The mix of traditional attires with the confluence of hinduism starts way back in the year 1725 when the then king of Kangleipak /Manipur (called PAMHEIBA who was approximately 16-18 years old ) re-christened himself as Maharaj Garibnawaz, after converting to Hinduism. People at those times, considered the king as a direct descendant of God. People who did not like the sudden change were given a choice of either go to exile or stay as a hindu. The proof of these exiled meeteis can be found loitering all over the nearby states like Assam/Tripura/Nagaland and even in the present Day Bangladesh. The brand of hinduism paractised is a modified in the form of vaishnavism with (Sri Cheitnaya Mahaprabhu brand of Brajabashis). The dress worn by the bride is actually supposed to have been worn by Radha. And the entire chants during marriage ceremony (of marriage) are the series of Radha-Krishna romancing activities in brindhavan in sanskrit (with its corresponding meeteilon/(local language) version. Every girl who marries in this traditional marriage, waits for such an eventful opportunity in their life. You may notice one characteristic feature in our manipur that inspite of hindu confluence, we have never left our own original religious activities. I have a suggestion for you guys, when you pronounce meetei, you must sound like this mee + tei (not like ME+ TE). The place is rich in its cultural heritage. But you know, none of us carry out marketing to the outside world since, people are busy with their struggle for survival. And thank you for highlighting our cultural bonanza

Despite Meetei following Hinduism 300 years ago , Meetei still follow their forefathers Religion Sanamahism .
