I never understood people's desire to make a hole like that and fill it with the stuff that should instead be thrown around the base of the trees in all directions. Nature does it right. This is only for people who don't have enough organic matter. If you have a lot of wood chips then just throw it at the base of your trees. The roots will distribute better and give the banana tree more stability. This should only be done if you don't have enough organic material for a lot of them, so they can all share the wealth. If you have a lot then forget about the hole. Just spread it everywhere and make a foot deep layer of good soil over the years. That's what they want.
Are you sure that the roots could grow so deep to go under the pit and receide the nutrients? I am not sure that bananas root could go so deep. What dio you think, have you alraedy dig out a banana tree?

Banana rooots grow along the surface. Not deep. This creates a deep bowl. eventually burying the roots deeper.
