Mutant Chronicles seems so very similar to early 40k ... because it was largely created and illustrated initially by then-ex-GW employees, or artists who worked with GW for a time but stopped around that point such as Paolo Parente. The story as I heard it was that the people involved were looking to maintain the "Dark and Gritty" atmosphere to 40k, but felt that GW at the time was not (as it was moving into the more colourful and bright 2nd edition era), so they built Mutant Chronicles to be a near-40k type universe.
"Mutant Chronicles was developed by the Swedish company Target Games as an independent spinoff to their Mutant RPG series, specifically Mutant RYMD released the year before. Unlike previous Swedish role-playing games, Mutant Chronics was released in English, and focused on reaching an international audience."
@@Wortiger Yep, that is correct. As far as I can tell, Target Games was their own thing, but when they wanted a science fiction game, they hired a bunch of people who had recently been doing 40k stuff. Mutant Chronicles bears very little resemblance to the Mutant property, despite being meant as a spinoff game (I can't remember if prequel or sequel).
Heroquest is so nostalgic for me, after I found a second hand copy I played through with my family and the game rules... are definitely dated. Had a blast though and I'm slowly painting through the minis as palette cleansers.
My form tutor at school had siege of the citadel! He would bring it out around once a month at my school’s Warhammer club (that he ran). We loved playing that game. I’ll never forget the first time we had to deal with the Ezoghoul. It was amazing when it ended up on the room population card (which was random). I’m pretty sure it ended up being a TPK. This was around 2005.
Painting Heroquest minis in bright colours similar to He-Man would be pretty cool, I think. MotU is pretty much like a gateway to Sword & Sorcery for kids, the same way as Heroquest is.
Mutant Chronicles > 40k Paul Bonner who did a lot of the Iconic artwork also did some very early 40k art. Some great Ork and Eldar stuff. Also, we don't talk about the Movie.
Mutant and the spinoffs were hugely popular in Sweden and I think Mutant Chronicles was the company's first attempt at an international audience. Target Games also made Drakar och demoner which was and is the most popular Swedish-language RPG and got an English edition recently. I think it's some very important context to know that yes especially Warzone and Chronopia (their miniature wargames) look a lot like Warhammer knockoffs they were made specifically for the Swedish market as a Swedish-language alternative with their own miniatures. The Mutant RPG is still fairly popular and the Swedish-language edition of Talisman is still getting editions too, but unfortunately Target Games is no more.
I am always excited when I see the OG HeroQuest show up on my favorite hobby channels. And, invariably, I end up watching the “Why HeroQuest is so great” video at least twice.
One thing worth noting about the original Hero Quest is that it was really good value for money, you got an insane amount of mini's and scenery in the box and it was only about £20-£22 back when it released here in the UK.
I owned Heroquest as a teenager. I'm glad to have replaced my vintage set and have bought the new one. I also played Warzone, the miniatures game based on the Mutant Cronicles back in the 90s while in college. I used a bunch of the plastic dark legion figures from the Siege of the Citadel box set for my Dark Legion army based around the Apostle Algeroth. Some days, I really wish I hadn't sold all of my Warzone stuff. Oh, well. Cool to see some old friends.
I'm pretty fond of the new version of Hero Quest. They added female counterparts to several of the classes, and after getting several of the classic expansions out, they're not releasing new class boxes, and have released two or three brand new expansions with more planned. Probably my favorite detail is everyone can actually do the adventuring if they want to since AH released an app to take the part of the GM (again, just if ya want). I'm wondering if the new content they're making for Hero Quest now is compatible with the old version.
Cool to see these. I remember owning a similar style dungeon crawling RPGlite board game but it came with an immense number of cardboard standies for enemies and metal minis for the heroes. I wish I could remember what it was called
Oh man, Pogs are one of those things from my childhood that I dont know when we stopped having them, where they went, etc. I have my Yugioh Cards, my Pokemon Cards, etc all in an attic somewhere. Pogs were so cool.
A small clarification about the Mutant chronicles section: A lot of pictures of other Mutant stuff is shown here, but those are related to Mutant Chronicles in the loosest of sense. Mutant Chronicles was keeping the Mutant name more or lest just for the sake of name recognition, with the settings being completely different, and later on they would also be treated as different licenses. That's why Modiphius could release a Mutant Chronicles RPG using their 2D20 system at the same time as Free League was selling their Mutant: Year Zero game. There is a third Mutant line, Mutant 2089 which is a pure cyberpunk RPG, but that line has not seen any releases since the original RPG went out of print. Siege of the Citadel is an interesting take on the dungeon delving genre. It has a system for using a rotating "GM", so where in HeroQuest one person takes on the GM role for the entire duration, Siege of the Citadel expects you to change GM with every mission during its campaign.
I have been dying to see someone paint up the Mutant Chronicles miniatures, Heroquest has been done a million times but I haven't seen anyone paint Mutant Chronicles.
I think it's funny that you were like "i think I'd rather have the original" when it's like, yeah, so would everyone. An intact original hero quest is worth like a thousand bucks! But yeah, should definitely paint it like he-man, the chaos sorcerer is a dead ringer for skeletor already.
Please, go for the He-Man style. I just bought my first MotU battleground box with the best character of the whole franchise (Stinkor, obviously) and I would love to see people tackling this style and, honestly, with your love for bright color schemes and almost fluorescent tones, I feel like you would be the perfect choice to tackle this "challenge".
I heard of Mutant Chronicles before I heard of Warhammer 40k and I find the universe to be fascinating. Especially what happened to earth after humanity abandoned the planet. Good stuff.
Oh man I thought that was going to be Siege of the Citadel from the red border on the thumbnail. I LOVE that game. I have the original from '93 pictured here, I have the 2nd edition re-imagining from Mophidius from a few years ago. I don't have the original sequels "Blood Berets" or "Fury of the Clansman" but they're on my list to pick up if I find them for a reasonable price.
That miniature is a Burger King kids meal toy from the 90s. It's from the cartoon Gargoyles. I had that toy, loved it, and I knew what it was immediately. It's actually a great mini to use for fantasy gaming. I wonder how it would look painted up nicely. Maybe even modified as well.
I was really young so I used to chew on the gargoyle. It was surprisingly chewy and not bad tasting. Maybe that's why I am the way I am: formative years microplastic-maxxing.
Also I would love to see maybe a recreation of the terrain in Mutant Chronicles. It's such a neat aesthetic of like....alien goop over a cyber fortress with these pinhead looking statues.
Please paint the Mutant Chronicles! I have that game and was a fan of Warzone/Mutant Chronicles for most of the nineties (I even had a warzone themed cake for my 16th birthday!) I recently grabbed some resin reprints of the old Warzone models. I love them and would be delighted to see your take on those corporate squads and the Dark Legion enemies (especially the Ezoghoul, the big bone-white one with the twisty pelvis)
For Hero Quest couldn't agree more. I would have liked to see upgraded rules or missions - because the original is very retro and cool but VERY different to modern game design sensibilities. Im glad they reprinted it but if I were to buy it again I'd just go on ebay or piece it together from several listings. Retro warhammer or He-man style art gets my vote!!! Lean into the nostalgia and silliness.
I get what you say about Mutant Chronicles but I wonder if that vibe comes from the technology of the day. That being that the moulds were a little less in depth with their casting and figures were sort of 3d flats if you will. For a game it might have been too expensive to produce more dynamic poses.
I'd say for Hero Quest go with maybe some kinda oldschool warhammer mixed with Original He-Man Cartoon style. and then if you also end up painting Mutant Chronicles that gets vaporwaved.
Mutant Chronicles is a Large hole to go do. The short of it Diesel Punk genre, near future where Mega Corporations are waring over resources in our current solar system. Demons, mutants and magic come for another dimension, and their influence infects/corrupts hi-technology devices. So generally, simpler technology has to used to to avoid it being corrupted. Has seen many reboots, started as RPG, became miniatures game, had a couple board games, had two CCGs, had Collectable minis, went through multiple iterations of Miniatures games, had 2 more versions of RPG, currently in post Kickstarter production stage, not at fulfillment yet of skirmish level miniatures game. As other have mentioned Paul Bonner has done a lot of artwork for the IP over the years.
I had this games! (The mutant Chronicles) then we buy the actual Roleplaying games, and use the miniature from siege for it! Deathlockdrum for the win!
I saw those not-space-marines and immediately knew that I'd like to see them painted up in a style reminiscent of @SnipeandWib's Fight Weapon Future Year artwork, if you're looking for suggestions.
I think Avalon Hill was damned if they did and damned if they didn't change the rules on the HeroQuest remake. The point of keeping the game in its original state was precisely because you could only get copies on ebay for very expensive prices and they wanted to honor the legacy before they went and did their own thing. The new expansions is where they're branching out and where the game is getting really interesting. The newest taking place in the jungle should be its best yet.
This better be Hero Quest or im kicking off. Edit: phew! I had this as a kid around 91, held onto it for ages but none of my friends got it. Recently found an original in a Pokémon card shop in the back on top of a shelf, eye watering price, absolutely worth it.
Woow Mutant Chronicles seems SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK, and that gargoyle is from the Tv Show gargoyles immedietly recognized it, so cool. BTW Does anybody know where the Bonus Ratboi comes from? they're so cool!
You should definitely do more mutant chronicles.. but check out mutant zone war from free league.. mutant chronicles was originally developed from the ruleset of mutant ( chaosium like rules) And the boardgame is fun, really fun.. would love to see some synthwave on those miniatures..
THE ONLY WAY TO EXPAND HERO QUEST IS WITH MORE HERO QUEST.
Look at the *_MUSCULARITY_*
Oh no! Mormons! *places down plastic heroquest door*
Strictly for beginners.
The Best Thing About Hero Quest is More Hero Quest.
The best thing about Hero Quest is the inside of the box! :D
That Mutant Chronicles is screaming for a synthwave paint up. They just need some sunglasses.

