I punctured... and FIXED it!! [First ever puncture on my KTM 790 adv, rear tire plugged]

- First, but probably not last puncture I have ever experienced on my motorcycle!
Nothing dramatic, could have delivered my bike straight to the workshop and have the tire replaced but decided I might as well try and fix it so I am more prepared in case it happens somewhere I cannot ask for help so easily!

Thank you for sharing this! I bought a tyre repair kit myself when preparing for my recent Norway adventure. I had put on a new set of Pirelli Rally STR, which are quite soft and have a reputation of being puncture prone, so I thought I'd better stop relying on just being lucky all the time. Anyway, I got to Lillehammer, had a great time on the TET, drove up to the peak of Blåhø and literally touched the clouds, and continued up to Lesja before I turned back into Sweden and home again. I got a couple of hundred gigabytes of GoPro material but no puncture, so I am still just as inexperienced with tyre repairs as I was before, but at least now I have the equipment. Plus, I have seen your nice demo of how to use it 👍🙂
Sounds like you had a great trip!😊 Fingers crossed you get away with punctures for a while longer!
Not being a bike rider now a days but a car driver when allowed I find small jobs are better dealt with as an adhoc maintenance alternative with of course a back up by a tire specialist but its a learning curve we should all go through as driver and riders. Cheers Runa.
Great job Runa and a good learning experience ☺️
Great video, I have never (not yet) repair my tyres on my ktm 890 but now I know how to do.//Sweden
Fingers crossed you stay clear of punctures 😄
Very informational. Thanks for taking the time to document this!
Great video. So well presented.
You did a great job ! Now i know when i get a flat on my tubeless tire . Set ur mind you can do anything . Love your humour so funny so cute !!!
I don´t know if you have needed to do it in your past travel in Iceland or Norway or Spain, you are a great mecanical biker, super!!! congratulation! 👏👏👏👏👏👏✌✌✌✌
Good repair, however this only good for tubeless tyres. You have spoked wheels so the spokes must have been sealed inside by tape. My spokes are not sealed so I must use tubes, so to repair I must remove wheel and patch tube. KTM have made it easier for you, nice. Here in Thailand I do not look forward to a puncture, although having said that, in the first few months I did have a puncture, but in a well populated area and as it was near dark a local put my bike in the back of his pickup and took me back to my hotel, and although Sunday next morning located a shop to do the repair for me, every village in Thailand has a motorbike mechanic, it’s great.
Hello Runa! I have watched your videos and they are beautiful! The scenery is incredible. I am happy you are riding a KTM, I love mine. Best!
Thank you Creed !😊
In Canada we call these tire repair strips "bacon strips" The first tool you used is called a reamer...you can not just screw it in, you have to bore the hole with it to make the hole large enough to use the second tool...however, your tires I think might have tubes...and are not specific to that type of hole repair...could be wrong. However, bacon strips are the best thing for tire repair...on tubeless tires...on cars, trucks and bikes. good for you for trying.
As always a great video and an example of why I always run with tubeless tires. I have also fitted a small toolbox on the inside of the left of the pannier rack so I can always carry a puncture repair kit and some basic tools. Ride safe 👍🇬🇧
Thats a great tip, thank you! ☺️
First of all: That is so cool that your spoked wheels use tubeless tires! Second: You probably know this, but for safety, you should probably get the puncture patched, even with the plug.
I am working on making a full travel guide to Norway! I will make sure to share it when it's done. Although I can already say that you should do the west side of Andøya and take the ferry to Senja once you are already there 😄 ATLEAST as beautiful as Lofoten!
My hats off 2 u! Thanks for the video
A magical and beautiful mechanic ;)
So, watching a „how to puncture repair“ video on youtube is not always helpful. But absolutely entertaining😂
Hahaha exactly!😂 we can’t all be experts!
Hi Runa. Great video. To ansver some of your questions. Yes you are supposed to release the air in the tire. When you have manage to get the first tool all the way inn, the trick is to pull the tool out and in some time without any turn movement. Then you will get correct hole size for the plug. Be sure to have enough of the plug on the inside of the tire when you done. 👍
Thank you for advices Bjørn! Next time will be smoother, hopefully it will be a while until I have to do it again 😆🤞
Nice and looking lovely ladie
For me I would let that drill thing in the tire while i prepare for rubber fix in the second tool, its a lot easier to stick that in when the tire still have air in it
In Germany we say "ich ziehe meinen Hut vor Dir!" :-D Perfect!!
