Sometimes I sit back and think 'woah, because the internet and people on it I get to listen to Roger Deakins for 80 minutes' and I appreciate it very much, Collider. Thanks.
I was the Property Master on "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" and working with Roger will always be a career highlight for me. A true Master of his craft, and a real gentleman on set. Love the interview. Thank you.
I was the film loader on “Jesse James” and will echo propguy72’s sentiments. It was the highlight of my career so far. Roger, his focus puller Andy, and dolly grip Bruce were awesome. Roger is as humble as he is talented. Thanks for the interview.
One thing that really struck me is that how James is totally instrumental in how Roger works. She is the actual legend here. Behind every great man...is a great woman.
I'd like to suggest adding James' name to the title - this is just as much her interview. They make an amazing team! Thanks for such a great video with them.
Oh man.. never would have imagined them to be so humble. Listening to them talk feels like I could hang out with them without feeling intimidated, they seem so inviting. Thanks for doing this interview! Its lovely!
Great interview. Let them speak and didn't try putting in as many questions as possible, and Roger and James are brilliant! The interviewer looks the same as I did, in awe! Cheers Collider!
I adore his honesty. Especially when speaking about The Assassination of Jesse James. Mentioning the hour longer (first) cut made for a better film. If there is ever an opportunity to fetch his coffee on set, I'll do whatever it takes. It must be an amazing experience to watch him work.
This is awesome! I bet Roger choose the time of the interview so the sun was in the right spot for shooting. Him and James are an awesome team & couple. Great interviewing technique too
This is so.. so Great! Thank you guys for opportunity to go deep into a Roger’s works! It was fantastic! Also a big thanks to James for watching Roger’s back) People all around the world need to have Roger’s mind clear to create) Big thanks, Master for your unique Vision!
I love Deakins' work, I literally idiolize his work, I even wrote my thesis based on roger deakins and the way he uses light in various films. The coen brother's collaboration, 1917 blew me off with the camera work on so many levels. I have not got the chance to watch blade runner yet, but I got the blu ray some time ago, will definitely find some time to enjoy that.
Comments weren’t available on the stream. Just FYI. That might be a new UA-cam thing though. Anyway to the point. This was a terrific interview with the masters themselves. I learned lots and was completely glue to the screen hearing what they had to say.
Roger is very candid about what he likes and dislikes, and it’s funny to see James keeping an eye out for Roger if he gets too candid lol. Their Team Deakins podcast is amazing! Check it out
I couldn’t fully appreciate the visuals until I watched it with no sound. It has a very immersive story and it’s easy to not pay as much attention while watching it. If one watches without sound and analyzes the thought process behind each shot, you watch an entirely new area of the film.
Kazuo Miyagawa is the greatest cinematographer who ever lived according to Mr.Deakins. wow! Now we need to ask him why he considers Mr. Miayagawa the greatest!
Any chance of releasing a full-length Director's Cut for "The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford'' ? Be a great Criterion Collection or Kino Lorber, etc.
Hey, why dont you ask more specific questions like what is his approach to lighting a scene, his workflow, what does he do when he first gets into an environnement he has to light? Or describe us how he lit a specific scene in a movie, like more precise stuff about his work, It'd be a lot more interesting and trivial than a whole interview of asking how he feels about stuff, thanks!
4 роки тому+1
Roger also said it is hard to teach how to be a cinematographer. It all comes down from the practical experience.
He actually won 3 oscars in a row lol. It just shows long one takes really make academy’s voters wet their pants. It is hard to do those and he did 3 movies in a row that are really good.
No! Roger is amazing and experienced but Chivo is also considered a master among his peers. You can't deny Lubezki's work as a masterpiece. It is for sure. Roger wasn't robbed of anything. Lot of good DP's thanks to the digital format
Sometimes I sit back and think 'woah, because the internet and people on it I get to listen to Roger Deakins for 80 minutes' and I appreciate it very much, Collider. Thanks.
Roger Deakins webcam feed is more well lit than most movies!
2053krypton most of his sit-down interviews are lit well also
His family videos must be cool..😂
Lol that's true
Lol what kind of movies do you watch?
@@ali_films Judging by his handle nothing of any worth.

