LOVE Christopher Ward ... great designs, great quality, Swiss ... in my opinion one of the best value for money watches out there (Longines prices + as good if not better quality) ... everything all micro-brands should aspire to be.

I actually like the proportions of the CW over the Explorer 2. The slightly thinner bezel looks better in my opinion.

I have this beautiful watch in the Black dial on bracelet. I have been telling EVERYONE just how much " bang one gets for the buck". After almost a year, it has become one of my favourites to wear & my opinion is even more re enforced as time passes.

I would say no, it’s a big financial risk for you - stick to what you specialise in, which is leather.
The problem with Staib is that each and every style of bracelet comes in different thicknesses, multiple lug widths, then each lug width comes in 2 finishes, brushed or polished, then each finish of each style comes in 2 or 3 sizes (lengths) and then there is the butterfly clasp vs the diver style. To get stock in for variations of even one bracelet style would be hugely expensive, unless you are talking about their Milanaise, but I don’t feel people choose Staib for a $40 Milanaise.
You’ve got a bunch of established, low overhead, recognised vendors who have enough revenue and stock turnover to keep all these combinations in stock who you will have to compete with, Eg Long Island Watches and others.
The only way around this be to just get lug width 20, brushed (more versatile), medium size, diver style deployant and you would satisfy maybe 50% of people.

Very nice review of a beautiful watch.
I own two Christopher Ward watches, their case design is what hooked me.
I love mesh bracelets, would like to see the difference in the two you are considering.
    That being said......
I would exercise extreme caution investing a lot of money in inventory.
I have 35 years experience in retail sales, my observation is if 100 people request you stock a product you will be lucky if 10 actually purchase that product.

Thanks for the CW review Tim and I enjoy your content and perspective. Don't forget the standard quick release and quick micro adjust on the CW bracelet that makes for great convenience and comfort. My daily driver is a CW and despite owning more established brands and interesting pieces, my CW wears great and with much less worries about damage due to the exceptional value pricing.
Also, yes on the mesh bracelets. I'm a fan of them and have looked at them several times without pulling the trigger.

Thats's a good a point about bracelets Shawn.
Quick release is what brands should be perfecting in todays market, yet so many brands are still not offering on the fly adjustment. The difference it makes to daily wearability can't be understated.

On a whim I picked up a mesh bracelet from China for $US 6.00. The quality is surprisingly good, the clasp is secure and on the wrist I doubt I could distinguish it from an expensive one. It's good enough for me!

    • @anthonysmith2982
      @anthonysmith2982 2 роки тому

Yeah, you can really luck out with Chinese bracelets / watch bands. I've paid ~ $10 for single pass woven / canvas (& maybe a little more for) leather Chinese straps from eBay & AliX. Sometimes you get what you pay for but other times it's surprisingly good. Worth the risk imho.

Like the CW, but understand the movements are apples and oranges….completely different use concepts, the CW being a “caller” GMT, good for office workers tracking another timezone, not so good for travelers as the wearer has to stop the watch to change the local time and after spinning all the hands to the correct new time, then has to go to position 2 to quickset the original 24 hand back the zone it was originally set to, then find a time source (cell phone) to reset the second hand sweep correctly.
With a traveler GMT like the Rolex, all the wearer does is go to position 2 and set the hour hand to new local time. Done. Watch movement never stops, 24 hour hand and minute hand never change. Sweep hand keeps on ticking.

Another thing to mention is their proprietary micro adjustment system. Works great and is not too bulky. Though a gripe they had with the C60 Trident was that for a lot of people the micro adjustment was either on the inner edge or outer edge. Therefore they added a half link with the introduction of this watch. I asked if I could order one for my Trident and they shipped it pretty cheaply.

Can't beat CW for quality/price imho. The normal C63 will probably be my next one for the collection.
Big fan of Staib, well worth the money. Big investment for a seller, & tho I'm sure margins are respectable it's a lot of capital to have tied up - if there's enough potential volume sales out there it'd be a great addition to your shop.
    Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Homer, Serica has a tapered mesh. It has a fitted end link *and* they dont sell it separately..!, but I've had really good results in reaching out to a few micro-brands and asking to buy bracelets or advice on where to source things and found them really helpful. I'm guessing they do a heap of research during prototyping and generally have a broad knowledge about where to source stuff. Could be worth an email?

Sorry I am late to the party, The watch is a 39mm but I see the bezel is a smaller size, but because of this size does it make the watch wear larger looking on the wrist, I like 40mm to 44mm for my wrist the 39mm Tudors are too small looking on my wrist, If you have an opinion on this I would appreciate it, Thanks for the video , I happened to be looking to buy the Green version of this watch and right now I have picture lust for the watch since I have never seen one in my hand . Again thank you

I was just talking about this watch recently! I'm trying to stop buying watches like this whenever they pop up but man, Explorer II looks, great finishing and movement and a reasonable size? It's been hard to say no. Will probably get one once I've shrunk my collection a bit, unless Tudor finally does a Black Bay 58 GMT which would be where all my money would go instead.