We say the same in Norwegian! "Jeg tar av meg hatten" 😄
There it is, so glad you found my missing nail 👏🏻🔥🤩 can you send it to me in the Mail? Thanks
No problem! I will add the bill from the new tire, thanks in advance!🙂🙂🙂
@@OffSheGoesADV If you successfully plugged the tyre, why did you need to replace it? The tread looked ok still. I have repaired a couple of car tyres as well as bike tyres all with lots of life left in them with these stringy plugs and all have been good and lasted the life of the tyre until it was replaced.
@@alexmorgan3435 I know most people do the same, but I just dont want to take any chances. I do not think it is wise to compare motorcycles to cars in this setting - IF something happens when you´re on the highway on your bike you´re f**ked ...and I just don´t want to take that risk 😊
God bless you my friend.
Great job 👍🏽💪🏽👌🏽🤩
Thank you 🤗

Hola, te estoy viendo desde mexico, de que pais eres?
Yep, also Arnold needs sometimes new shoes 😉
But it was a good attempt for the first time.
Thank you! It was defenitly doable, now I know what to do next time 😊
brave mechanic😉😆😆
I actually ended up riding a few days on the plugged tire cause the shop did not have the tire I wanted at that time, and it was all good like you say 😊 And yes, def should have kept some air in the tire to make it easier to insert the plug! Now I know 😁
@@OffSheGoesADV yes but this would be a different experience.. keep it up. 👍👍
Kudo's for KTM for making spoked weels that are tubeless. I thought only BMW had that.
Agreed, its awesome!
Your reamer tool is different than any I've seen. Is it knurled? Either way if there's still some pressure in the tire try to keep as much in as possible so the tire has some force for when you insert the bacon strip. Ie, have your plug ready to go, pull out the reamer, and insert the plug asap. Made a good go of it! Probably just as good as anyone else that's doing it for the first time, including myself 🤣.
It is kind of knurled, it looks like a strange drill. And thats a good advice, to have the strip ready and plug it right after drilling the hole! ... and put the glue on the opposite side from what I did, what a mess 😆 At least I know sort of what to do now!
@@OffSheGoesADV that's interesting. I tried looking up why but came up empty handed. It seems the ones marketed to motorcycles have the corkscrew style and regular tires have the straight reamer. Maybe I've been doing it wrong all these years 🤷😅. Are you on the advrider forums? There's a wealth of information on there. Be careful though it can lead to a lighter wallet very quickly 🤣🤣🤣
Most of those repair kits come with instructions, some do say to actually make the puncture larger. You do this by pushing and pulling in and out the tool. As said spoked wheels have likely a tube, and those need to be done differently.
I did try to make the whole bigger, drilled it over and over, ran it in and out 😊 As you can see from the video I did read the instructions. And no worries, KTM 790 runs tubeless tires.
Nice Video! How tall are you?
Thank you! I am 173 cm 😊
Wow, you are smart for having a tubeless tire kit with you. However, once you patch it the way you did perfectly, then you are good. I have used them on car tires/tyres many times. Once done it is good forever especially the low tire tread on that tire. The tire was flat, so there was no hurry when to put in the plug or file it bigger. flat is flat. 😀But you could have put the compressor on it to inflate it and give the tire back pressure to insert the plug. Put your finger over the hole so it inflates and stiffens. Then your ready for the plug. At least you did it yourself. 😍
I actually did end up riding a few days in the plugged tire, cause the shop did not have a suitable tire to replace it with. And it was fine indeed, I was a bit sceptical but it is good to know it is solid 😊 And yes, def should have kept some air in there/inflated a little bit to make it easier to insert the plug 😂 Now I know!
@@OffSheGoesADV I've never had to do that to my 94, 1500 honda Goldwing. But I have the kit and the other smaller compressor from you know who. It fits in your hand and works great. I think even I might have been confused by the difficulty inserting the plug and seeing the tire collapse for a few minutes. 😉 Thanks for the response.
@@OffSheGoesADV Oops, and you can also, just push the plug with the tool against the hole and block most of the air coming out. When the tire is firm enough for you, then just push. Simple. 😉
♥️♥️♥️
❤❤❤
It think it looking great. I have never done a puncture repair. I have to test it some time when its time to change the tyres.
