As a Canadian around Mei's age myself, for as baffling as this sounds the energy in this is PERFECT! I know Canada always comes off as pretty much the calmer and more polite America, but the eccentricity here is weirdly accurate to how most of the generation is like, and from my experience most Canadian moms tend to be that type of casual Karen so the mother's personality is spot on. I say we have a winner, March can't come soon enough!
My friends always talked about the eccentricity! Would you mind elaborating a bit more if you don’t mind? I’ve always wanted to ask but I was afraid I’ll look dumb if it’s ‘obvious’ to other people d:

Mei's mom was once a teenager too, she went through the same struggle. Although I understand Mei's viewpoint but somehow I empathize with her mother more. Some people make it seem like their mom is the villain who needs to be defeated instead of healed. Our parents are humans too, with their own strengths and flaws.
god i'm so glad that Mei is unapologetically herself. so many tween dramas focus on the MC trying to be someone they're not and then suffering the consequences. it's truly a breath of fresh air, plus Mei is super funny :D
You say that but she says "My whole life I've been perfect little Mei Mei" but we can see that even before the curse she was not restricted and could be herself. So in this trailer alone I can see that they already forgot what they had her be like at the start of the film. But from what was said and gathered this is just a "I'm now a teen so I must rebel" story.
Finally, a movie where the nerdy kids don't spend the entire movie trying to become cool/popular. Seriously, I’m honestly digging this group dynamic: how fresh is it to see the nerdy kids who are comfortable being themselves??
Reminds me of Mabel Pines, Candy, and Grenda from Gravity Falls. They are comfortable geeking out in their own little group and are crazy for boy bands. The NSYNC song in this trailer gives that same vibe. Pure fun!

not only do i appreciate the inclusion of the early 2000s bops immensely but i also think the early 2000s is such a great setting for this kind of story of coming into your own as a young adolescent. teen-centric media at this time was really about existing as something of a subject of the behemoth that is the stifling and rigidly defined culture of teens, coming into your own with that as the backdrop, before 2010s works started to go beyond that particular scope. so it feels so fitting to have a story where the conflict and subsequent growth of our protagonist is engendered by that culture be set in this time. plus im sure domee shi is drawing from her own experiences which is another thing i love Pixar directors doing from luca to this! she’s crafted a really thoughtful story and im excited to see how this turns out :^)

I really like that Priya is clearly an active member of the friend group even though the expression she has most of the time could be interpreted as her preferring not be. I mean she’s vibing with the beat, marching with a sign, bustin some moves, swooning over the boy band, saying the tail’s cool, all with that deadpan face. I like it!
I knew this one girl in school called Priya who was a right snob, and I remember she once said something about her name meaning "princess" in another language. I don't know if that's true or not, but I still cringe when I think of that. The fact that there is a character in this movie called Priya who acts totally different to the one I knew gives me a new appreciation for the name, as I often associate names with people I know have those names along with their behaviour, good or bad. So, I naturally associated the name Priya with a brat who wanted to grow up too fast and was way too invested in whatever was the trend. Glad I can see the name under a better light now.

