I'm so relieved to hear that this is typical! First year teacher of freshman, juniors, and seniors and wow! They aren't kidding when they say May is Bananas!
Yes! Yes! Yes! We don’t give grades, kids earn their grades. Was a big struggle for me to teach this to the kids this year in 4th grade. And yes, unfortunately I think everyone is just done and not putting much effort in. But we are almost there. Love watching your video!
I’m feeling all the same internal struggles you describe in this vid! 😳 Eleven days left for us, too, and the STRESS is NO JOKE, like the kind of OMG 🤦🏼♀️ that takes more than one glass of wine and the entire super-size chocolate bar. 💯 I teach 7th grade ELA in Wisconsin- students are finishing up their argument essays next week (well, some might be just starting - kidding, not kidding 😂). A girl can dream, right? I’ve been super frustrated by at least half my students...their lack of “stick-to-it-tive-ness” makes me bananas! 🍌 🍌 I have to SOME how learn better to NOT take the blatant disregard for effort and quality in their work PERSONALLY! You’re right, they ARE kids with one foot out the door to summer. I’m trying to keep my inner dragon lady 🐉 tucked in. Thanks for keeping it real - loved hearing this today! Happy end-of-year! All the best fellow caffeinated crazy person (I mean that in the best way). 😊
I just ended my first year back after a SAHM hiatus. I taught all freshmen, and that will continue next year. I’ll miss teaching some of the same things now that you’ll have sophomores and seniors!
First! My school year ended Friday. It's been rough. The kids are over it! But I'm pressing forward. I gave a project too. Some gave me their best and like you said...others were half assed...so I graded accordingly. I hate doing projects at the end of the year but this grade is necessary for the child who is borderline passing.
So glad I found your channel, I just finished student teaching and had a similar situation with students just not taking a big thing I created seriously and I found myself really taking it personally at first and being disappointed. So I felt this one as I had to learn to take a step back and learn and grow with my students through the process and its good to see that other teacher who has been doing this longer than I go through this too!
School was out on May, 24, 2019. This teacher had to fight to give a test with all the confusion and interruptions from students, administrators 😡 and students trying to have a revolution not to take their final test on Classical, Romantic and 20th-21st century music history. I was pissed. They took their test and I was done. I was completely over it especially when I was asked at the last minute to announce honors day awards. However I kept my sanity and made it through. I completely understand when teachers are offended. I was definitely over it but those grades went into the grade book. Oh no, those grades always go in the grade book. 😏
Kimberly Geter That makes me sad. I’m in an incoming senior with plans to go to school for classical voice and opera, and I would kill to have a final on that content. I hope you don’t have to go through this again next year.
Me neither. I wish you success in your endeavors. If I might add, I would consider majoring in voice and opera studies and add-on to get music education certification. It’s cheaper and faster to finish with a music education degree. However if you want to perform, I recommend pursuing your passion and add-on the certification. The performance degree has more languages, diction, and movement classes plus that’s what you want. I teach at a performing arts school and although I enjoy my job, I still had to put up with nonsense at times. Definitely let me know how it all worked out for you. +The Caffeinated Classroom Mrs. Mari , I'd much rather you wait and gather your thoughts and come to peace then because you might wind up doing something that may heat up the students when they have other things on their mind as well and then having to face their anger and de escalate that . I always like to put it like this . Don't try to fill overstuffed suitcases or they will not close and whatever is in them is going to come out anyway , well the same thing goes for teaching things into students . Back when I was an autistic student in school , when I had other things on my mind that did not include what My Teachers wanted me to focus on they had to learn the hard way to come around to me and then I wound up coming around to them a little . However to your students , I was made to do some unpopular and taxing activities and assignments and Yes , I got upset with My Teachers and they got put down a notch or two and I got off task at times but I still did what I had to do and earned my way up . I would much rather you exercise tough love and give them what they have earned versus trying to worry about getting them to 100 percent if you will . Hang in there beautiful . - Dwight

Imagine 8th graders!!! I understand how you feel!!
I try so hard to instill the idea of earning a grade even in fifth grade. I feel really strict, but I want to set them up for success later as well!
