    Thanks Brian, I'll bear this in mind if any of my Windows PCs have problems with any of the latest updates. I'm sure my Linux PCs will be fine - owning a few Linux PCs (and updating them) reveals what a mess the Windows update system is.
    All of these episodes serve as useful reminders that we must all take responsibility for keeping precious user data backed up. I like to use external USB hard drives for this and prefer to run backups from a terminal session. On Linux I use rsync and on Windows I use xcopy.

    Cheers Brian, great to have a heads up about this. I set my friends and family members PC's up to update at least two weeks after MS release the updates for this exact reason. I've made a camtasia video showing them how to hide the update because they're all non tech savvy at all. Plus saved me a headache because without this info I'd have been inundated with WTF messages, even though I packed in being the PC guy many moons ago.

    Windows really needs to double check their work and make sure their updates don't crash or need resizing that shouldn't be something that a customer has to do.

    What the Windows world really needs is for someone to write a tool that allows you to refuse specific updates, permanently. You know, like the way Windows USED to be, before Microsoft decided that your system belongs to them and they can do anything they want with it.

      If windows works just fine after a clean installation,you don't need any update because we don't even know what's being installed on the pc or much more importantly,what is being downloaded from it,like all logs,thumbnails and all activities on the pc.I found an hp pc 2 years ago on the street with auto update enabled on it and in add remove table,there was a1000 security update which of course made the pc very slow.Took me a month to delete them all.

    The show hide tool also works on Windows 11. It may give you a deprication notice; just ignore it.
    It you use Group Policy to block driver updates, they will appear in the tool as hidden updates.

    Hello, I from Eastern Europe, sorry for my poor English.
    Thank you very much, it very important and interesting theme. I heard what problems with updates happens, and nobody know what to do next. But now, you show the way to avoid danger for PC.
    I not like how Microsoft make update system in Windows 10. To avoid mistakes I turn off “fast startup” option, because Microsoft recommend to turn it off before installing updates. But I keep it “off” because it impossible to control and knew moment when Windows 10 download and install update, it not give notice about it, and it impossible to “off”(Fast Startup) in right moment.
    Thank you very much! 🙂👍

    I used a 3rd-party tool to disable updates completely about a month ago, as I had a feeling M$ would start "accidentally" breaking W10 to get more users onto W11. I rarely doubt they are going to change W10 to be significantly better than 22H2, even after the continued "paid updates" knee bending by M$
    It seems that this may be the beginning of that pattern, but hopefully not. I would keep an eye out, fellow W10 users...

    If you didn't hide the updates that break your PC, do they cause any blue screen of deaths? This is quite an educational video. Windows 7 had this hidden updates feature (you can actually hide particular updates, for example: to uninstall telemetry updates that Microsoft introduced to snoop on you before upgrading to Windows 10). They have removed that feature for newer operating systems.

    What if you installed an update and it causes issues? I am not getting it. Does this tool reverse the update as well or do I need to keep making the system restore point before each such update? Or should the Windows do such restore point itself before updating by default? My brain understands you use this tool just to quarantine an update you know or suspect to have issue. How do I know when it was fixed so I can go ahead? Btw, I am an average user but after battling with other PC issues and being a little familiar with running various commands, following their advice to increase the recovery partition went smoothly in my case. Just I still ended up reinstalling the whole pc and any new updates went well, too. I just had a couple instances when the CPU went crazy afternew installation, but after a brief investigation what the pesky process was, it just needed to update an audio driver I found on the manufaccurer's website. Done.

      I think they really need to fix that, at this rate it sounds like a recovery partition is going to be over a GB. It said at least 250 it didn't say additional 250mb, so I am confused.
      With these updates you would think they would automatically adjust it or fit within and not make someone manually adjust their partition table which can lead into issues. Or at the very least be more clearer on their details.

    That diagcab tool is deprecated, and won't work from 2025 on, sadly.

    The default option to pause updates is for 7 days, but the user can choose that option in seven-day increments-for approximately 30 days. The downside is it pauses ALL of the updates. I wish Microsoft built the Hide Updates Tool into the OS. I find the all or nothing approach to be rather annoying.

    The fact you need to resize it is 100% ridiculous. There should never be an alternative to the problem. They should fix it on their end by doing the update in parts or cancelling it completely. The fact they released an update larger than the recovery partition just shows how stupid they are on not remembering the default partition size they set for Windows 10. I am tired of their incompetence of low-quality updates. I am glad they will stop updating Windows 10 soon. Sorry but not sorry I rather have an insecure OS than a crap tastic update that may brick my OS.

    I defer Windows 10 Pro updates by using local Group Policy:
    (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business > Select when Preview builds and Feature Updates are received or Select when Quality Updates are received)
    I defer Windows 10 Home updates by using Registry Edit:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "DeferFeatureUpdates"=dword:00000001
    "BranchReadinessLevel"=dword:00000010
    "DeferFeatureUpdatesPeriodInDays"=dword:0000002d

    I know how to do it! Why the hell do I have to do it. I worked on Microsoft and Linux software systems for years. Why can't they fix the damn software. Re-mind's me of computer games who fixes them the modding community does. It only affects my gaming rig in the sense that it doesn't update. But I don't use it for anything else it's custom built just a play computer games. That's why I have spent fortunes on video cards over the years. I run everything else on Apple or Linux.