Probably one could have done the hole little bigger with the drill, then it would have been easier to plug it. On the other hand, as long as it works it works.
I tried really hard getting the hole bigger, running the drill in and out, and in different directions but thats as good as I got it 😂 Worked in the end! Glad I have tried it now so I have an idea what to do if it happens again 😊
@@OffSheGoesADVIt’s really good to know what to expect, I really have to test it some time. What tyres do you have, what’s your opinion about them in genera? Did you change to the same type or did you choose another tyre this time?
@@JoonesAdventuresMC this year I have been running the Michelin Anakee Adventure tires and loved them! I have rode close to 10 000km on the tires in this video and they still had a lot left on them. I will try something new now though, @allsupermoto ordered some Continental TKC 70 and I am looking forward to try them.
@@OffSheGoesADV That sounds good 👍 I have Anakee III on my bike and they’re starting to square of at just under 10000km a lot of thread left though (I know I ride ass a kitten 🐱 or was it chicken 🐥). I have to change tyres for next season and looking for something that’s slightly better for gravel road but not necessary mud, I think at least. I will probably never ride off-road but most likely gravel road. It would be interesting hear your opinion about TKC 70 It looks like an interesting tyre.
@@JoonesAdventuresMC Hahah I do still have quite a few strips left on mine so you are not alone 😂 Perhaps I can make a short review of the TKC 70 by the end of the season!
Tubeless repair seems a lot more simple than tubes.
Absolutely! I now have tubes and I am dreading my first puncture
Красотка! Такая красивая...
wow.. 👍🏾👍🏾
Nice job :D Rett innstilling :D
Det går om man vil, som regel 😁
@@OffSheGoesADV Sant så sant :)
when does the next episode comes out ? :P
Hopefully soon this weekend 😀 life has been very busy last two weeks and now I am leaving for offshore job.
@@OffSheGoesADV aa nice :) life can be that somethimes ^^ 2week on 4weeks off? :P
@@LasseCLand I have no set work schedules yet I just go out usually in short notice 😊 this time for about 10 days I believe
@@OffSheGoesADV aha, getting litle of varied work time:P
is this a tubeless tire? :P normaly with this kind of rims you have tiers with tubes, then you cant do it like that :P
mabye for a some km, but not for a longer period of time :P
Of course I would not do this if there was a tube in it 😊
@@OffSheGoesADV haha good :P
Lol yea it's a headache when a nail gets into tire spoils the day
It sure does 😂 But shit happens!
@@OffSheGoesADV love your adventurous ride 👍
You different face 🤯 but same cool 👍
Those rims don't look like they are tubless because of the spokes down the middle, unless it has been converted to tubeless with conversion kit. Please clarify.
The KTM adventure bikes all have tubeless tires 😊 I am sure a quick google can confirm this for you
KTM converts a standard wheel right from the factory
Hello where are you going today my beautiful friend
Hello, Are You Runa? You are very Beautiful. I think You did some mistakes while repairing the Puncture. When You remove the knell, immediately have to insert the tool to make the hole bigger. Don't remove that tool till You are ready with the patch. You have to remove it straight. Sufficient tire pressure should be there otherwise You cannot insert the patch. You could not insert the patch properly because there was very little tire pressure. Thanks.
Hey there! Thanks for watching my video. You are totally right, I figured it out in the aftermath haha, the plug stayed in nicely though, ended up doing about 600km on it before replacing the tire. Now I know what to do for next time!
@@OffSheGoesADV Wow, Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate that. Love watching Your Ride Videos. Norway is really Beautiful.

You're obviously a bit of a novice with motorcycles. I can see that by the way you read the instructions before doing the job. That's simply not how these things should be done!
Oh, so you were just born with all the knowledge you need?😊 Gotta learn one way or the other!
@@OffSheGoesADV Sorry, I think you misunderstand me. I was simply poking fun at those of us who refuse to rtfm until either the job is complete, which then shows us a much simpler way, or we struggle for hours on end and, when all else has failed, we read the instructions. I noticed you looked at the instructions before starting.
I'm sorry! I got that wrong, it's hard to catch sarcasm from text sometimes. Now that I read it again it gave me a good laugh!
