Loving the series, I've been on a huge binge of the France lets plays and it's amazing to see the quality of life changes from RTW2 to RTW3. Don't forget about the High priority for RADAR tech! 😊
The BGs fixation with creating "balanced-ish" fights will probably shield you from the full consequences of being "Capital ship lite" for a bit. Not sure whether the AI changes it's behaviour when it senses it's got an edge though? Maybe your Graf Spee is parked in port pretending to be "just resting" a la Queen Elizabeth and Valiant after the Italians crippled them in Alexandria?
Could be. But they were passive when the Graf Spee was in service and passive when it's in dockyard hands. My hunch is that it is not risking them in order to protect its blockade score and stay safe from being blockaded.
@@RvTWargames could be? Assuming their battleships are in the Baltic it would be appropriate if you were being invited to attack the occasional, well escorted, convoy maybe? It would be cool if the game had some interaction between impact of blockades and results of convoy actions! IRL Russia's fairly resistant to the rapid effects of blockades (at least outside of a full scale "Barbarossa" size land war!) as it's pretty much self sufficient tbh.
I believe that is understated. Even minimising Soviet accounts accept that lend lease accounted for 10% of GDP. Which is probably understated. While of course the failure to do something similar in WW1, especially the failure of Gallipoli campaign to open a supply line to Russia left it struggling to supply its armies and was a contributory factor in Russia's collapse.
@@RvTWargames given the game does not model major land wars at all (so Russia's, or indeed anyone's, actual supply needs are always the same whether they are fighting Germany or someone with zero shared land borders like Spain?) then they are not likely to be under "World War - n" levels of supply stress at all... If the 1935 start is taken as attempting to model IRL borders, with a Poland sitting between Russia and Germany then it's unlikely that really large scale land warfare will happen and if Poland is still split between them in some fashion then a mid thirties "Red Army" will likely crush a Versailles limited Wehrmacht (albeit one beginning to expand) in short order? The game of course, hand-waves these issues in pursuit of a more maritime setting but they should be taken on board when they assess blockades imho.
I'm not sure I agree with your decision on the peace negotiations. I think I'd have gone for the medium option. Considering the imminent threat of losing the Baltic States and the difficulty of recapturing it without any capital ship, as you mentioned at the beginning , taking the chance to end the war early might have been wise.
It might have been (code for ... it would have been). Though with the Soviets being so passive (presumably to protect their blockade strength so that they don't get blockaded) the resistance in the Baltic States has been very strong. I don't get a sense that I am at risk of losing it.
Heh, from a battle where torps were flung everywhere, to one where you normally expect them to all be launched--ESPECIALLY since you even flew the black flag! Though I guess since the battle was all of THREE MINUTES(!?!) that no one had a chance to work out launch angles! ;-p
When it comes to ship ranges, I think the dropdown box (short, medium, et.al.) isn't an absolute value, it's relative to the ship. As in, a Medium-ranged DD is still much shorter range than a medium ranged BB, which does have some IRL validity. Which isn't to say that I agree with that implementation, as it just makes it confusing for the player. At the very least, it should be itemized and apparent ;p
This is correct, it also depends on the performance of the engines. Higher speeds require more fuel and smaller engines tend to be lower efficiency. Small DDs (
I didn't realise this. I assumed it was a measure of ability to travel to sea zone: Short = stay in the sea zone you are based in Medium = go to an adjacent sea zone with fatigue if the basing isn't enough Long = go to adjacent sea zone with no fatigue Sort of model.
Talk about getting a sign that you should have taken Greece last episode. I still maintain that the likelihood of it pulling anyone else into the war is minimal at best. With tensions so low and the war already so clearly in your favor taking Greece would have been a free colony once the war ends and resets all tension to zero.
Love the 'Japanese' style night battle with DD's. Real knife fight. Whether it's AI(or Algorithm) random, I've played the Russian Baltic fleet this conservatively. I didn't want to risk my BBs to a German u-boot or torpedo bomber until I could screen my shore bombardment task force to move down the Baltic coast w/ my land forces. Just a thought.
I agree with your restraint in not going after Greece. You have no forces in the area, no colonies nearby, and no allies to help when poking your nose into the Med sets off the Englishers. Also keeping yourself in the Baltic States and Germany allows you to build multiple, 100 plane, unsinkable carriers. This allows the money to go to more Subs and replacing the CL and CA with more modern versions. With radar and electronics on High priority those 16-25 era ships in the fleet will need replacing very quickly with new force multiplying ships. All my opinion, but I try to play in the mind set of does this decision make me better in one/ three/ five years.
Greece is a tempting future option, helping me expand out of Northern Europe. I just wish it offered me Finland instead, which would be much more useful in this war.
What are your thoughts on investing in a couple of "Panzerschiff" like ships for commerce raiding when the budget allows? Their main focus would be range and speed while having enough long-range firepower to ward off enemy Heavy Cruisers. These would be useful for convoy attacks far from home particularly against the UK and France.
Trouble with a 6 x 11in gun CA is that it's very much of its mid-1920s time. It's limited to 12,000 tons, which with long range gives it a paper-thin protection scheme. Against a better all-rounder, 9 x 10in, 6in belt, torpedo defence 3 Roon CA, it would be very fragile.
It's very interesting to see this war continue, although I am wondering about why the game decided to suggest taking Greece again. Is that just bad luck or is there anything that could explain why that event occurred twice in a row?
I tried watching this earlier, and the quality of the video seems really bad. I thought at first it was because it had just been uploaded, but it's been 13 hours now and it's still bad quality.
It's the nighttime effect of the battles, which makes the screen flicker - the game designer uses a lot of single pixel lines to 'darken' the screen, instead of choosing a darker hue. It makes it difficult to record even at 4k.
Thank's for explaining that, I had no idea. I thought there may have been something wrong with your settings, or something because I have never seen any kind of poor quality on your previous videos. I'm watching on a 2k monitor, so it is normally very good, but I guess this must be the first time you have shown a night time battle.
At that range, at night, destroyers will kill cruisers very very quickly with torpedoes. The purpose of cruisers is to have high endurance and to fight similar or smaller sized ships at range, specifically to prevent those smaller ships from getting close enough to launch torpedoes.
Indeed, had it been daylight, the CLs would have certainly taught the Soviet DDs some manners. But in the knife fight of nighttime, they are just a big target waiting to be torpedoed.
Being almost 20 years old hopefully the Russians haven't upgraded their BBs much. Should they ever wander out into the fray it might give you a little advantage, but it would sure still sting if they hit.
I'll say, this game is unfair. I'm 100% sure that the ai cheats especially in night battles. Like, they can see and shoot you, but you can't them, even if you have radar fire control, and they don't
@@RvTWargames Ha, no. It always is bad for me. It's only ever me that eats Torps. I never hit. My dd blow up And there battleships magically dodge it all And again. I'm 100% sure the ai cheats. Otherwise I can't explain being shot at and not able to do anything about it
My top tip is to turn away on first contact and then watch your enemy's torpedo firing arcs and try abs stay away from them. I've crushed whole battle fleets at night. And been somewhat less successful. In this game, radar will arrive soon age that will completely change night battles.

I very much doubt they have a serious rebuild option. I think the Soviets are holding on to them and not risking losing them to avoid being blockaded.
Just to say we already control Norway so a blitzkrieg against Finland would be what we are hoping for 😂
Yes, I've realised that and completely don't remember that happening!
