Outstanding reporting thanks to 'down to earth' for bringing this very dark reality of rural Maharashtra& India in front of people & at the time when now there is clear cut division in 'Rich India' & 'Poor India'..Rich India where all government, bureaucracy, Media, all institutions are there servent, but in poor India no one give attention all government spending goes to rich india, inequality is rising exponentially, poor are deprived politically, Socially, & economically...Mass media is structuring narratives superficially, &in favour of rich...& In this tough time you have turned your camera towards 'poor India' really glad to see you... 🙏

I recently went to Ambajogai(Beed) Talking to Some agricultural students of Latur,I got to know that Though rainfall is scarce, and uneven, the crops that are grown here are soyabean,Toor daal and Cotton. For common people,or students who are still studying,we see only the tip of iceberg. The deep rooted problems should be addressed or else We will have all machines and development and still will lack everything. Please bring out more small documentaries. These need to reach the authorities.

Very sad!! We have so many engineering colleges, law colleges, but Karnataka has only about 6 agricultural universities with few seats. We need more people looking into this, then only will we atleast have a chance of finding some kind of a solution.
Some nations invest money into studying their climatology and agriculture, we should also start doing it in whatever scale we can.
These many suicides are heart rending to look at. 😞

Hello @DownToEarth. I really love your content & have been watching your channel for more than a year now.
Just one suggestion: Please don't dub the Non-English conversation/interview to English. Just the subtitles are enough for an English speaker who is watching. Keeping audio as it is also maintains the authenticity of your content.
Dubbing the real audio (for example in this video Marathi) makes the video less interesting for a person who belongs to Maharashtra (or is a Marathi speaker).

Why isn't the BJP government doing anything here to save lives? Modi ji is busy inaugurating events and trumpeting his achievements (I admire his contribution though 😁), instead of letting his 2nd line leaders to do so. He must visit Marathwada once and announce life-changing plans.

the things have changed in many villages due to Paani foundation, they had successfully changed many lives in maharashtras drought prone areas...they run "Water Cup" from 2016 to 2019 (due to covid it was stopped in 2020 as the period of water cup was 8th april to mid May) and thousands of villages become water abundant....in just 45 days....
and now they are running "Farmers Cup" where in they are teaching these farmers how to do farming in groups, and also teaching them how to do it without using fertilizers and harmful chemicals....the results are positive and all of them are making good money

The west coast of India in Maharashtra receives excessive rainfall, on the other hand these Marathwada regions are drought prone areas..... If the govt. makes infrastructure to trap all the rain water which falls on the windward side of western ghats and transport this water across through the pipelines, canals etc..... this problem could largely be solved....
Also farmers should be made aware on the use of tankwater irrigation and not just relying completely on groundwater.... Wetllands should also be preserved and not filled up with gravel for the construction of buildings

Climate change will deteriorate the situation gradually and it will be unbearable financially to do farming in majority of our country where majority of population is engaged in Agriculture. I don't even want to think further in that direction.

I'm from Beed. We have two pieces of agricultural land in two different locations 2kms apart half acre each. I'm 25 years old right now preparing for competitive exams and my elder brother is 30 years old and yet unmarried and unemployed. He does gigs beside focusing in the meagre farmland that lacks any kind of irrigation apart from monsoons. Even monsoons have become irregular and inadequate. One cannot do any business for lack of intial capital, can't take loans for we are already debt ridden since I can remember. There is no single education institute in entire Beed district for post metric studies which can guarantee employment prospects after getting a degree from it, even if you top it. All educational institutions are of MLAs and MPs who use these institutions for vote farming and extending their political interests, and nothing beyond that. Education in my district is only on apparent level, there is no actual education whatsoever.
So for families like us who have meagre land without irrigation who engage in business remains only option of studying hard and getting either a government job or private one in the metro cities. Regardless of kind of job you get, in 99% scenarios you'll have to leave your village and migrate to the place of job outside the district. Migration for livelihood solves one set of problems to an extent and creates even more problems in longer term. One's family cannot function properly by merely sending funds home as there is illiteracy all over the place, my own parents being illiterate(the main reason my elder brother cannot leave the town as I'm studying in another city and there has to be someone to manage household.)
The quality higher education seems legitimate way out, but there is no provision for that either. All middle class or rich send their children out of the district for eduction. Marginal farmers or daily wage workers can't afford to send their children not even to taluqa for education.
So there is no quality education that caters skills to provide you any kind of job, you face hurdles to migrate for job, you can't get a decent paying local job, the land doesn't earn you anything beyond keeping you alive, people don't want to wed their daughter with you for obvious reasons, you can't live sustainably without taking high interest loans that keep piling, the draught hits often, the utter misery of all this makes you addict to all kinds of substances from tobacco, gutkha to country liquor.
And if you somehow get married despite all of this, you just pass on the generational trauma to the next generation. The vicious cycle keeps on going.

Kindly look into it ...and help change this cycle of misery

It's not issue of Marathwada only. The condition of North Maharashtra region is same.
People here brought bride by giving money to the intermediary who have contacts in vidarbha or another region and caste isn't come in distant equation (that's good to see).
Here people also don't have issues like water scarcity as mostly in Marathwada, they get returns but no one want to marry their daughter to farmer, it's issue of hardships mainly.
Another thing is same as pictured in documentary girls/womens get higher freedom in urban areas.

Root problem is to get maximum people's from this region out of farming to something other earning source,
Areas where water is a biggest issue would start shifting to other money source,
Which woman want to marry a man who's earnings are not constant and may lead to loan defaults and then suicide,
One of my friend hear in Mumbai from marathvada but his family is living in city from 50 year's, when he was serching for bride he was flooded by many girls parents from his native place, even 3 girls was calling him constantly to imprace him for marriage,
He marry Mumbai girl from his own cast but he were told me this some years ago which I took as joke but now it seems like very serious issue

Marathwada region was not part of Maharashtra during British Era. It was ruled by Nizam of Hyderabad. Historical, geography, political factors etc are the factors behind backwardness. This region should be helped financially as same as Jammu Kashmir... article 371 of Indian constitution has not been helpful to Marathwada..in fact article 371 J applicable to Karnataka region is more helpful for Karnataka people when both region ruled by Nizam

This situation can be easily tackled if women think from the perspective that they marry the farmer and took up the charge of any small business like a stationary shops etc. This ways , both will be happy .

    • @angel21991
      @angel21991 Рік тому +5

For that to be possible women should be taken seriously and respected in roles outside their homes in rural settings. If a female shop owner and shop keeper has to carry out business she has to be taken seriously when handling vendors and costumers. Would a rural social structure support this ? As explored in this report, women are choosing urban living because they want a life not burdened by social restrictions that leave them unable to contribute to their families wellbeing beyond cooking, cleaning, fetching water and bearing children.