Fun Fact: Red Pandas are not pandas and are not related to bears. They are more closely related to raccoons and weasels. Another name for them is Fire Fox.
Actually not even that! They seem like it but they're literally it's own little thing, they haven't actually been able to get traced back to any other kind of animal family. I dunno it's kind of fastinating :)
@@kvalentine3283 they already know this fact, they named it after the red panda, and had a live feed of a Red Panda exhibit on the main page when you’d start up the browser
Yeah, the only reason they have the name 'panda' at all is because 'panda' roughly translates to 'eater of bamboo', and the red panda and panda bear both subsist mostly on bamboo.
Okay so I’m surprised that they didn’t follow the typical formula of hiding the secret “powers” from friends and family as well as being embarrassed of her new form. Her embracing her special self feels refreshing. It all seems to be a metaphor about growing up into a teenager and I like the positive spin on it. Oh also her being an overachiever and not embarrassed or mocked for it.
Yeah pretty convinced it's a movie-worthy spin on puberty. The "armpit sniffing" kinda gave it away. She might just be a little young, hence why her friends and family were so surprised yet supportive.
Yep, pretty obviously, "Turning Red" is about periods and puberty. Just personified as turning into a red panda. This movie is gonna be amazing for subconsciously teaching young girls how to handle growing up, and all the little 'surprises' that come with it.
To me it just seems like it's just pushing away from one old trope for the new modern trope, this just screams your basic rebel formula, just from this one trailer it's easy to see where it's heading, I mean the main character said it themselves."I've always been perfect little MeiMei(sorry if I misspelled it)" her emotional state will be the key, and I'd put money on that during the whole movie her parents will attempt to show her the old cultured way to suppress or control her "panda form" and she'll reject saying that it's outdated or something to that effect, ultimately she'll be in the right somehow and her parents will be like "we should have listen to you" or something, this movie and that new Hispanic one just screams culture pandering to me, it feels forced, hopefully I'm wrong and we get another hit like "Coco" but looking at disneys record so far as of 2020 I'm not convinced, Disney doesn't innovate any more, they just follow the trends
@@WhatsDaScoops ofc it's not gonna be a revolutionary movie, but with a positive, wholesome movie about embracing change and being yourself I'll be just fine :) I can't say I'm excited for "Encanto" tho, since it looks pretty bland both in story and especially in character design.

I just realized something. In the teaser trailer Mei seemed like a quiet reserved person. Now I understand this because it shows that she was a loud eccentric person, but the red panda thing forced her to be more reserved. Huh.
nah i just think that was the day (after) she first turned into a giant red panda. it explains why she was wearing a hat, so no one would ask any questions about her new hair color. so Mei Mei was probably just quiet because she was trying to not draw any attention and feel any strong emotions that would turn her into the panda. but i don't think the moral will be that "if you're too loud, you should change your personality" or "being loud is just a phase" edit: also 1:52 is probably the day (after) she first turned into the panda too. look at how she's trying to "push the panda back in" while her friends aren't looking.

This one, however, makes her seem like this popular, well accomplished, maybe even perfect social butterfly who wants to do something out of the norm. I’ll wait until the movie comes out before I decide which suits her and the movie better, but right now, I’m kind of liking the feeling the second option more, could make the story a bit more interesting… Also, as a kid who grew up in the nineties, I’m more than over the moon that the first trailer had a song by the Backstreet Boys and this one has N’SYNC!

Ah yes the Canadian mom personality can’t agree more
My biggest dream is to be able to go to Canada, many say that it is a great country. 😞

Finally someone said it agreed
god i'm so glad that Mei is unapologetically herself. so many tween dramas focus on the MC trying to be someone they're not and then suffering the consequences. it's truly a breath of fresh air, plus Mei is super funny :D
It really isn't that fresh.
@@SirBlackReeds ur not fresh
You’re breathtaking!
I can name at least 5 other movies where the main character is like "I'm me, deal with it"
You say that but she says "My whole life I've been perfect little Mei Mei" but we can see that even before the curse she was not restricted and could be herself.
Pure fun!

The fact that there is a character in this movie called Priya who acts totally different to the one I knew gives me a new appreciation for the name, as I often associate names with people I know have those names along with their behaviour, good or bad.

This seems really childish compared to their older movies.
@@musabs5848 it's just a trailer

@@lag00n54 idk, just the art-style, everyone dancing, the expressions, it seems like such a cliche concept that we’ve seen before. Though I think people would probably enjoy this compared to like the old classics nowadays. It seems more ‘trendy’.

