Over 50 years ago I worked for Permanite in Hertford as a laboratory technician checking incoming materials and finished product - Roofing felt, specialised felts, sheathing felt and Permapots. The company must have had a connection with Matlock as a lot of product was transported by a firm Matlock Transport. It was a large facility with three production plants B1, B2 and the sheathing felt plant. The latter was the dustiest workplace ever, where chopped up jute/hemp was rolled/compressed into a wide sheet then dipped in hot pitch. I believe the sheathing felt was used in airport runway construction and was exported. The hoppers at Matlock probably held talc or finely crushed limestone for mixing in the manufacture of bitumen or asphalt for making into blocks for using in constructing asphalt covered flat roofs. Good industrial explore -Stay safe!
Great explore Ant. The orange markers on the bins are the Hazmat indicators, that's why they are prominent and on each bin. The 2W tells the fire service how to deal with it, the bottom number states what the product is. 2 for instance means use fine spray and W means use a liquid tight chemical suit and contain any spillage. As for the 3257, it means: ELEVATED TEMPERATURE LIQUID, N.O.S., at or above 100 °C and below its flash-point (including molten metals, molten salts, etc.), filled at or below 190 °C
Thank you for your wonderful videos, I use to live in Matlock as a child and looked onto this place, so remember it well. I live in Canada now but being born in the Peak District I do miss all these great places.
Ant, the man holes #17.17 look like they are turn tables to help the trolleys turn and go out from whence they came, Great video once again thanks for sharing, may be you can add a link in the discription for jo jos adventures.
The first building was probably for vehicle maintenance as the pit was classic facility in garages / workshops. Not manhole covers, but wagon turntables. Pretty common where you had small rail wagons / tubs pushed by hand and allowed a right angle change in direction often to go inside a building or store or to load a hopper, or on docks to load ships.
Nice one especially liked all the hoppers and old equipment. But you want to watch it. Permanite used blue and white asbestos in their flooring and roofing products for years. You don't know what residual asbestos dust may still be around, like on the top floor where that big screw was - on floors and inside equipment.
I used to work for a roofing company in Nottingham and we used to use Permanite asphalt. It comes in large blocks that would be melted down in a mixer, from the mixer the molten asphalt would be transported to the area were it was being laid in metal buckets. It was hot, heavy work and I don’t miss it. Another life.
There goes fearless Ant up flights of open stairways, "I'm not very good with heights" likewise, I'm sitting here with sweaty palms just watching, thanks for that!!!!😨 Another jam packed explore full of bits of dead machinery, loving it 👍🏻👍🏻❤❤
i work for the company that owns permanite now, its very intersting to see old sites, the grangemill site is a new and moden but sitll producing the same products it a modified block bitumen plant
Great explore. Hoppers and silos were the words you needed. The giant corkscrew is an Archimedes screw which can but used to move wet or dry product. You walked past a tube on you way up the tall building. The screw would be inside that.
Great explore loved all the old winding gear ....years ago i worked an old timber yard that had rail tracks running through the mill with old wooden turntables outside always had the job of moving timber on bogies from one part of the sawmill to the other those tracks reminded me of those days ...Thanks for another great video regards Frank & Lee..
Another good little film. Reminds me of my visit to the site in March last year it was really wet weather we did not stay as long as we would have if the weather had been better and we did not see quite as much as you did even though we saw most of the site.
Very interesting indeed, the fact that these buildings always seem to have been evacuated very suddenly makes me wonder if the workers actually knew the closure was coming!!! No security around on such a big site seems odd though, still it made for a good bit of exploring.
I'd heard things about security after I'd been, along with others who have said they can just walk in. It's not fenced, gated or any effort to keep anyone out 🤷
I think they’re hoppers that would have fed the chunks of material that in turn would have fed down to the heated end moulding unit that produced the finished product. Amazing they just left them. The Archimedes screws you saw would have fed the hoppers from ground level with the raw material at a guess. Fascinating and shame graffiti scribblers have been in. Another brilliant video so thanks
Wow braver than I could ever be. Won’t go up and down stairs I can see thru and def. not a grated .floor. Glad you did tho I enjoyed that nosey around. What a huge place but it looks so forlorn and sad. Thank you so much for that I really enjoyed it. Please stay safe
Nice to know I'm not the only wimp whose belly turns to mush when confronted by a sudden drop! It's not so much the height, mainly the thought of the sudden stop when you reach the floor.
Hi Ant, Just watched your last video, spent a lot of time motorcycling round that way when I was younger. We must have a proper chat about what was said last week and get something sorted.
Amazing place, looked so empty on first sight but the more you poked about the more there was to see. What you referred to as manholes were simple truck turntables. Push your truck on, swing it and push it off again, simples.
can u leagily go inside as im from matlock and live very close to the building and for a good few years me and my friends have wonderd if we can explore the inside of this without getting into trouble with the police
@@TrekkingExploration ok thank u and do u have any other good places to explore in the matlock area that would be safe for me and m friends as we r only 15
Yes, visited a week ago, no security, just threats that there are cameras active but I know for a fact that the stress has no power and I have never seen a camera. Everybody goes there.

