  • Graham Massey and 808-State are a Manchester based band who’s classic track Pacific State was a defining moment in the early rave and party scene. It actually features a 909, not an 808 as the main drum machine.
808-State have been going for 30 years now and have just released a new album recorded in the old Granada TV centre in Manchester - titled “Transmission Suite” available now.
Gaz posed the questions, and shared the love of prog.

I recently fell in love with ex:el all over again. Still sounds as amazing as it did in 1991.

808/Graham played at a (large volume, 1200 occupancy) nightclub I worked at in ~1991. They were great guys. They brought ALL their gear - all this vintage analog stuff including a BitONE and Moog's, etc...So cool. I remember talking to Grahama at length about gear and he specifically focused on the BitONE, talking about how he loved it. Even as synth guys, we hadn't ever heard of it, stateside.

The Bit One was made by Italian company Crumar. I believe it was released in the US under a different name. Have owned a Bit01 (the rack version) myself, it's a lovely synth. Meaty mids. I miss it.

His Dad was a senior manager at the telecoms firm I worked for back in the '80's. I remember his Dad, Derek, being immensely proud when Graham and his band appeared on Top of the Pops with Pacific State. Happy days.

I wonder how many will listen to Pacific State straight after this? I'm one.

Truly awesome guy. Discovered their music about 2010 when I was playing GTA San Andreas, there was a radio station playing house classics and I was listening to Pacific and all it's various versions ever since.

Named 808state, and didn't have an 808, that is hilarious! I drive for Ferrari Racing, we drive mostly Volkswagen.
