So the base commander doesnt want him to do that. He had him cook rice. He cook all the rice. The 1 month ration was cooked in 3 days. Thus he was relieved from cooking duty.
He returned to walking.

I dunno... it's not believable that a small town would even talk to a random person asking about anybody in the town. They might ask about the town and locations, and they'll answer. But people? Yeah, they would tell you to kick rocks.
Actually, from living in a small town, I have learned that they'll happily gossip about people to anyone who'll listen. Just have to find the right people.
