One of the main reasons the first half of the episode feels a bit random is because it's from chapter 64, taking place right after the end of season 1, but the rest of the episode is from like 15 or so chapters later after the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc. They basically just weren't able to fit it in at the end of the first season for time reasons.

Something about seeing the three of them together again is so great. Even Nobara and Yuji who feel sibling-esque in the way they talk to each other lol. And Megumi who's the older brother who's too cool for both of them. There were quite a few moments in S1 with Nobara and Yuji just randomly agreeing and Megumi was off to the side, started literally when they met and wanted to eat sushi. So I love to see them both give Yuji a 10 here without even saying anything lol. Shoe's on the other foot for once. Warms my heart.
Maybe the first half episode and introducing Yuko was just like that (lol). Them showing us a wholesome moment and our lovable trio doing teenage things. Heck surprisingly even Megumi went along with it 😅
The first part wasn't in the manga. I don't know if it was in any of the light novel's, but I think it's anime only to start lightheartedly the knew arc.
First part (with Ozawa) is in the manga, but it happens before the flashback arc, whereas in the anime they moved it afterwards. Yeah, I think it's here to give us a sliver of lightheartedness between the flashback and the Shibuya arcs.
