Yeah, it's me the Battle Arts guy or whatever. I can give an explanation.
Recruit's crouch (and all crouches that go through the recruit path) will lock you in place, this is to balance out the generous pool of HP you are given as a recruit. Later battle styles will allow you to benefit a bit from the stationary crouch. Notably as Dragoons gain a one time massive increase to jump height when crouching for 0.5s which allows for their aerial sky dive attacks.
The innate skill for Recruit is Iron Fortress, Basically the innate is intended to give a flat damage reduction, and when that damage after reduction is zero it will treat the attack being blocked like a omni guard similar to that of perfect bulwark. The damage reduction is passive after innate activation and lasts for said duration.
To clarify drops:
Squire is a 5% drop from Zombies unaffected by looting.
Recruit is a 5% drop from Skeletons unaffected by looting.
