I. Frelling. Love. Soldier. It's just an excellent movie. Kurt Russel is amazing as Todd, crafting a compelling and loveable character with, as you say, nearly zero dialogue, and not even really changing his facial expressions, either. But he somehow communicates the vulnerability behind a brainwashed killing machine, someone who is incomprehensibly psychologically damaged by his from-birth military training. It's hearing stories like this that just increase my respect for Kurt Russell. That man deserves every ounce of his legend, and then some. Definitely one of the best science fiction films of well, all films. Kurt Russell is a damn great actor, and is one of my all time favorites. Very under-rated film. Kurt Russell's subdued performance with such little dialogue was perfectly executed. My absolute favourite scene in the film is just after he's been banished by the settlement and is left outside, the look of pain in his face from the rejection is haunting. I also love how when asked how he came to be discarded by the military, he merely replies "I was replaced by a superior solider sir". His honesty and delivery of the line really show how well written the character was.
One of my favorite movies of all time. The messaging towards combat veterans like Sledge did at the end of the show "The Pacific" is right there. I have always drawn a direct relationship with this movie and the graphic novel "Rogue Trooper." Such a badass movie
I saw this gem on the BIG SCREEN when it came out. It is a CLASSIC! Kurt Russell is one of the best in the business. Hollywood needs to make more gritty R rated sci-fi movies like this. Enough already with all of the teenybopper bullshit.
I saw this in the theater as a teenager. It was more subdued than I was expecting, much more of a good story than simply a shoot-em-up, and when I heard it didn't do well soon after seeing it, it changed the way I looked at movies. Usually I liked what other people liked, but I began a separation, figuring out what a good movie is to me, to hell with the critics and audiences. This is a great film, and more like it should be made. We just need to do it cheaply. Keep pushing the B movies, Cecil, you're doing the Lord's work.
The work you put in your videos is awesome. I like those parts with the backgroundinformation in all of your videos. So the exploring videos are my favourite :) Oh and lets not forget the jokes. I like them too :)
You didn't mention the connection with Jodorowsky's Dune. Was there one? In the documentary about the failed movie, they mention that the start of Soldier and some of the models were taken from the preparation for it. I don't get it. How can movies like Event Horizon and Soldier be bombs? I love them both dearly. Event Horizon was one of the scariest and well done horror movies ever and Russell's acting in Soldier could be used as acting teaching tool. My favourite scene was when she says "You must feel something?" and he answers "Fear and discipline." "Now?" "Always."
I liked both movies too, Event Horizon and Soldier. I always thought EH was a bit soft for a horror type movie (but I still liked it) but until I saw (in these series of videos) that EH was supposed to have harder content for the gore/Hell scenes then it all made sense... god damn studio interference. Blade Runner never really clicked with me but I do like that it all int he same universe as these two others. Makes me hope for the perfect drama/plot heavy (from Blade Runner), action (from Soldier), horror (from Event Horizon) movie will be made that takes place in the same universe. Maybe something like Todd fights the evils from EH on earth after an experiment in inter-dimensional travel goes horribly wrong.
18 months of training, 15 weeks of shooting, a broken ankle, and an injured foot and the first place he goes after is In n' Out Burger!!! And for those of you who have been to one, you know that makes perfect sense! ;)
Reminds me of what my father told me he did when he first stepped off the plane, after his tour in Vietnam around 1968. Said he went straight to a burger joint, and literally ate 20 cheeseburgers. :-O
I think I saw this years ago but now I’m going to go back and watch it again! I love this channel it’s helping me discover, re-discover, and appreciate movies I’ve never seen, already loved, or need to go back and watch again! Fantastic
I remember seeing this movie as a kid. I still love it to this day. I'm glade that they fought so hard to keep certain scenes in it as it added to the realistic feel to the program. After what would make a better soldier than a soldier who never questions his superiors orders. It really is a great movie.
Wow never knew these existed in the same universe. I think I'd be cool to see some sort or sequel to this with a possible mix with the Blade Runner follow up.
An underrated MASTERPIECE........one of my faves.......I always watch "BLADERUNNER", "EVENT HORIZON" and "SOLDIER" in one sitting as the movies DO sync up nicely.....thank you for reviewing this neglected gem.
Such an underrated sci-fi movie and one of my favorite films of all time. It's a shame it didn't do better. Kurt Russel pleasantly surprised me in his role not to mention how utterly intimidating and bad ass he was. And who couldn't love having Jason Scott Lee in it as well?
