- A easy upgrade but it does require slight modification of your shifter shaft so that you can switch from the OE side button shift knob to the newer front button shift knob

I stuck a flat blade screwdriver inside the shifter to push the lever up, that way you can heat up more of the rod and get a nice twist, I used a large shifting spanner and tightened it up and used that to twist it, that way it keeps the whole top part square. Set the temp gun to around 400 deg C for best results. Also the trims comes in from behind and locks in from underneath, not from the top, that's why you had so much trouble getting it back on.

I really wanted to upgrade my jetta variant, but I couldn't find any information here.
my only concern with doing this is that someday that blue plastic piece will break and leave me or a family member stranded. how is it holding up so far?

Actually went much easier than I expected. It all went together without issue and the new boot fits well.
I just did it yesterday, after 4 months.
It looks muuch harder than it really is.

Just did this. Had the plastic shaft twisted good. When it all cooled off I put on the new knop and the plastic shaft broked.
Anyone know how I can get a new plastic shaft?
You have to get a whole new shifter assembly. I bought my car and it was broke. Went to the junk yard and grabbed one. Plug and play but it’s a pain to change em out. It goes in through the bottom of the car

You may have to really put some muscle into pulling it off, in this video it looks easy, but the first time it was extremely difficult.
Hi! Great video! How has the shift mod held after install? Have you had any issues with the blue piece bending back or becoming unlatched? Also, can you recommend what kind of wrap to purchase? Your dash pieces look super clean!
Since the shift rod was heated, twisted and let cool, it won't revert to its original shape. While I am no where close to being a subject matter expert on vinyl wrap, I have tried some cheap wrap and those will stretch/deform, tear and don't adhere well. I went with recommendations by professional automobile wrappers, there are several major brands that they use, 3M being one of them. I used the 3M carbon fiber wrap, it is very good, does not deform and adheres well. It is thick, so wrapping it around sharp pointed areas can be problematic, it it doable, just takes more time. You will need a heat gun and associated plastic wrap tools, again I used 3M tools, same ones professional wrappers use and of course Xacto knives with plenty of blades.
is it possible to just buy a universal shift knob with the button on top and be able to use it that way or does it need the pin to go in a certain way
If you don't want to modify your shifter shaft for a MK6 shift knob, there are plenty of MK5 knobs available but nothing as nice as the MK6 knobs.
does the plastic twist easy is it fragile
No it actually does not twist easy. It seems to be a heavy duty plastic but with any plastic, you have to be very careful using heat. Just want enough so you can rotate the plastic, not melt it or compromise it. Patience is key.
Where did you buy all your carbon fiber parts ??
The shift knob and boot came from Alibaba. If your asking about my dash trim, that is a 3M Carbon Fiber vinyl wrap