Great explore! I had a poke around yesterday - fascinating place.

Fantastic place. Some interesting grafitti there, looks like a local 'Picasso' has a great blank canvas there! 😎👍
Thanks for the video and chat. An interesting walk back in time. Cheers mates.
Always love seeing art by Coloquix in these places! Thanks for another interesting video!
Glad you enjoyed it! It is quite nice to see in an odd way

Its a huge place, seems bigger on the inside than on the outside. I bet there were a couple of little bits i missed too :)
LOOKED LIKE A PRETTY DANGEROUS PLACE TO WORK STILL IS. Interesting.

Fascinating explore Ant & Jo jo
Cheers Craig :)
Thanks for the video loved the parts of times gone by. Thanks for letting us see all the levels and climbing up the ladders both of you!!😎🐓🐓🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it. All that climbing was stuff i'd not usually do :) Glad i did
Awesome I've just been today with my brother nice mechanical pieces in there. The graffiti is similar to bolsover coalite the smell too really cool👍👍
An Interesting spot and some equally interesting graffiti going on, must some ones blank canvas, thanks for taking us along👍🏴

Well that’s good then

Many thanks! Really apprecaite your comment :)
Nice to see you doing an Urbex again, buddy. 👍
Literally live across the road from this, been wanting to go but I am worried about asbestos? Help, I need answers 😂
nice video ant it made a nice change, very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching :)
great explore ant, i noticed plenty of graffiti that is everywhere around derbyshire.
That ever familiar worm... lol

Glad you enjoyed it. I don't do these often, however this one was worth a visit :)
Tonights Viewing Sorted ..Cheers Ant...
always good to hear a bloke who knows nothing about everything explaining stuff lol - fun explore anyway but do a little research
It was a turn up and explore visit without a plan. I enjoy the element of the unknown. Thanks for watching
If anyone is going I’d suggest wearing masks There is lots of dust
Dangerous as well, long exposure to asbestos leads to cancer in later years
Which way did you go in? from where I've been it seems to be pretty well guarded by the quarry workers
From the top end, never saw anyone except a couple of others having a mill around :)
Postcode pls🙏
Whose was the p100 cortina outside the building?
Is this up near Sainsbury's?
Yes mate, there's a gate in the east of that entrance but you can walk around it 😅
How do I get there quick ???
Hi, I’m planning on going here
can u leagily go inside as im from matlock and live very close to the building and for a good few years me and my friends have wonderd if we can explore the inside of this without getting into trouble with the police

Yeah i think it's a little harder to enter but maybe try rockwood pigments (matlock bath area)
nice video thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching 🙂
Can we still get in?

what is the music at 12.41?
Its called Thaw by Ethan Sloan. Try the sound search app, works great.
Boat in middle of derelict asphalt factory W H T ?
Pretty random hey lol
Asbestos roof.
It's a shame they just let it rot like that.
I can't really see it getting flattened anytime soon either
NOT THAT OLD
Think it was abandoned in 2014
We've been looking for this for a while now how do uiu get to it any chance of some info...t.i.a our team
