      @@deborahgonzalezknight168 How is it going? I bought a guitar in 2005 (Rosie) and hit a brick wall. Got to barre F and quit. Picked it back up 16 years later for that same guitar to punish me and I screwed my thumb joints up so much I had to quit for six months as the 24x7 pain I had almost required surgery. Back at it again for about a month taking it slowly. I still feel the twinges in the thumb joints but making a lot of progress as I purchased two guitars. The first one I was using when I had to quit (damage had already been done) was a Bullet Mustang for my extremely small hands (my longest finger is not much longer than a standard AA battery). After I came back I just did not want an electric as having to get the amp, drag it out, jack in, the practise then unplug, stash the amp I said enough and for a birthday gift I grabbed an Alt30 electro-acoustic. Love it as the neck is thin for what I need, but the 25.5in scale kills me (especially for the C-Chord). The exercises do help for sure.

    I am 53. Just purchased my first guitar 3 weeks ago. Honestly, I haven't found something so entertaining and frustrating at the same time. Maybe ever. I did this exercise and literally couldn't move my ring finger at all. After a week, it hasn't gotten easy, but I can do it pretty well. Awesome exercise! Watching a new connection form between my brain and finger was the coolest thing!!!

    I am 59 yo and have been trying to learn for several years. I have had 3 teachers over 6-7 years, and paid a lot of $, but none of them taught me the exercises and techniques Lauren taught in the first video and this one.
    I have never been able to make the chord changes quickly or smoothly enough to actually play any songs. So, I paused my learning many times because I did not progress.
    I don't remember how I found Lauren's first video, about a week ago, but these two lessons are by far the most important I have ever had. I am finally making progress. These fundamental exercises are challenging and enjoyable.
    Maybe I can actually learn to play and not keep stopping and starting 😊
    Thank you Lauren. You are the first, and only teacher, including dozens of popular online teachers, to slow down, break it down, identify the most difficult challenges and barriers, then teach in a clear way that I can actually follow. Thank you.

    I'm another older beginner, 67, started at Christmas (Guitar, an SX Strat, was a Christmas gift) I now have 2 guitars (an Epiphone Les Paul Studio as well). I dip in and out of your videos, which are always very useful, as well as others. I did this exercise every day for a few months, and whilst you don't notice much difference day to day, over the 2 months though the dexterity improved a lot. My index finger has been broken so only gets used for a couple of chords so the middle 2 and the pinky do most of the work. 7 months in and I think I'm maybe ahead of where I thought I might be at this stage. This exercise definitely helped. Recently learned the riff from La Bamba and can really knock that out now which needs a bit of finger speed. Keep up the great work Lauren.👍

      @@LaurenBateman well I can only really play the riff. I watched someone doing a lesson on it (Justin Sandercoe aka JustinGuitar) there was a technique in it that confused me a bit where you change chord a beat early, so on the 4 and not the 1, I'm sure you understand that way better than me 😉

    Thanks for this set of wonderful tips. I am doing these exercises each day. One question do you have any thoughts about thumb movement/stability/positioning during chord changes? I am trying keep my thumb under control but it difficult.

    • @LaurenBateman
      @LaurenBateman  3 роки тому +2

      Depends on the chord honestly. I wrap it over the top something to mute strings and sometimes it's on the back of the guitar. Particularly for barre chords and power chords.
