NEATH ABBEY | ONE of South Wales' most IMPOSING Ruins used for DR WHO and MERLIN

- Neath Abbey, located near Neath in South Wales, is one of the largest and most impressive monastic ruins in Wales. Founded in 1130 by Richard de Grenville for the Savigniac order, it later became a Cistercian monastery in 1147.
Known for its wealth and influence, Neath Abbey thrived during the medieval period, with its monks engaged in agriculture, sheep farming, and metalworking. Its beautifully designed Gothic church and extensive monastic buildings made it a spiritual and cultural hub.
The abbey began to decline following the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII in 1539. The monastic buildings were repurposed as a mansion and later an industrial site during the 18th century, reflecting the evolving needs of the area.
Despite its changing uses, much of the abbey’s original structure, including the church, cloisters, and chapter house, still stands, offering a glimpse into its grandeur.

he ruins of the abbey and church are huge. It would be cool, if it were possible to access the upper floors, the view from there must be amazing. The drone footage looks stunning.
A beautiful place, that's for sure. I'm glad we have what we have. A great place to visit with a wealth of history. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Alessa
This ruin is massive..
As i listen narration, I imagine what really happened on this land you are putting your steps one to another.
Bitter history but don't you feel the energy from the past...
Wow, this is USA is lack of...since it is a young country
Thank you always for making my day. Especially my comment kept vanishing ..frustrating....
Great and beautiful abbey and place tour, nice sharing, big like 47th!
Many many thanks
Beautiful music. This video brings back memories of my first and last visit of Neath Abbey back in 1974. As an 8 year old I even drew a picture of the Abbey, which is in a journal my mum helped me write. It's such a shame that Henry VIII's avarice resulted in such beautiful structures being left in ruins. I really enjoyed seeing it from the drone's perspective.
I'm Dara's husband, BTW. This video was recommended to me today and it was a fun surprise to click on it and hear about the abbey's connection to Berkeley Castle!
Love the history you give Alessa...as I watch this again...I watch the beautiful arches in this beautiful abbey...such a massive space...so many hundreds of years as an abbey...you are so lucky to live in a country with such a long life with history...Love another good ghost story...but no white lady🤣 I think we were writing it at the same time...another amazing job Brett and Alessa...thank you for bringing me on this journey through time with you today have a wonderful week ahead!!!
What a massive estate and a top-notch tour! Simply awesome!
Sunday is p o p great work again ❤❤❤❤
Big up Johnny, appreciate you!
Hi Alessa & Brett.😍 Neath Abbey looks incredible! The history and ruins are fascinating, and it's amazing to learn about its connections to Doctor Who and Merlin. Great narration👍Greetings from us. 👍
Neath Abbey. Wow. Yes I can imagine it being a fabulous place as film location. Brett made a great job of it too. South Wales. Maybe there is a slight chance I can visit here - just saying 😉! Though Im not sure I could document and present it in the same caliber as you two did. Wonderful, another awesome experience. Lovely to have as my wake up watch in the quiet moment of my day. 👏💕. Thank you. 🇳🇱🙋🏼♀️🥝
Hi bestie ❤ I am here watching your amazing premiere ❤ Wow ! I love it ❤ Have a great day ❤ hugs from Hendo and Rita
Sorry for the late viewing. It's been a busy week. This ruin looks huge, plenty left to see. Good old Henry and his dissolution 😮.
Great done footage it give a good idea of the scale of the Abbey.
This is a true hidden gem 😍. I can imagine how magnificent this would have once looked.
It's understandable why this location has been used for filming. Cool, that Dr Who and Merlin was also filmed here.
Very much enjoyed the ghost story 👻.
The drone footage was incredible. A very professional, well edited video.
Very much enjoyed watching.
Matt & Bec 😊❤
Hello Alessa, such a lovely video, loved hearing your narration, such a lot of history, I loved the arches, the abbey was such a huge ruin, glad it is well preserved, enjoyed the ghost story and the drone footage Brett was amazing it showed the abbey in all its glory, thank you for sharing, take care x Julie and Tony x
Hi Alessa & Brett, this abbey, like many others, went through lots of upheaval and turbulent times. The ruins looked magnificent. It would have been even more splendid back in the day. It was amazing and surprising that the abbey became a copper works. Yay, a ghost story! 👻 Interesting it has been chosen for several film locations. Brilliant views from above too! ❤
The sheer scale of some of these Abbey's & their estates is just mind boggling.
Looks amazing, the drone footage really show how large a sight it was, wonderful to see and learn about its history 😊
Time for another fun-filled historical trip back in time. We may have been here before but Dr. Who wasn't talking.
Another masterfully crafted episode! Educational and simply enjoyable ♥️♥️
Glad you enjoyed it! thank you so much!!!

Really do appreciate you Heiko and Dany. Thank you so much for the kind comments x
Very nice video. This is one of the places on my list yet to visit. Didn't know it was this big a place but it sits quite hidden behind an industrial estate it is often missed. Goes to show what is hidden on your doorstep. What it must have been like back in the day!
Thanks so very much for watching, appreciate it very much!! I know right, you wouldn't expect it considering it's so hidden away, worthy of a visit for sure! As are Coity and Neath castle nearby! :D Thanks so much for watching
This is a brilliant abbey and one i haven't been too brilliant info as usual and a great show around
Thank you so much Butchy! Appreciate it!
I live just above Resolven village in one of the five original manor houses in the Vale of Neath. History does not record when it was built, but does record that it was one of the properties used as a base, or grange, by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey. There are many references in the excellent tome 'The History of the Vale of Neath' by Phillips D Rhys.
Fantastic, that's very interesting to hear! Thank you for leaving a comment, its appreciated :D
What a wonderful view 😊 you guys really stepped up the visuals!!!
Thanks so much! 😊 you're sooooo lovely 😍
I’ve driven past there but never been in. Fantastic place 👌❤️
