    I am a believer in mixed herds. I live in the Pacific Northwest. Last year when fires and smoke threatened the barn where my horse lives, we had to quickly load 14 horses into various trailers and move them to safety. All are used to trailers, but some had to go in unfamiliar ones. It was good not to have to worry about which horse could or couldn’t go with another. Not the sort of circumstance any of us wanted but all were safe partly because they were all familiar and comfortable with each other.

      Exactly! That's a point I completely forgot to mention. All the horses need to get along so we as humans don't have to accommodate at the last minute when there is an emergency. It amazes me that so many don't have that forethought or maybe just don't care...

    One thing about your place, the horses all have separate paddocks & shelters. There are many places that don't have that, so the horses are together most of the time, & are not observed as closely as you observe your buddies. Much of the adjustments to each other are unobserved. The bridge seems to hold a position of status LOL! Such a nice group of horses. Merry Christmas!

      True, if horses are all together then they do a lot when people aren't around because a lot of people don't hang around horses.

    Another reason to hang out with the herd, it would seem, is to maintain your highest-horse status in a non-training circumstance. Also, it would seem you would want to encourage a mixed herd for when you get together with other horse people to ride as a group with differing genders.

    I wonder if Roni instead of feeling “possessive” over Lena just has to have a mare to control. It is something stallions do in the wild I think. And perhaps the behavior gives Roni a sense of power to elevate his place in the herd (since his drive-bys not that productive lol). . Sorting out positions in the herd seems to be a primal activity, sometimes on a daily basis. I could be way off base. But even if I’m partially right, what makes Roni always go to Lena? (Maybe less resistance).

    great herd. Love watching and I love listening to you. It is nice to hear someone that really knows what's going on. The 2 bays are funny. It is obvious who is dominant. One does a lot of moving around, backing, threatening, while the other one (Roni?) bites at the legs, doesn't move his feet (on command that is) and when he does, it's never to the side or back, it is only forward. He keeps racking up the scores while the other one lets emotions keep him from winning (or leading I should say). Just love this

    @caitlinw8351 2 роки тому +8

    After you said you don’t care about keeping mares and geldings separate and want all your horses to get along, I thought, I agree! Then i was thinking it’s a good thing your horses are so calm, what if a grumpy horse was introduced? I see lots of people online saying that their horses can not be turned out with others because of aggression etc. And they are right, the aggression does occur. But it just occurred to me that no matter what age, breed, background temperament horse you get they always end up getting along with your other horses. And i think the reason for this is that all of their needs are being properly met outside of the herd setting (properly fed and not in pain etc). Maybe this is obvious to some but it was a lightbulb moment for me lol.
    Now i’m wondering; do you think there would be aggression if food was introduced? If you put 10 hay piles in the arena, like how many horses are kept in group pastures, would the demeanor change? Or are your horses secure enough not to be possessive of resources?
    Very thought provoking stuff. Thanks Graeme!

      I think I've mentioned in a couple of videos lately that to figure out the actual hierarchy, I'd have to bring out food. When just hanging out or playing, it's not always easy to figure out the hierarchy as there is no real "survival" thing to work out between them.
      I have in fact had "grumpy" horses here, there was one here last year named "Skip". He was grumpy for sure... He essentially wasn't confusing at all when it came to telling other horses what to do and it made me think twice about stepping in between. Either way, it all got sorted.
      For the aggression that happens so regularly out and about and once in a while here, it's commonly due to being hungry and the horse is just constantly in survival mode. It's been proven a long time ago that horses that have regular and reliable food will be MUCH calmer and level headed. The horses here do have the ability to understand they don't have to "survive" here and in fact thrive. Food is readily available, nobody has ulcers and nobody is "starving" when they go out to play. There are a few playtimes here on video where you can tell the horses are a bit grumpy and competitive as they were put out before topping them up and they had run out early. It's a VERY important item in horse husbandry. So in the end I'm just confirming that you are correct in your observation.
      If I were to put out 10 piles of hay, they would get sorted out in a few minutes, there *might* be a bit of jostling after that to "own" a pile, but for the most part they would be relatively calm I believe. I've seen that exact aggressive behaviors from horses that are starved all night due to running out of food within a few hours after being fed at 6pm and then 8am comes around and they'll beat the crap out of each other for survival purposes. It's sad...
      Anyways, great observation and great question. Thank you for that!