Great stuff, as always. "Exploring" is definitely my favorite series you do. Few, besides those who worked on the projects themselves, give so much interesting information about films like these.
All those little details and whatnot are just another part of why Soldier is one of my favorites. Seen tons of movies and I'd say it's around the top 30 or so.
Wow. I was leery going into this (channel), 'cause of the name and intro. I thought it would be dumb take on a movie I already liked. But - it wasn't dumb. It was actually a pure information dump. I was not expecting that based on the channel name. And, I love it. I had no idea this was in (or supposed to be in) the Blade Runner universe - and that is so much better and makes so much more timeline sense than the Alien movies being in that universe (a thing, supposedly, if you didn't know). This was great. Thank you, creators, for making it. This video made me happy.
I saw this movie in the day room in jail. It was a huge hit. I expected it was a hit on the outs, too, but when I got out it seemed no one had seen or even heard of it. Such a shame. You could have gone a bit more into the damn fine relationship the film developed between TODD and his adoptive family. Other than that you pretty much nailed it. If only Anderson's earlier, and IMO more genuine, films had gotten the appreciation they deserved he perhaps wouldn't be such a corporate/studio stooge today.
OMFG, thank you guys for answering a question I've had ever since watching this, whether or not young Todd was related to Kurt Russell because he looks just like him! lol
This is the first good bad flicks video I watched a 2 years ago. The blade runner world, the nerdy references to video games and other movies from Kurt pass, everything! Now that I know the thought that was put into this, I appreciate the movie even more now. First video I watched on this channel and I immediately subscribed right after.
It has been one of those movies that you get an urge to watch every few years. This was a great narration too. Loved the references in his Soldier BIO. Never caught that.
Man, this movie was so well planned, down to all the details: Protecting actors, securing sets properly, and flexible enough to rework the entire schedule when the main actor in an action film tripped during a gardening scene and broke his ankle haha. I loved this film when I was young, it was just so badass
Not a bad action flick overall. Who knew so much raw emotion could be conveyed with Kurt Russell's lack of facial expressions or from not saying anything. Just through the intensity in his eyes and through his actions. In this case, actions truly speaks louder than words.
And also the scene where he gets kicked out of the colony, and is holed up inside some wreckage, and all of a sudden he realizes that tears are going down his face, and he's utterly confused, and sad, at the same time.
This was as close to a movie about the Halo games that I could get. And I loved it. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it that this recap was just fantastic. Thanks!
The amount of references here is insane! Seems like there are some early Kurt movies I have to catch up on. Also, the fact that Russell spent 18 months in the gym pales in comparison to the ridiculousness of Chris Bale allegedly transitioning from the Machinist to Batman in only 6! Although, I can't blame anyone for not attempting that. Love this channel, btw. This is better than the Behind-the-Scenes on any DVD.
After watching this I had to watch the movie... and was it good. Yes the CGI is a bit dated but very limited, the sets are very cool and filled with Easter eggs. And even though he barely speaks, i really liked Todd as a main character. Thanks a lot for enlightening me on the existence of this hidden masterpiece.
Cecil, I've been a loyal fan for years, your knowledge of movies blows my mind, I'm a young filmmaker at a magnet school and I've sourced you as my inspiration for watching underground movies like these, keep up the great work!
definitely the best movie review channel on UA-cam, you pick some great movies, the commentary is top notch, the research is also up there, I can binge the hell out of this channel more than anything on YT.
This is why I love your channel! All the oodles of tidbit of info I didn't know about this film! I like how this movie is tied into Bladerunner and has parts of the Lewis and Clark ship on the planet. I remember seeing this before I went to work (I had a very cool boss) because I didn't have anything to do at work, so this movie interested me. I thought it just flew under the radar and it was underrated by most critics. I think I have this on my DVR but I need to get it on BD if available.
My sister had surgery and was recuperating at her best friend N home. Before N husband returned from iraq we women laughed and had a generally good time. Her husband S came home. Having ptsd from a horror of a childhood, I watched silently whilst playing his favorite music on the guitar and making him laugh. The second night I couldn't sleep and he and I were silent with heaviness. I felt it so much it was as if the living room was filled with our untold stories that couldn't be shared. His sharper and closer. He wasn't new to war. He was a marine since Bosnia. Anyway, Soldier came on the TV. We both watched. No noise between us just this comradery of silence. I understood the movie and felt as if I were watching myself as well as S in the character Todd. Since that strange night, there was an indefinable friendship between us. It was a form of love that comes with respect. Not romantic. I've never forgotten that night. It has always stayed with me. Soldier conveys more than just a soldier's ptsd. It is a film that I need regularly.
