A favorite indeed. His voice is wonderful. Almost wish I was an insomniac.

The Pastorale is one of my favourite symphonies and Karajan's version is the best I have listened to so far.

I just want to say - I share your sentiment and went to a concert recently for this symphony. It was very similar to Karajan's interpretation and I was in tears. Beautiful.

Karajan´s interpretations were typical of this man. No surprise, much to fast. Just a Porsche driver. Enjoy a good alternative:
    Furtwängler it´s a good alternative!!!!

Maybe it's 'cause this was the first rendition I heard of the piece (I was given the box set of LPs of all 9 symphonies from this 1960s recording session when I was what, 6, maybe 7 years old :) ) , but I've always loved the lively pace and the very un-Karajan-like sense of joy and enthusiasm. The orchestra's magnificent as it should be, and the conductor hasn't turned into the sort of soul-less technocratic automaton we all came to know and loathe toward the end of his career.
And it makes GREAT driving music for careering across a snow-covered landscape of backwoods country roads at Christmastime :D

Ever been driving a Porsche ? Did you get it by car to movement 5 ? Done marvelously by Karajan ? And: the silken quality of the violins of the Berliner. Then: the total integration of the sound. The unmistakable joy here mixed with serenity. Karajan really understood Beethoven. The rest is whining. Out of envy ? Making you think that you know better than the maestro. Not possessing a Porsche yourself.

@@sj-237 I've heard two live performances of the 6th (which, I must concede, is probably my single most favorite piece of "serious" music), one by our local chamber orchestra, and one by the Academy of St. Martin-in-The-Fields. Both very closely approximated the dynamics and pacing of that early 60s Berlin recording. So apparently I'm not the only one who thought that was a pretty good interpretation of the symphony. :D (And I was amused by the two trombonists sitting there, darned near immobile, for the whole first three movements, before finally being called upon during the storm :D )