@EL AUTENTICO and you believe you're a real man? That's funny.
Let's be honest. we all want supportive friends like Mei's.
*And that's a fact!*
That's so true
Is true... 😞
good Turning Red you ☺😇😏
HOW IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT HOW THE ANIMATION IS SO GOOD??? IT LOOKS AMAZING I CANT WAIT FOR THIS TO COME OUT OH MY GOD.
It *is* pixar LOL
i find it way similar to captain underpants for some reason (with its weird 2d style and comedy)
Ikr
For me mei mei's character is like animation of Arale from anime Dr. Senbe
Im just waiting for the last scene
The reason why Mei keeps raising her arms when she gets scared is because it's a reference to Red Pandas using this technique to make themselves look larger to defend themselves against predators
Oh so it seems you have a mind 😏
🥺🥺🥺🥺
@@curiositystuff1520 they never said they didnt lol
@@iiangelz9197 ok kid ikr
Which to the non official predator the homo sapien we just find it cute as hell
I just realized something. In the teaser trailer Mei seemed like a quiet reserved person. Now I understand this because it shows that she was a loud eccentric person, but the red panda thing forced her to be more reserved. Huh.
nah i just think that was the day (after) she first turned into a giant red panda. it explains why she was wearing a hat, so no one would ask any questions about her new hair color. so Mei Mei was probably just quiet because she was trying to not draw any attention and feel any strong emotions that would turn her into the panda. but i don't think the moral will be that "if you're too loud, you should change your personality" or "being loud is just a phase"
edit: also 1:52 is probably the day (after) she first turned into the panda too. look at how she's trying to "push the panda back in" while her friends aren't looking.
I love this movie so much :D
I honestly like how the black/brown girl here is the emo calm character. I feel like it's rare for characters like her to be given such a unique personality, they're either bubbly or sassy.
No, actually it’s a new sterotype. Same trope in Dear Evan Hansen, and basically all new cartoons
THIS
And she’s a furry
@@Dr.LongMonkey I haven't seen any other chatacters with this trope, can you give examples?
@@Dr.LongMonkey if you are referring to Alana, I wouldn’t consider her the emo calm character at all. If anything, she fits more into the bubbly personality that commenter mentioned. She just has a deep backstory.
I really love this new style that Pixar’s taking on. It started with Luca and now this, and I just really love it. It’s so fun!
But its the exact same style as adventure time, gravity falls, steven universe, star, bare bears, etc. It's the same bland & cliche style.
@@MisterHeroman you literally replied with the same thing in like,,,, a lot of comments. Don't you have something else to say?
@@MisterHeroman Well I'm confused because all of those cartoons have completely different styles 🤷

Loving the expressions and fluidity of the characters. Definitely seems like a really nice blend of old anime Dr. Slump style and almost Wallace and Gromit expressiveness.
It gives me Studio Ghibli and early Dragon Ball vibes
Yeah, thought the same thing. Mei is like Arale character
Now that you mention it, Mei does look and act a lot like Arale lol

One things for sure, the animation looks amazing. Pixar finds a way to make each movie look distinct and gorgeous in its own way.
I think that Mei's gonna be one of those characters that people find annoying at first, but with a little development, she becomes a cool and lovable character. I love when movies do that.
Me too, feels like the kinda movie where, on rewatch, you’re probably gonna skip the first ten minutes and just play the rest on repeat.

I absolutely love that it’s a red panda. They put their little paws above their head when they feel threatened😂
This is was one of the best pixar movies .i dont know why it got so much hate.i dont find it cringey rather more realistic and was different from the classic pixar movies
I find it interesting because the teaser trailer and this one give me completely different ideas on what kind of character Mei is going to be! The former gave me the impression of this brainy and unpopular bookworm who is good at school but still fears doing poorly and being embarrassed in front of others! This one, however, makes her seem like this popular, well accomplished, maybe even perfect social butterfly who wants to do something out of the norm. I’ll wait until the movie comes out before I decide which suits her and the movie better, but right now, I’m kind of liking the feeling the second option more, could make the story a bit more interesting…
Also, as a kid who grew up in the nineties, I’m more than over the moon that the first trailer had a song by the Backstreet Boys and this one has N’SYNC!
I'm liking this chibi look on. I wish this got a theatrical release, even a simultaneous one. Seeing it on a big screen would be awesome. It looks so thoughtfully and beautifully designed.