Mr.Russel is the Goat, The Thing , Big trouble in little China , Escape from Nyc/L.a , Tombstone, Stargate, Soldier , Tango & Cash , Backdraft , Bone Tomahawk etc just love is work .
Again, like Dredd, NOT a "good bad flick". This is just a brilliant movie. Hugely under-rated, and mostly ignored at the time and quickly forgotten after. But it is pure quality all the way.
I remember watching this multiple times on TV as a teenager, and got a kick out of telling people they should watch the sequel to Blade Runner. Then an actual sequel to Blade Runner came out and, well... I still tell people they should watch Soldier.
I loved this film. The soundtrack was great. The weapons and vehicles were very unique and I still remember them to this day. The movie was overflowing with easter egg references to other films.
to me Soldier is the perfect rainy fall saturday afternoon movie. every november when the weather turns here in MN i seem to end up watching it. it is just a solid film with solid acting, and good story telling. it has its faults for sure, but nothing you can't forgive, the pros outweigh the cons.
Kurt gave an excellent performance, conveying emotion without speaking. One of his best. I love this film. The "Bladerunner" connection clarifies their use of White Zombie's "More Human Than Human" song for the TV trailers, since the title of the song is taken from that line in "Bladerunner". That's an Easter egg I wasn't aware of until viewing this video,so thanks for the insight!
This is one of my favorites, too. I own it on DVD and pop it in the player every so often and really enjoy it. Russell is great and so is the whole cast.
This is one of the best damn movies out there. Kurt Russell's performance is amazing because so much of it isn't verbal. His character's emotions are suppressed but you read them through Russell's eyes and physical expressions.
I remember reading an interview with Jason Scott Lee in Black Belt magazine that got me pumped to see this movie... but it was an old issue at the library and I discovered the movie had already come and gone from theaters. I loved it once I finally tracked down a copy.

I saw this gem on the BIG SCREEN when it came out. It is a CLASSIC! Kurt Russell is one of the best in the business. Hollywood needs to make more gritty R rated sci-fi movies like this. Enough already with all of the teenybopper bullshit.
we will probably get more R rated genre films after the successes of Fury Road and Deadpool
There was a lot of these type of movies in the 90’s. We do need more of these kind of hard movies these days.
I'm doing my part :)
The work you put in your videos is awesome.
I like those parts with the backgroundinformation in all of your videos.
So the exploring videos are my favourite :)
Oh and lets not forget the jokes. I like them too :)
Thanks! :)
I still feel the Soldier program inspired the SPARTAN-II program in Halo.
Yep, it's the only thing I missed about California when I lived there briefly. God I'd love to have a Double Double right now.
I don't get it.
It means he's a glutton for punishment. In n' Out is over-hyped. I'd rather have Whataburger.
meanwhile wahmen today to a set of yoga for a few weeks and think they are in shape for an action movie role.
Totally agree: Soldier is awesome! Great video, mate!
+oberstul Thanks!
I think I saw this years ago but now I’m going to go back and watch it again! I love this channel it’s helping me discover, re-discover, and appreciate movies I’ve never seen, already loved, or need to go back and watch again! Fantastic
Highly underrated movie
IMO this is easily one of the best action movies of the 90's. Probably #2 for me just under The Matrix.
+Trickier Hades Yep! Me too.
I love the background and fast-firing nature of the facts.
All those little details and whatnot are just another part of why Soldier is one of my favorites. Seen tons of movies and I'd say it's around the top 30 or so.
still one of my all-time favorites, I could watch the chain fight scene all day!
You are very welcome!
I love this movie, its rambo in space. Shame it went straight to DvD in the UK i would have loved to see this on the big screen. I still watch it.
Awesome, thank you! :)
I love this film! One of Russell's best.
Lovely sci fi flick.
The production level was absolutely mind blowing.
nice recap - havent seen this movie in ages
It has been one of those movies that you get an urge to watch every few years. This was a great narration too. Loved the references in his Soldier BIO. Never caught that.
I've always loved this movie.
Man, this movie was so well planned, down to all the details: Protecting actors, securing sets properly, and flexible enough to rework the entire schedule when the main actor in an action film tripped during a gardening scene and broke his ankle haha.
