I don’t get why they would be sued: their songs were theirs, where is the fraud? They just rewrote their biography... so what! They were talented and they were selling.
Certain facts were told that lead to the signing of the contract. Since the decision to create certain terms of the contract were based off of the lies told about themselves, Sony can sue on this basis.
Bob Longhorn I see where your coming from but it’s more to do with how the Scottish accent sounds, same with British people. It just doesn’t flow as nice as in an American accent when your singing that’s why you hear a lot of pop stars sound very American when they sing.
I think we should bring them back aha
shout out to sony for doing their basic due diligence. tbf it's not their strong point.
Easy, misrepresentation...
How is this a con game though? They still performed their own music, live, with their own voices. At most you can say they are posers but even that's a stretch. Plenty of UK artists sing with American accents, hell half the world has artists singing in English despite living in a country that uses another language.
yea they seemed pretty good too
@@luxgame246 no they didnt sound good wtf
The Gorillaz are cartoons and yet they're allowed to be a band.
@@damien1781 thanks for clearing that up for us, I'm sure most of us had trouble forming an opinion but now you made it much easier on the rest of us.
@@dancingCamels The gorillas are actual musicians with talent that are animated.
They made their own songs, wrote their own lyrics...still true artists in my book. Nothing Milli Vanilli about that.
Nobody knew their name. this video is the peak of their fame. It’s tragic. As for performing with D12, it’s BS. Imagine doing that and having no pictures to show for it 🙄💩😂
But bit their WHOLE style from Eminem tho 🤦🏾
So the message from the music industry is - talent doesn't matter, brand is what matters.
Iggy Azalea comes from Australia and puts on an Atlanta Blaccent but these guys are von artists? Please!
Yeh but everybody knows where she came from
First things first she’s the realest.... lol
Why you hating on iggy what does she has to do with that 🤡🤡🤡
The initial mistake they made was in trying to audition in England - probably not a good idea if you're Scottish, though if they just went straight to America if it was anywhere outside Scotland in the first place, they more likely would have immediately been seen as a bigger deal and got their talent taken more seriously, even before their Californian personas - which they could have used like their alt character alter egos or something (some rapping musicians do it), there is definitely a market for it there, but it's not exclusive to them just because of the country they came from, even Vanilla Ice did a similar thing with his background claiming to be from another state there than he was and when that came out it kind of made him come off 'not being real' as they would say.
Although with their Californian personas they did just about break through into the mainstream as they were increasingly becoming more and more popular, but when Sony's merger and subsequent job losses left them without supporters in the record company and their planned first single was delayed for at least 6 months as the label was forced to focus on other acts. Boyd had left to get married and his wife was pregnant so he left the group, moved back to Scotland, and got work in the oil industry. Bain then continued performing as Brains on a smaller scale, but he subsequently just came out and revealed the hoax, it probably wouldn't have mattered as much if they waited till blowing up first then revealing it.
@Ins Dynsmite Carti right for hating on that weirdo culture vulture lol
They were real rappers actually, just with a fake background story
Just like American rappers
Just these "gangsta rappers" from the suburbs!
As opposed to what? They all are. Look up Rick Ross as a prime example.
@No one Because he's an example of the many rappers who concocted their origin story to create their on professional persona. Are you pretending that's not a thing?
Dat Meme Yh then look up G fredo an 7981 Kal, obviously there are rappers out their who are real gangsters
Your talent was never a lie. I respect you guys hardcore. Nobody can take what you accomplished from you.
what did they accomplish
those flows are ASS
Drugs was the missing story character that explains the last part.

What do you mean

Do you think if I fake a Scottish accent, I could get my novel published?
indubitably
Lmao
I’d buy it...
Try it see what happens
An Irish accent might work better.
Dude this could be a movie, or an amazing Netflix documentary at least. I'd watch it.
"The Great Hip Hop Hoax" it's called.
"California Schemin'/Straight Outta Scotland" is the book.
Yep easily. Make a doc about it man
Definitely a movie for sure.
But why? You just got the full story here, straight from the horses mouth... boom, done - move on.
There is a movie, it’s called “the great hip hop hoax”
If they did this today it’d be all fine lmao 21 savage was from the UK sayin he was from here 😂
He only lived up till like 7 years old over there. If you grew to 7 yo in New York, move to texas, then live up to adulthood in texas, you're not a new Yorker. You're a texan.
@@Spooobz dead ass
MF DOOM's the same way tho, he's from London but who doesn't see him as a NYC artist? And he was way before these dudes.
@@goonfish That's true, he grew up in NY tho I think he moved as a child. Lewis Parker another Londoner who went NY, accent changed after years, same could be said for slick rick!
Ned 21 it was 🇩🇲 not the UK
The only reason they did all that was because they were told they wouldnt make sense their from scottland, you cant blame them.
Yes because they tried to launch their careers from England as Scots, not a good idea as they said we can't sell 'Scottish rap' - which is funny when you realise that rap actually came from Scotland they say.
If they had tried to audition in America instead, they'd have got in a lot easier even as their real selfs without the Silibil n' Brains personas.
The should have ignored him and worked hard instead.
Someone needs to make a movie out of this.
If you can find the feature length documentary, it’s one of the best
I think they did
They did, it came out around 10 yrs ago.
They did it’s called the hip hop hoax
no but srs, we rlly need someone to make a biopic about this..
I must be disconnected because I have no clue who these guys are.
"the next eminem..."
Worse... I cannot find a name anywhere on this damn page.
No one does
And I still have no clue, even after watching this.

