A director being asked to do a Marvel movie is like being given the keys to a beautiful Ferrari, only to be told you can't drive over 40, and getting pulled over and fined on trumped up charges at every block. It's impossible to enjoy the experience.
That's actually the perfect metaphor. From what I've read, the directors are basically able to shoot what they want but the movie gets ripped from them in post-production, where its standardized to fit the Marvel formula. The cinematic universe concept was interesting in the beginning and good for a solid decade, but I think it's time to retire it if it means that all films need to adhere to a specific standard that disallows weirdness or interesting ideas.
@@Syntopikon Weirdness is a good thing, as it can foster or express originality-though I believe one type of weirdness has been substituted for another. The autonomy for directors to tell the story they want to tell has been hijacked by the studios which have incorporated DEI in their business model. It's gotten to the point where the director has no say in what actors he wants for his movie, as they may be the "wrong" color, gender, or must cater to another quota of diversity or inclusion. The quality control is no longer in the hands of the director, as studios give directors unrealistic timeframes to adequately render special effects, and enforce stipulations on script and characters which will in turn devastate the project. The goal by studios has been to virtue signal rather than to entertain, which self-destructive, akin to a sick person drinking poison in the hopes kill their disease. It's not a sustainable business model, and it's only a matter of time before shareholders either jump ship and tank the stock or sue their incompetent asses.

The assembly cut of Alien3 adds a lot to the film. Not quite a director's cut, but in many ways, it's much better than the theatrical release. I like this move a lot. It's deeply flawed, but it oozes atmosphere. It could've been a solid movie with a better script and if the studio had given David Fincher a bit more free rein.
Yup. I think the studio miscalculated in hiring Fincher - but from the standpoint that they seemed to think that maybe he was to young to entrust with such a production. Cameron at least had the success of Terminator to go off of, while this was Fincher's first feature. Maybe Fincher will come around eventually and do his own director's cut which is more in line with his vision, though that might be a long ways away.
He can't make a director's cut because there was never a film made to his vision in the first place. It's not like he put a cut together that they changed- they interfered to such a level during shooting that it was never his film, they essentially wanted him to be a journeyman director rather than an auteur. He will never work on a new cut and he will never produce a commentary- he barely talks about it almost 35 years later.
Another example I can think of movies that directors hated making was Peter Jackson with the hobbit trilogy. Guillermo Del Toro was originally going to direct the trilogy with Jackson being involved as a producer, but Del Toro left the project and thus Jackson was forced to direct the trilogy. He didn’t have any time to think of the concepts because his vision for the trilogy was different than what Del Toro had in mind. From what I’ve seen for behind-the-scenes footage, it really is obvious that he just did not want to direct the trilogy. I think it played a major role as to why he doesn’t really direct films anymore and instead focuses more on documentaries.
About the "Patty Jenkins vs Marvel Creative Comitee" situation, the "merch sales" stuff was because Ike Perlmutter, who complained that women or non white superheroes didn't sell toys, which is why we had to wait years for a Black Widow movie. In fact, Kevin Feige almost quit Marvel because he disliked Perlmutter ideas, and Bob Iger ended up firing Perlmutter and giving Feige full control over the company. That doesn't mean Kevin has no mistakes (cof Captain Marvel films cof)
The Piranha 2 director's cut isn't a rumor. It was released on VHS and laserdisc and is 10 minutes shorter than the theatrical cut. Someone uploaded it on UA-cam.
I think the issue with Dune is more that while it had a difficult production, I don't think Lynch hated the making of its so much as he hated what happened afterwards - namely, that he didn't final cut, which I believe he's gotten on every movie afterward.
Putting Ryan Coogler as one of the directors that Marvel has screwed up is weird, considering that his Black Panther films are probably some of the few that feel more "authentic" alongside James Gunn' GOTG, and he seems to be happy with his work. Cases like Nia Da Costa's work on The Marvels feels more accurate to the "Kevin Feige and other produces taking out the film from the director and screwing up a pottentially better movie"
At the very least, most of them never want to work with Marvel again (unless the paycheck is really nice or they don't seem to care much about imprinting their own vision on the movie)