@@mmacmartin It is a bit closer when you compare it to Mutant Rymd which was the precursor.
I tend to think of Mutant Chronicles as a blend of WH40K and Cyberpunk 2020, with a heavy seasoning of Batmans Gotham City. 😂
Heroquest is so nostalgic for me, after I found a second hand copy I played through with my family and the game rules... are definitely dated.
Had a blast though and I'm slowly painting through the minis as palette cleansers.
I got some cool pogs. Dana Pogs. Remember Dana? She’s back! In Pog form.
I love Siege of the Citadel and Mutant Chronicles! And Pogs were so cool in the 90's, I used to make my own too 😎
whoot! he-man cartooniness painting retro heroquest minis ? let's go !!! I might paint mine with your inspiration in mind XD
omg Dana when you pulled out Mutant Chronicles my face lit UP. I love the off-model 40k-ness of those minis. And the board! It's a work of art.
Mutant chronicles has some of my favorite art from this era! Would love to see you dig into it more!

He-Man HQ would be pretty cool! But I'd love to see the MC stuff painted up, especially in your neon/vw style. I think they'd look amazing!
I think Siege of the Citadel minis would be the most interesting. Also a Pogs battle report maybe?

Bonus Broadway and a Ratty Boi!
He-Man style for the heroes. Grimdark the enemies!
