Pure and Easy- The Who (Guitar Cover) Who's Next/Lifehouse Outtake

- I'm covering this song in honor of the new Who's Next/Lifehouse super deluxe box set release. Available today!
Pure and Easy was supposed to be the centerpiece of Pete Townshend's rock opera, Lifehouse. It was recorded early in the Lifehouse sessions at New York's Record Plant studios, and wasn't released until their outtakes compilation Odds and Sods (1974). The Who abandoned the Lifehouse concept, instead releasing a single LP Who's Next (1971)
During these early sessions, Pete was still using his Gibson SG Special. He started using one in late 1968, on Tommy and Live at Leeds. In 1971, Joe Walsh gifted Pete a Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120. He used this guitar on the entire Who's Next album
This makes Pure and Easy one of the last songs where Pete used an SG Special in the studio. I'm using my real 1970 SG Special for this cover!
Pete used a Guild F-612 12-string acoustic. I'm using my 1967 Gibson B-25-12 acoustic here
For amps, he was still using Hiwatts in the studio. When Joe Walsh gave Pete the Gretsch 6120, he also gave him a Fender Tweed Bandmaster, which was also used exclusively on Who's Next
My Gear:
1970 Gibson SG Special
1967 Gibson B-25-12
Analogman King of Tone
1965 Fender Bassman
Neumann TLM-103

My second favourite band after The Beatles
Me too

Great job Sam. More Who would be great.
The Who is such a underrated band😭
Criminally
Royally
On s en fiche... nous on sait qu ils sont ce qu il s est fait de mieux !
Tant pis pour les autres!
Pete always had an incredible balance of acoustic and electric blending just right. This was fantastic Sam...really well done.
I really enjoyed that, Sam. Pure and Easy is one of my favorite Who songs and an often overlooked and underrated gem. Odds and Sods is such a great collection of Who music.
Love the way the acoustic and electric kind of "take turns" being lead or rhythm and then come together at certain parts. One of the favorite parts of The Who (and Pete Townshend's songwriting in general) is the way the instruments are orchestrated and this is a great example of that!
Agreed!
Great cover, I have subscribed 😄
I really need to give The Who a proper listen
The genius of Townshend, very well interpreted by you! Congrats! As always!!
A. I love this song as I did in the late summer of 1971 when it was released. B. I had a ‘68 walnut SG special just like this. C. This shows the underrated guitar work and writing of Pete. D. You play it so well! E. Only an SG special can nail that sound.
Keep up the good work sam!!!
great
Well done, Sam! You're a great guitarist! 👍
Leslie West from Mountain actually played the 12 string on that particular recording!
Really? I knew Leslie was in those New York sessions but not this one
@@sampopkin This isn't the New York one?
Great job man!
Would love to see the Young Vic live version though! My personal favorite. 🍻
Can’t do a gear there and everywhere with this band cause their gear was everywhere at the end of every show 😂 Keith’s kit (Broken) Pete’s Guitar (broken) Rogers mic (thrown into the crowd) John’s bass (immaculate and put back in its case)👍🏻
Exactly haha. Although I could talk Pete’s gear all day long
Awesome tribute to a stellar band/album. Great choice!
That was incredible man. Would love to hear you do the entire album, but ‘Water’ and ‘Naked Eye’ first haha!
Brilliant. Always loved this track from Odds and Sods.
Great cover. I also believe Pete released a version of Pure And Easy on his first solo album Who Came First in 1972.
He did!
An absolute masterpiece. Such great material on it. Let’s See Action, Sheraton Gibson, Evolution, an incredible cover of “There’s a Heartache Following Me.”
Very nicely done!
The SG Special is such a great guitar! My '99 SG Special is the best guitar I've ever had or played.
Sick man
Most underrated The Who song and one of my favorites. It's a shame it isn't on any of their studio albums, but then The Who got so many great unused songs, especially in this era, that you could fill 3 albums worth of tracks. Nice job, would love to see you doing Young Man Blues or I Can See For Miles.
Great job! Only thing missing was the windmilling arm!😂
The SG P90 years. My favourite Who era. Great video. Fantastic tone on the SG too.
I much prefer this version over the Odds and Sods version. Everything's a lot clearer, and you've got all able singers in the chorus at the end.
Same!
This is brilliant. The electric guitar at the end is pure Townsend. Nice work!
Absolutely amazing! I always feel that Pete Townsend gets lost in the shuffle of great guitarists. You really do PT justice.
Your SG always gets amazing sounds
Nailed it, Sam!!🥵🥵👍Out In The Streets one day?😜🙃
Absolutely Fantastic! Haven’t heard this song in ages, now I wanna pull out my Odds and Sods album! Love to see some Quadrophenia songs some day. Brilliant playing on that album.
🤘🔥
One of my dad's favourite bands. The electric and acoustic guitar go together so well. The 12 string has that sort of resonating electric sound, despite being acoustic, making a good accompaniment. Good job Sam 👏
I asked Bobby Dylan I asked the Beatles I asked Timothy Leary but he couldn't tell me either. The Seeker I hope is next
sounds amazing! sadly i don't know much about any of its band members 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Do ,, my generation,,
Are the P90’s on your SG flush mounted to the body without ability to raise them without modifying? I just got a ‘63 SG Special Custom Shop and the neck pickup is significantly louder than the bridge despite being lower. Loosening the screws on the bridge pup doesn’t raise it. I’ve read that this is true to how they made them in the 1960’s. People on internet mention putting foam or springs under the pups so they can be raised. Have you done anything with yours to allow adjustments? Unscrewing the pole piece screws is not ideal because it moves the pole away from the coil. Pole height should only be raised minimally (1/2 to 1 turn) above flush to cover and follow the neck radius. Best tone is obtained by raising whole pup height which I can’t do. My SG sounds pretty good, but the volume balance is way off.
It’s been awhile, but I believe I was able to raise and lower the p90’s with the side screws with ease. But regardless, adjusting the individual pole piece height is a common trick and doesn’t harm the tone in any way. Just helps you get a more balanced tone across the strings
If you see closeups of Lennon’s casino, he had the pole pieces raised pretty high
This is where I got my information on P90 setup: ua-cam.com/video/d3FVkGy8SiQ/v-deo.htmlsi=aXPWYwcLV1i66J-p