Great review. I recently got the hunter green model with the Italian camel leather strap and the black rubber nylon hybrid. I LIKE the watch, but not my favorite in my small collection. However…with the CW Italian leather it is the most comfortable watch I have. It is like having a pillow on my wrist. While I think there may be better choices for a one watch collection (specifically referring to my green variant), it is a fun and solid addition to a collection. Plus, I had an unforeseen complication, and the people at Christopher Ward came through with amazingly exceptional service. A++ service behind this brand.
I would enjoy watching a review of bracelets. But, if it is “damn expensive,” I bet I would enjoy some less expensive content just as much 👍

Mesh Bracelets love them and have struggled to find quality:
    BUT .
The watches I have that I want on mesh are often older ( Seikos actualy ) and are not necessarily 20mm but often 18mm. Must be many 20mm watches crying out for a mesh , classic divers maybe dressing them up a bit . But I don't know .
That said I wonder if the markert for decent mesh is at least as significant as niche leather. My thinking is that mesh is a straight forward design. You are in or out. Leather ? I think is more varied in what people want. For example your 18mm Caseback watches would look good on my gold tone 1971 weekdater but your 20mm is not at all ruged enough looking ( imo ) for my alpinist . A mesh is a mesh is a mesh and will suite any of my watches that suite a mesh. If I am looking for a mesh I only really have to consider quality . I am glad I have made that ( un) clear. All the best Richard
ps watch of the week to look at: The 2002 Delbana ,Della Balda . Jaw droopingly sexy imo.

But it's now a real Brand with a lot of model, dress, diving, chrono, GMT, Military (UK NAVY, RAF,etc) and they have now in house caliber. They are well known for their outstanding quality/Price, even if it's going up slowly.

    Hi CBTim.
Yes to mesh bracelets. About a year ago I bought a high quality mesh bracelet from a European supplier. It was well worth the extra $. Perhaps a Beads of Rice bracelet may also be worth a thought? I assume that most of us who follow you are fans of vintage and/or re-issued timepieces and a high quality BoR bracelet is almost a must have for those of us with vintage and vintage inspired watches imho.
Re. the CW; it's very close but no cigar for me.
I struggle to get past the branding and that counter balance. I'm not big on the hour hand either. It's *so* close to the Exp. II that I think Steinhart's homage/copy of the original Exp. II (ref. 1655) is not only a better buy at ~ $500, but a better looking watch with identical specs. Or perhaps better still? Lorier's $800 ode to the original bakerlite bezel Rolex GMT (ref. 1675), if you can catch it when it's in stock!

Obviously It’s your watch purchase, but getting an OEM bracelet of that quality including quick adjust for such a low cost is an absolute bargain. You can buy a leather or rubber strap anywhere, anytime. I have to admit though, it does look pretty damn good on that “camel” coloured leather strap. 😀

Caseback mesh you say huh? Must be STAIB or Bear right? Both are great for the price but STAIB is something else. For a good price I would be interested ;) One thing I always wondered, why does noone make a mesh with fitted endlinks, that would be really awsome :)

Honestly I don’t mind a date being at 3 or 6 but when I see it in the 4-5 area I get itchy

Tim, great video. I've thought about this one numerous times. Very informative.
Quick question, if you don't mind. I'm starting a UA-cam channel. Not about watches. About meditation. Trying to research cameras and microphones. What is your setup? Your audio is very good. What mic do you use? Camera?
Cheers buddy. Keep up the good work.

Audio technica clip on microphone (around 180 Euros)
Canon EOS 200D camera, upgraded with a 900 Euro Canon lense. Camera is the simple part I think. Even a modern iPhone should do the job. The outro I often film with a pretty old phone.

I guess they're nice but I won't wear a man's full name on my wrist. This is one is clean and sharp but nothing special imo. Good job, good effort. I'm not that into mesh bracelets so I can't say what you should do from the standpoint of mesh. Always a pleasure, Tim, you rock!

So you don’t wear tshirts at all? What if you are on holiday and are going to the beach? A polo instead? I live in the tropics and have been working from home the past two years so T-shirt , shorts and flip flops are my daily uniform, my poor dress shoes are feeling unloved.

    • @CasebackWatches
      @CasebackWatches  2 роки тому +1

Polo is an option. I prefer just normal shirts with collar and sleeves but made of a lighter cotton. I roll up the sleeves and the beach shirt is ready. But I do wear flip flops since I broke a foot couple of years ago and had to wear them over months.

It looks good I guess. If you line the explorer 2 that CW will be a nice watch. I myself newer liked the explorer 2. therefore i don‘t really like this model either.

A nice watch, but CW are getting pretty pricey these days. It would be interesting to see what the mesh bracelet is like if you can get a sample. I have a couple of Hong Kong meshes 17mm and 19mm bought because that all could get that's not leather in that size and I like them. Vostok do a range but I couldn't bring myself to send money in that direction.

I would say maybe. The bracelets look nice but they should send you some for free, you are helping them to seel their products. If not I wouldn't bother. Also they need to check their webpage, doesn't seem to have the security certificates...
