The exterior of the pyramid was formed by polished stones which have since been removed. The concavity of the sides may have been done to cause the exterior stones to be slightly biased in the direction of the centerline dividing each side of the pyramid. This would provide more stability for maintaining the exterior stones in place. If the underside of each exterior stone was slightly beveled relative to it's outer surface, then the exterior of each side of the pyramid could have ended up being perfectly flat.
