In 2003, I saw what had to be millions of lightening bugs/fireflies all over an enormous field of corn one night. The next night, they were gone. The farmers had to protect their corn by crop dusting their corn. Millions of fireflies died in that 24 hour period. I haven’t forgotten that, and it was 20 years ago. I understand why it was done. But it is so sad. I haven’t seen fireflies in that number before or since. 😢
Most the things we don’t have anymore is because there not considered “safe” anymore. It’s almost like kids in today’s generation are living in bubble wrap. It’s sad. I know kids did get hurt on some of these things, but it’s not the end of the world. Getting hurt is a part of life and a learning experience.
They got rid of the fast food playgrounds because they didn't want to get sued. Lobster tanks are being removed because they are too costly to maintain and not a lot of people are buying the lobsters while they are alive. Fun fact: The meat and seafood departments are not allowed to feed them and the only time they eat is when one of them dies in the tank.
The play places probably got too dirty and nowadays i think most kids are playing at home or parks, they probably didnt get much use after the pandemic hit
The real reason why fireflies disappeared are because of urbanization and less trees. But you can see some if you go to forests. But because of urbanization they are at a risk of extinction. Im sad i can't see them anymore. But i and my mom have seen a few in my hometown when i was 8 or so. It was beautiful

The reason that fireflies are disappearing is because kids back then would catch them. (this is not the real reason)
I heard it’s because of the increase in artificial light having a negative impact on them 😢
They think they're making a cool night light. Instead, they were inadvertently c-blocking nature.