With Fincher, I get what he wanted to achieve with with Alien 3, but killing Hicks and the little girl from the second movie off screen was an stupid idea that crippled the movie. Joss Whedon is not that great of a writer. He said he only tried to make a great movie, but it felt like he wasn't even trying. Even without the interference from the studio, which was more related to Thor scene and the setting up for phase 3, the movie had too many dumb subplots, it didn't know what it wanted and Ultron, which is one of the most dangerous Marvel villains, was written like a joke. With Fantastic Four, Josh Trank wanted to pull a Nolan. "Look at me, I'm gonna make this super realistic superhero movie". And even without Fox interference, the plot was stupid and the characters were even more stupid and dull. As for Snyder, Warner should've fired him after Batman v Superman.
Good video, but I honestly think you should cut down on the text, it's too fast, so I end up pausing a lot of times it pops up which slows down the pacing of the video drastically, and sometimes the text doesn't line up with what you're saying.

I realized Michael Mann's The Keep is a film that you definitely talk about a cult film disowned by the director. Sadly, I don't think we will ever get DC version of it. Production and post production issues were something I definitely would hate to endure.
If I Were To Hate Making a Movie Myself It'd be Adventures Of The American Rabbit which I tried rewatching but I just can't do It the film was terribly unfunny and the film's animation while not bad per say was nothing compared to Starchaser The Legend Of Orin also the cartoony vibe kinda made me sick and I'm an advocate for Animation especially during recent times animation Is cinema except for this movie

He clashed a lot with the crew at Pinewood Studios and the filming was running very close to the wire - and fell behind at points, to the point that James Horner, who composed the music, only had a couple of weeks to finish the score. It led to a falling out between the two, though they eventually made up before Titanic.

It was also part of a franchise and something of a successful culmination of Phase 1. On the other hand, you had John Carter, which actually cost MORE than Avengers. It was ostensibly an "original" movie - I don't think many people remembered A Princess of Mars, which was published 100 years ago from 2012 and they didn't go with the obvious name. A year after John Carter, The Lone Ranger also failed. I think it was around that point that studios saw the more expensive bets as much more risky if they weren't already part of a major franchise. On one hand, Disney saw all the dollar signs and on the other, a financial boondoggle. So they went all in on the former. 2012 was also when they bought Lucasfilm, roughly half a year after John Carter bombed.

After that, Disney just gave up and realized that the big historic IPs were better to put out, and it did pay off for a good time until in recent times it didn’t.

I felt like I got my money's worth with each movie and would buy most of them on Blu-Ray, too. Their biggest issues were the bloated budgets. If they were made for half (and with how expensive they were thanks to the talents involved, I think it would've been possible if they had different actors) I don't think Disney would've taken it as badly as they did.

In context, I meant that besides Avengers, John Carter was one of the most important movies of 2012, not that Whedon directed it. It was important because it was also a Disney movie (and it cost more than Avengers) but it flopped hard at the box office. There's a strong case to be made that the two movies - Avengers and John Carter - helped inform the overall movie landscape of the last decade, especially in reliance on franchises vs. original films (or films with less resonant IP).

The other ISN'T john Carter. Wheedon had NOTHING to do with that film. When you make such a basic error it makes people wonder if the other stuff is wrong too :/

In context, I meant that besides Avengers, John Carter was one of the most important movies of 2012, not that Whedon directed it. It was important because it was also a Disney movie (and it cost more than Avengers) but it flopped hard at the box office. There's a strong case to be made that the two movies - Avengers and John Carter - helped inform the overall movie landscape of the last decade, especially in reliance on franchises vs. original films (or films with less resonant IP).

It's kinda ironic how James Cameron hated making his directorial debut taking place in the water but would go on to make movies with terrific set pieces involving water that put his stars through a very wet hell.
Right? It's a wild coincidence. In fact, I can't think of a director that works better with water than Cameron.
