet Earth is tolerable when insulated by millions of dollars, his is now a life WITHOUT limits. The Book says: For the love of money is the root of all evil... A rock and metal fan and guitar player, this album has long been on my Desert Island Disc list. Having grown up in NJ just a short drive from NYC, the "Hurricane" Carter story was known to all of us in our late teens and early adult years. But it was the mournful playing of the violin throughout this album that to this day keeps it as one of my favorite listening albums of all time.

    Lyrics:
Born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in the year of who knows when
Opened up his eyes to the tune of an accordion
Always on the outside of whatever side there was
When they asked him why it had to be that way, well, he answered, just because
Larry was the oldest, Joey was next to last
They called Joe Crazy, the baby they called Kid Blast
Some say they lived off gambling and runnin' numbers too
It always seemed they got caught between the mob and the men in blue
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
There was talk they killed their rivals, but the truth was far from that
No one ever knew for sure where they were really at
When they tried to strangle Larry, Joey almost got hit the roof
He went out that night to seek revenge, thinkin' he was bulletproof
Then, the war broke out at the break of dawn, it emptied out the streets
Joey and his brothers suffered terrible defeats
Till they ventured out behind the lines and took five prisoners
They stashed them away in a basement, called them amateurs
The hostages were tremblin' when they heard a man exclaim
Let's blow this place to kingdom come, let Con Edison take the blame
But Joey stepped up, he raised his hand, said, we're not those kind of men
It's peace and quiet that we need to go back to work again
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
The police department hounded him, they called him Mr. Smith
They got him on conspiracy, they were never sure who with
What time is it? said the judge to Joey when they met
Five to ten, said Joey, the judge says, that's exactly what you get
He did ten years in Attica, reading Nietzsche and Wilhelm Reich
They threw him in the hole one time for tryin' to stop a strike
His closest friends were black men 'cause they seemed to understand
What it's like to be in society with a shackle on your hand
They let him out in '71 he'd lost a little weight
But he dressed like Jimmy Cagney and I swear he did look great
He tried to find the way back into the life he left behind
To the boss he said, I have returned and now I want what's mine
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
It was true that in his later years he would not carry a gun
I'm around too many children, he'd say, they should never know of one
Yet he walked right into the clubhouse of his lifelong deadly foe
Emptied out the register, said, tell 'em it was Crazy Joe
One day they blew him down in a clam bar in New York
He could see it comin' through the door as he lifted up his fork
He pushed the table over to protect his family
Then he staggered out into the streets of Little Italy
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
Sister Jacqueline and Carmela and mother Mary all did weep
I heard his best friend Frankie say, he ain't dead, he's just asleep
Then I saw the old man's limousine head back towards the grave
I guess he had to say one last goodbye to the son that he could not save
The sun turned cold over President Street and the town of Brooklyn mourned
They said a mass in the old church near the house where he was born
And someday if God's in heaven overlookin' His preserve
I know the men that shot him down will get what they deserve
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away

Such a beautiful tune! Just a beginner here, and I've been pushing my Bob Dylan journey (for the 3rd time in my life; I feel like I've finally reached maturity for his sophistication) for the past 2mth. This tune sounds better the 15th time I hear it compared to the 14th...with plenty of growth to come. He certainly hit the depths of art, humanity, and spirituality that many "comparable" greats failed to even come close to.

    🎵🎶🎵🎶
There was talk they killed their rivals, but the truth was far from that
No one ever knew for sure where they were really at
When they tried to strangle Larry, Joey almost got hit the roof
He went out that night to seek revenge, thinkin' he was bulletproof
Then, the war broke out at the break of dawn, it emptied out the streets
Joey and his brothers suffered terrible defeats
Till they ventured out behind the lines and took five prisoners
They stashed them away in a basement, called them amateurs
The hostages were tremblin' when they heard a man exclaim
Let's blow this place to kingdom come, let come Edison take the blame
But Joey stepped up, he raised his hand, said, we're not those kind of men
It's peace and quiet that we need to go back to work again
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
    🎵🎶🎵🎶
    🎵🎶🎵🎶
It was true that in his later years he would not carry a gun
I'm around too many children, he'd say, they should never know of one
Yet he walked right into the clubhouse of his lifelong deadly foe
Emptied out the register, said, tell 'em it was Crazy Joe
One day they blew him down in a clam bar in New York
He could see it comin' through the door as he lifted up his fork
He pushed the table over to protect his family
Then he staggered out into the streets of Little Italy
    Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
    Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away
    🎵🎶🎵🎶

In 1996 Dylan performed Joey at the Bronco Bowl in Oak Cliff. This is the Dallas neighborhood where Stevie Ray Vaughan grew up and where Lee Harvey Oswald fled after the events described in Murder Most Foul. It was built in the 50's as a combination bowling alley, indoor putt putt and small concert venue by the son of H.L. Hunt (the REAL Jed Clampett) who probably funded the John Birch Society back in the day. Funny how all these threads of Americana blend to weave this Great American Tapestry. The next day I asked the owner of the small store I worked at if he liked the concert? He said it was okay... I wish he had played more of his old songs...who wants to pay to hear him sing JOEY?

Beautiful song, Bob Dylan once again shows his genius for Lyrics. God Bless You Bob, I'm a fan for 56 Years!!! All those years his and all the songs, His Lyrics are pure Genius. I'm still trying to Interpret "Desolation Row" 50 Freakin years and I still can't interpret it. Love the melody & guitar work in that song. The Lrics?, Well as I said Bob Dylan is a GENIUS

Dylan was so naive to beatify Joey Gallo. He was not a hero of the working man. He was a violent and vicious gangster. That's it. Now it's cool to write a ballad about his bizarre life, but not to sing that the man was a hero. He was a monster.
Having set the record straight, it is a terrific song. It's just that Hurricane Carter was a violent man but actually a real hero, doing time for a crime he did not commit. Joey was not innocent.