It’s not the value, it’s the price that idiots pay.
Some people aren’t necessarily idiots, but are careless and hit the “Buy Now” button, and it’s how many sellers scam consumers. Nothing is regulated in that marketplace.
You’d be surprised by what product sells for what price.
If this is a called a con then probably 90% of the music artists are conman
World is not ready for Scottish rap... But real people are 💪
Ill believe it when i see it
No one wants it
Shoutout to DJ Badboy, his Scottish rapping over happy hardcore is an experience
Would be the literal definition of mumble rap
Uh no.
I love how he said “i take one of the tracks and upload it in american” lmaoo
It’s almost like Sony was just embarrassed from their gullibility, I don’t see any crime in what they did. Pure genius 👌👊
Nobody knew their name. this video is the peak of their fame. It’s tragic. As for performing with D12, it’s BS. Imagine doing that and having no pictures to show for it 🙄💩😂
@@REALCrazyCritic even if it is true its meaningless. d12 without eminem is only a mid-level act and when they have toured the uk, like a lot of hip hop acts from the states at that level, they have tended to get local acts to fill the bill, some of which can be hilariously bad. ive seen absolute nobodies support public enemy, jurassic 5, etc at 1000-2000 capacity venues

Maybe Afro copied them and nade a banger? 🤣🤣

This just shows that people do not care about true talent, but only believe in the perception that someone is talented.
Eminem should have signed them, its just 2 guys who wanted to become famous. Who care what their background is, they were making music and not lip sync like other artists.
@@damien1781 WTF are you on about?

This is fucking gold. These 2 should have been awarded not condemned, the only reason people got pissed off is because they realised how dumb they were for not working it out.
Is nobody gonna talk ab the doode flashing his junk at 2:19
Came here for that. Why is no one talking about that? 😂

thats everyday behavior for UK
I remember watching a documentary about them a while ago. One of them is from my home town of Arbroath and the other one is from Dundee
Their story would make an awesome tv miniseries.

Their accents are beyond clockable. Good on them for conning everyone. They deserved it!
Agreed
I'd say they only conned those music industry blockheads. Their stage performance looked authentic to me. If sony had any sense of humor (and business) they would have just used the story to promote these guys. Instead they managed to throw a a good act on the garbage heap. Stupid.
2:19 did anyone else notice the guy flashing the camera
Lmaooo that fact that NO ONE talked about it
Honestly the big loss is that you lost a friend through all this and I appreciate you being honest in sharing that you nearly took your own life, much respect your way..

The industry sent these lads down that route because they didn’t initially accept them. If it was today they’d do well, there’s appetite for all types of sound in rap nowadays
If there's any way at all to break Scottish rap to the world then this is probably it. These guys should drop an album right now
This has got to be one the best stories I’ve ever heard!!!! Fair play to you lads 😂😂😂😂👍🏻
Love It! You guys deserve a movie about it.
Die Antwoord made their careers pretending to be the characters they created and found massive success. Theres still footage of a young Watkin Jones rapping at a street fair in Cape Town years before Ninja was thought up.
Gavin spent his first 11 years in South Africa before moving to Scotland
Nick Unger we all use to go to a place called Le Club in Johannesburg.thats when Max Normal was at his peek spitting bars 🎶
3:37 anyone else from hemet/san Jacinto in here? Yeah my jaw is on the ground too
That must've been such a crazy (and fast) ride. I bet these two wouldn't trade it for the world looking back on it now.
Tell you one thing , these guys can rap very well !!!!!!!!!!
Scottish raps actually getting quite big definitely some dope rappers here in Scotland
The underground music scene there is expansive I would imagine, have you heard shogun?
This is epic. And inspiring.
They have done more than most people ever will, good on them!

I think this is one of the greatest rock and roll stories of all time. Just wish they got a bit further with it, still amazing

The music lyrics these lads have done are just absolutely brilliant genius s I would buy their music and I buy nowt I’m gonna keep an eye out for them and hope they have more

Most of rappers are lying about their criminal records and street live, so what's so wrong on lying about where they're from?

Wow what an amazing story. So glad this guy got himself out of the dark place mentally.
Genius! Absolfuckenlutely shows the true colors of the entertainment industry, no ANY multimillion dollar industry.
I was fascinated by them since I saw the documentary that was released a few years back. Engrossing stuff.
Please add their book California Schemin to the description cos they go way more in depth telling their story in the book and it is amazing.
I got to meet Gavin and the boys when I moved to London in 2004. I actually went to school with his cousin and that's how I got introduced to their music. Bazza gave me a cd of their 'american' music and I was blown away by how good it was. I met up with Bazza in London and spent a day with the boys and had a night out with them that fully went off the rails, they never broke character once. Knowing what the story was while it was happening and seeing it play out was wild! I was kinda bummed when it all came to an end cos I really loved the music they were putting out.
These guys are real artists, and its sad that the music industry cares about where someone comes from more than their musical talent.
I'd take this guy's any day over some of the altered and filtered voice crap and hired songwriters crap that makes it the mainstream rap.
Lol that dude pissing on the window at 2:18

This story is amazing. First I'm hearing about it. Absolute fuckin legends.
It wasn't their fault that Scottish culture is stigmatized in hip hop. They did what they had to do to use their (very real) skills. I actually have a lot of family in Dundee, Scotland.. though I'm American (and this is the first time I've heard the city mentioned anywhere.. other than on a jam jar I once saw lol).
Not going to lie, this is amazing!! Hats off to them, their music sounds fire and that's all that matters
That flow is pure aces!!!

I listen to this while drinking irn bru everyday and I'm in california
But you could hear their real accents coming through whenever they spoke, wtf? 😅