@@ItsOnYou2 Hi Patrick.
That's so cool
Holy shit!! Two friends found themselves on a yt comment section, this is the pinnacle of cool!!
Excellent interview. Kudos to letting them riff and not interrupting. That's how you do it!
100%, thank you for hosting this so well, this was such a treat to watch!
Exactly what I thought off. Its so rare for me to enjoy such a long Interview. I agree with you
Cinematography students will get crazy with this interview. The longest one I have ever seen with Roger Deakins as I remember.Thank you so much!
Do you like Bruno Delbonnel?
I like his work allot
One thing that really struck me is that how James is totally instrumental in how Roger works. She is the actual legend here. Behind every great man...is a great woman.
Even his webcam shot is very great! Composition, lighting, colors... 😃
I'd like to suggest adding James' name to the title - this is just as much her interview. They make an amazing team! Thanks for such a great video with them.
Lovely interview. Great folks dedicated to their craft.
Long form AND letting the guests talk without interruption is my kind of interview 👍
My God, they seem so kind and warm. Would love to have tea with them. Great interview!
What a lovely young-spirited couple. I think of the astonishingly beautiful blue sky when The Dude meets Bunny by the swimming pool.
What a magnificent thing this is. Roger deakins...what a time to be alive.
What a humble and genuine talent! He is always so generous and gracious.
What is remarkable is how Roger and James directly look at us, the audience, which does not happen often in podcasts.
Oh man.. never would have imagined them to be so humble. Listening to them talk feels like I could hang out with them without feeling intimidated, they seem so inviting. Thanks for doing this interview! Its lovely!
Coolest DP who doesn't shy away from explaining his craft. Love Roger Deakins.
Blade runner 2049 is a masterpiece. It is definitely among Roger's top 5 works.
He is the re-creator of the modern cinematography, but his manner is like an assistant or intern that just entered the industry-such a modestness.
Great interview. Let them speak and didn't try putting in as many questions as possible, and Roger and James are brilliant! The interviewer looks the same as I did, in awe! Cheers Collider!
We need one like this with Thomas Newman, please! Brilliant and inspirational work!
I just wanna sit down with these two and have coffee. WHat a power couple so smart but more imporTant... THEY LOVE WHAT THEY DO.

I have only two wishes in my life to something as epic as roger and second is to find a talented and supportive wife like her.
she is more than just 'support'.
This is one of the best 90 minutes I've spent on UA-cam.
Great Interview, amazing how many movies he shot! Best in the business!!!

Can I read the thesis? :-)
Man I love him so much. What a legend
Great interview. Thank you. First Collider content I’ve watched in months.
My FAVORITE People I film... I love his use of dark lighting and Fire being the only light!!!
Wow, great hearing Stories from that Icon. Probably could listen to him for hours without getting bored.

Lovely interview with two masters of their craft! Thank you.

Thanks, collider. Great interview 👌
They are those people that I want this kind of interview. I hope they also interview Rick and Jaffa. Their writing style is classic.
Thanks so much for this, i love the dynamic in this and letting them talk at length about their experience.
This is a Masterclass! Thank you for making it!
Roger is unrealistic humble and chilled Techinician, with James makes a completely unique couple in Hollywood movie spectrum
This is the content I want!
Blade runner is stunning. I would not hesitate to watch another.

I'm from Mansfield, Ohio and love The Shawshank Redemption.
the one and only deakins, roger deakins
What an amazing couple of creative people.
he is amazing
I wonder if he actually measured the light and had a LUT for his webcam. Every Cinematographer needs a great assistant.
Wow what an amazing interview. Really good job.
A legend
Brilliant couple
Thank you for the interview! It was really good. Quick question - how did you record this session?
This is gold, thanks :)
great interview
great interivew!
Please make a book of your past photos. We want to see your collection.
1:23:34 duration. Dope.
It´s funny he says that DPs now think only about making beautiful shots, when he made mostly all the most gorgeous movies in recent years
Thank yOu

How do you leave out Sicario and No Country, Blade Runer for Old Men?

32:00 just an fyi, Mansfield is neither outside of Cleveland or Columbus. But rather smack dab between the two. It's 70 miles to either bigger cities.
From 13:00 to 15:00... Perfectly said.
Thank you so much for doing this 🙏 being a little too ambitious but try Chivo too?
Haha! Exactly what I felt too. There's hardly one good interview with him. I think Nikon had one but it was in Spanish with no subtitles.
I think he isn't a fan of interviews. Never appears in THR as well.
I love the internet
He has a very nice house.
There’s always a woman behind a mans success, always!!
I agree, sometimes she has a knife and he is running for his life hahahaha
“Always”
*Johnny Depp has entered the chat*
Roger is not letting his wife talk much without interrupting.. lol
He should asked more about Denis collab.
17:09 "You shoot with your gut not with your head."
44:00 Sky Captain?

Is Roger Deakins a Christian? He said on set there was a lot of prayer or did I hear that wrong.
Pretty sure it’s not just Christians who pray

Never heard of a female being called "James". Ever.
Trent Bell her first names Isabella but i guess she prefers James
What is Roger Deakins' final word? Is he namechecking someone Japanese?
Kazuo Miyagawa, if you didn't already know by now.
Roger was robbed so many times.
Twice by Emanuel lubezki, who is nowhere near on Roger's level.
Yeah Roger is God level. Chivo is exceptionally good though!