      Gracie's tail is just how it is and has always been that way. She's an Arabian and a bit of a small horse, I've never looked at as thin before, perhaps it's the way she holds it.
      Golden Ears mountain is what it's called. I don't believe it's part of that range as we're about an hour west of Harrison Lake, here is a excerpt from wikipedia:
      The Lillooet Ranges are the southeasternmost subdivision of the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. They are located between the drainage of the Lillooet River and Harrison Lake on the west and the canyon of the Fraser River on the east, and by the lowland coastal valley of that river on the south. The Lillooet Ranges are approximately 8100 square kilometres in area. The range is extremely rugged and varied in terrain, and includes some of the highest peaks in southwestern British Columbia. The highest is Skihist Mountain, 2,968 m, crowning the Cantilever Range in the heart of the area to the west of the community of Lytton at the confluence of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers. The northernmost subdivision of the Lillooet Ranges is the Cayoosh Range, which includes the second-highest summit in the Lillooet Ranges, an unnamed 2,855 m peak just south of Seton Lake and about 20 km WSW of the town of Lillooet

    Mares and geldings!??? Mine have always been together (I only have four) and I have never seen a need to separate them. Ya, I know some people do, but some people like to waste their time. I am currently at a boarding stable with about 45 horses. Several herds. All mixed and they all get along. Great opportunity to watch herd dynamics and watch new encounters sort it out. In the end, they always get along if you give them the chance. That's what horses do. Leana is only high 13s? The rest must be real small. She looks like over 16 compared to the rest. Funny you have an Icelandic. I just watched a documentary about them...in Iceland. Very cool horses and very tough. I always liked them, but they aren't very common in this part of Canada. The horses do what they want until I step into the pasture and even the herd leader steps aside for me, but they all like me. I must be doing something right.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  2 роки тому +1

      No, Lena is about 15 hands, the new horse is about 13 and so is the icelandic. No, we don't have many icelandics here but there are a couple of breeding farms in B.C. It sounds like you're doing something right if they are willing to get out of your way. That's what I want when I ask for it, when I don't then I expect them to stay. Which they do :) You want both. Have them pay attention to both the requests.

      Here's all the questions that I have about here answered: ua-cam.com/video/7SsmuXwXz4c/v-deo.html Her breed is unknown as she's a feral horse.

    You might not see this but if u do you should just put roni in the arena with the boys only. no lena or other mares n see how he does

    Horses do establish alien Ed and relationships. They experience joy and sadness. So do cows. We don’t give our four-leggeds enough credit. Oh, then there are elephants. They do the same. Probably better at all that than the two-leggeds.

    Ok so I have to ask you seem super kind but there in the barn at night right

      No, I don't torture my horses by putting them in tiny little stalls so they can eat, drink, stand and sleep in their own urine and feces. Where they can't get fresh air or watch their friends. Where they can't walk around and not feel trapped inside a building with absolutely no escape for hours or days to where their feet just start to rot away slowly and they have major body issues due to inaction. If you think none of this makes sense, that's ok. This channel is likely not for you as that type of archaic horse husbandry isn't used here. If you want to know more, please let me know, but I won't tolerate anybody coming here telling me that not putting them in a barn is abuse of some sorts when in fact it's the exact opposite.

    I truly love your herd,I am hooked 😍 ❤ on how you treat them.
    ua-cam.com/video/gRxolEA1VnU/v-deo.html
    This is a frisians stable in the Netherlands were I am from, who basically use your same method.
    The mares are out with a gelding.
    Their stallions of course can not be part of the herd.
    But since you have mares and geldings it's nice to see how they interact and talk horse.

    Why does roni keep bullying little miss 😩😩😩😩

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  2 роки тому +2

      Horses don't bully, what they do is protect their space or what they consider their own herd. We'll never know exactly why he doesn't want her in so close, but over time it has gotten much better :) Sometimes it just takes time to meld together.

    Being part of a herd is wonderful! I like to pretend I'm at least a little bit a part of the local herd here. It looks like Roni and Mr. Wild have not accepted little Miss, but that will happen, right?
    I'm re-evaluating the displaced aggression idea from Mr. Wild towards Little Miss in that first video. Maybe her being in heat made him less aggressive towards her at first... I was so sure of my idea! Horses have a way of humbling you-in a good way, don't they?
    Love that she has her new little posse of mares to hang with - gives her some backup. Her personality reminds me of Luke--such good natured, friendly souls.

      Yes, they'll accept her more and more as time goes on. It's not an immediate thing sometimes as they continue to try to communicate in whatever dialect they have going on with her :)
      Yes, horses humble me everyday as I watch and learn and wonder.
