- In this video you'll see a review of my Datsun 280z MSA 3-2 header and twice pipes exhaust and how to improve it!
Check out the exhaust on my 1978 Datsun 280z! I've had this exhaust setup for almost five years now and I love the way it sounds. We had to modify it in a couple different ways for it to be usable long term.
First I go over what individual items we ordered for this exhaust system, those items are the MSA 3-2 header and the Twice Pipes system from The Z Store. Next we added some exhaust hangers and a generic catalytic converter.
When we first got the exhaust, it hung really low and we were always hitting things with it on the road, after some time it actually fell off! After it fell off, we realized that the only way to get it fully secured was to take it to an exhaust shop and get some real exhaust hangers installed. During that visit we also got a high-flow catalytic converter added to the system to help cut down on the fumes coming into the cabin.
Overall, its a great system for its extremely low cost, but it requires a bit of work to get it to fit just right. Watch the video, let me know what you think! I think it sounds awesome and I really enjoy the sound, it's not too loud with the catalytic converter and a full interior.
In the future I'm going to make my own version of this out of stainless steel which will definitely be an exciting project, if you want to see that - subscribe to the channel!

Beautiful car dude! I hope our z looks that good one day!
Thank you man! It’s taken a ton of work but it can happen, just gotta continue to work on it consistently :). Let me know if you run into any questions along the way
... god I gotta get mine running.
Is there sound deadening in your interior?.
If so, what kind?.
Yes lots, dynamat, wool mat, and full carpet and interior
Great video thanks for walking through it. I’m still deciding on my exhaust setup. I noticed you have a shroud on your aluminum radiator. Where did you get that? I don’t have a shroud and the one off my old stock radiator doesn’t fit. Love your build! Thanks
Hey man, thanks for watching! Believe it or not that’s the stock shroud with minor modifications and I painted it silver. It fit pretty well over my champion radiator!
@@JordanPayneLV Jordan, really like your vid’s, I like your approach to making your car uniquely yours and it looks good. I picked up a 280z fan shroud today at a salvage yard. How did you attach it to your aluminum radiator? Also I really liked your video installing the BRE lower lip. It cam out great. I had bought the Xenon Air Dam and I’m seriously disappointed in the quality and won’t be using it. I’m going to do something like you did. Just need to get some stock valance pieces.
@@av8ferg237 thank you for the compliments man! Yeah it’s hard to choose a front valence that is unique but also good quality. Definitely go with the Motorsport auto one, the carbon was great quality! And I cut little lines in the side so that it would match up with the bendable tabs on the champion radiator. It wasn’t too much but did need a little cutting on the shroud :)
I've heard about people having to use different shims in order to prevent it from leaking. Was that not the case for you?
I’m not sure about shims because it needs to be perfectly flat, but I’d say take a look at the manifold on something that is flat, and see if it has a curve. Regardless, tightening from the middle outward is going to give a good seal. I don’t think any shims would actually be good on an exhaust flange
You can get a thicker gasket, a higher quality gasket that will help seal something with a minor warp. Those are sometimes a bit pricey but worth it in the long run. There is also copper gasket spray that you can use that helps too
When you say "Do the interior" do you mean like, just having one that is complete or getting a newer sound resistant one? I'm gonna get this exhast for mine and I'm wondering
Having a new interior with sound deadening and all the plastic panels covered in fabric or vinyl
Doesn't a collector defeat the purpose of a 6-2-2 header?
Yeah that’s how I felt after receiving the twice pipes, and it still does. But the benefit of having a collector means more torque at a specific RPM range for scavenging and because it’s still 2 small tubes at the exit and through most of the exhaust, the tone is higher pitched
280 bucks for one, is because it’s one. Not two
Even at 560 for 2, that would be a deal! But yes
Duuuuude that sounds sooooo good!!!
Thank you man!
Yup also want a stainless version.
Yessir that would be awesome! I’m debating whether I should just go full send and try to learn some titanium skills lol
First time I ended up in your channel ! Definitely subscribe for more awesome 280z content. Your car is very nice! that interior is simply gorgeous. I was thinking of going a Z story exhaust system, but you are making me hesitate. For sure the Z story is nicer, but I could also use the extra money elsewhere in the car. The MSA sound like a good option to finally get rid of that factory exhaust and finally hear my baby.
