I arrived at the 116th March 1970 as their Maintenance Test Pilot. I recall the swimming pool. Thank you Mike! The nurses from the evacuation hospital really liked the pool, and we liked having them visit! I flew with the guns (Stingers) and also with the slicks when I wasn't doing test flights. Great interview!

It always makes me step back in disbelief how veterans like Mike can provide such eloquent and concise answers to some very complex questions! The reason is that they are telling the straightforward truth - take it or leave it. They were there and did what many cannot or would not do. I pray for all those who have been in or are in the service. Thank you! Mike’s interview was amazing! Thank you to Larry for this amazing work. ❤️

@@VoicesofHistory Just subscribed. Without history, there will be nothing to teach us about our future. Keep up the good work. My brother was killed in combat there, and my uncle worked for the CIA spying operative program, parachuted up north and was captured and tortured. He was incarcerated at a hardcore concentration camp for over 15+ years near Hanoi, before escaping and defected here, living down south and still reliving the nightmares randomly. Those poor souls.

Cu Chi was famous for a whole underground city with miles of tunnels. Right under the feet of the Americans. The enemy would pop up and disappear out of nowhere and we couldn’t figure out why. It was not revealed til after the war the extents of the tunnels til after the war. Some tunnels were found during the war, but we had no idea about the network. They even had hospitals down there. Check out the book Tunnels of Cu Chi.

I read somewhere or watched a documentary that said the average ww2 vets as a whole had seen approximately 10 days of combat… Whereas the average Vietnam vets seen around 30 days combat. This included small skirmishes n bases getting mortared/shelled. The mental effects of ww2 might have seemed less for that wars vets because of the amount of actual time spent in combat was 2/3 less than that of Vietnam vets… There were exceptions of guys who seen way more or less combat, but most guys in ww2 were wounded after a day or 2 of actual combat, many would have to heal up, be sent back to the line n get wounded again after another couple days of combat which kept their average so much lower. Most of the time, if a ww2 vet was wounded a second or third time, it’d be more serious n they were sent home. Vietnam vets would many times spend 2 weeks to even a month in the jungle taking sniper shots n running into small patrols a lot more. And not as many would get wounded at once on average either.