Welcome and thanks for subscribing! I totally agree, it’s a really great system for such a low price, definitely ask an exhaust shop (or if you can do it yourself) to add an exhaust hanger to the system so that it doesn’t bang around on the ground, but overall I’m really happy and it sounds great :)
I bought the MSA full 2.5in exhaust with a 6-1 header with the same size as the exhaust. exhaust is stainless.
Nice! I need a stainless one!
Oh my god the sound 🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤💯💯💯.. you really made it sound great man
Thank you man I really appreciate it! Later this year I plan to make my own custom exhaust that’s really similar to this one but in stainless. Thanks for watching! :) lots of good Datsun content to come
@@JordanPayneLV i will stay tuned brother 🙌. Love the content
Viduranga 98 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
That interior is gorgeous!
Thank you! I have a video going over my entire interior if you want to check that out! :)
@@JordanPayneLV was just about to ask about the seats - thanks
Sounds fantastic ! Are you running stock injection system or mega squirt ?
Stock injection system and AFM ECU :)
RIGHT OOOOONNNNNN ❤😅😂😂 L
THATS THE WAY I LIKE IT!! THANK GOOOOO JOBB
getting rid of the mechanical fan will change your life. Nice exhaust
What kind of benefits do you get from it?? Thanks!
@@JordanPayneLV The reduced weight allows the engine to rev much easier. It makes the throttle a little snappier and, in my opinion, makes the car sound better because you don't hear the fan spin with the engine. My pickup benefitted substantially from the electric fan because it did not have a clutch for the mechanical fan.
@@Tan997 all good points! I’ll keep it in mind for sure, I kind of always liked the nostalgia of the fan but I can see how it has a ton of inefficiencies
@@JordanPayneLV Don't do it. Been there done that. Nothing beats the stock clutched fan for cooling. Chased over heating issues for years thinking that little little bit of extra horse power was worth it. Even with a 4 core cross flow race radiator numerous electric fans would not cut it. Finally switched back to the stock clutched fan & problem was instantly solved. You want throttle response go with a light weight flywheel & a balanced rotating assembly...........removing the stock cooling fan is meaningless in this regard.
@@Kronaphasia this is good input considering I live in one of the hottest places in the country haha. My car already gets warm at idle in traffic so I’ll need all the cooling that I can get!
Beautiful setup!
Thank you! New exhaust video coming out Wednesday if you wanna check it out 🙌🏻
All good to know as I just recently purchased this exhaust and had some questions concerning it's quality because of the price point but I had seen some videos of how it sounded and loved the sound as well as the look so I thought I'd give it a shot.
Go for it! May just need it secured by a professional shop 👌🏻and a powder coat would help with no rust
@Jordan Payne yeah luckily I work at a shop with a welder but I was definitely planning on painting it too.
Only thing wrong is the color, otherwise awesome
Good thing I’m painting it this year, what color would you choose?
@@JordanPayneLV sorry, shouldn't have said " wrong color", because its beautiful, just not for me. My 78z is green, recently repainted with a Nissan Green. Couldn't imagine anyother color for "me" on this car. .
@@TonyMontana-tm7ul I’ve thought about green, I really like blues but I might want to change it up for a full repaint. The car was originally white
@@JordanPayneLV Datsun made couple very pretty blues one was Sky Blue and Pacific Blue i prefer more of the darker colors.... mine is the Racing Green.
@@TonyMontana-tm7ul are you on Instagram? I’d love to see it!
What kind of fuel rail is that?
It’s from Zcardepot.com, great little
Unit
@@JordanPayneLV I've been looking at that fuel rail for our project z, worth the investment?
South7Bois I think so, there is something to consider though. They give you barb fittings for the individual injectors and then give you AN fittings for the fuel pressure regulator... but they don’t provide any AN lines. I’d say give them a call and ask for additional barb fittings instead or get yourself familiar with how to run AN fittings. Or just go to your local hardware store for an additional barb fitting or two
@@JordanPayneLV awesome thanks!