I loved this film when I was young, it was just so badass
Man I loved Soldier. Glad it came out before internet critics ruined everything.
Non internet critics buried this fine movie : )
Not a bad action flick overall. Who knew so much raw emotion could be conveyed with Kurt Russell's lack of facial expressions or from not saying anything. Just through the intensity in his eyes and through his actions. In this case, actions truly speaks louder than words.
And also the scene where he gets kicked out of the colony, and is holed up inside some wreckage, and all of a sudden he realizes that tears are going down his face, and he's utterly confused, and sad, at the same time.
I love this series. Always so well researched. Great Job!
This was as close to a movie about the Halo games that I could get.
And I loved it. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it that this recap was just fantastic. Thanks!
I love Soldier
Thanks for watching!
Marcedus
i think the CGI looks amazing for its time
Cecil, I've been a loyal fan for years, your knowledge of movies blows my mind, I'm a young filmmaker at a magnet school and I've sourced you as my inspiration for watching underground movies like these, keep up the great work!
wait...they used the looney tunes' bomb to blow up the planet.
most effective weapon, if you ask me
It’s in the acme catalog between the rocket skates and the giant slingshot
Trust the Acme corporation. Unless you're a coyote. A cartoon coyote.
definitely the best movie review channel on UA-cam, you pick some great movies, the commentary is top notch, the research is also up there, I can binge the hell out of this channel more than anything on YT.
Thank you so much!
Soldier was not a bomb. It was the bomb. Don’t fuck with my childhood.
+BornslippyZ Thank you!
Loved the video! Soldier was one of my favourite movies growing up. Never noticed all the references. Awesome.
The explanation of his stats scene and all the easter eggs makes this movie that much more badass.
Hold on - Gary Busey is usually type cast for unhinged characters?
How surprising.
I absolutely love this movie. It was one of my favorites as a kid since I was so huge into sci-fi and dystopian settings.
Underrated movie
I have always enjoyed this film
Mr.Russel is the Goat, The Thing , Big trouble in little China , Escape from Nyc/L.a , Tombstone, Stargate, Soldier , Tango & Cash , Backdraft , Bone Tomahawk etc just love is work .
Again, like Dredd, NOT a "good bad flick".
This is just a brilliant movie. Hugely under-rated, and mostly ignored at the time and quickly forgotten after.
But it is pure quality all the way.
I need to see this. Paul WS Anderson is a super underrated director. Mortal Kombat, DOA, Death Race, the dude gets nowhere near the love he deserves.
Ninjas in Spaaaaaccceeee!
warframe!
can you imagine a warframe movie? that would be awesome.
SeraphimRoad hello fellow Tenno
I remember watching this multiple times on TV as a teenager, and got a kick out of telling people they should watch the sequel to Blade Runner. Then an actual sequel to Blade Runner came out and, well... I still tell people they should watch Soldier.
I loved this movie, to me it is a good classic that did poorly.
I loved this film. The soundtrack was great. The weapons and vehicles were very unique and I still remember them to this day. The movie was overflowing with easter egg references to other films.
I love Soldier, but then I like everything with Kurt Russell in it.
to me Soldier is the perfect rainy fall saturday afternoon movie. every november when the weather turns here in MN i seem to end up watching it. it is just a solid film with solid acting, and good story telling. it has its faults for sure, but nothing you can't forgive, the pros outweigh the cons.
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to kill them all, sir."
Definitely one of the best lines ever. Gives me chills every time
Kurt gave an excellent performance, conveying emotion without speaking.
Theres actually a Videogame with Ninjas in Space, its called Warframe
Warframe: The Movie perhaps?
I want that movie.
1:05 what you're describing sounds like the Unsullied...
"poisonous snakes" = venemous snakes.
All man I can’t get enough of your Good Bad Flicks!! Need more!!
If you don't think Soldier is a good movie, sorry, we can't be friends.
This is one of my favorites, too. I own it on DVD and pop it in the player every so often and really enjoy it. Russell is great and so is the whole cast.
I fucking loved this movie when it came out. Still holds up!
I'm going to kill them all, Sir.
Edit: I typed that line before you showed it 😂
This is one of the best damn movies out there. Kurt Russell's performance is amazing because so much of it isn't verbal. His character's emotions are suppressed but you read them through Russell's eyes and physical expressions.
Fear and discipline...
That how i raise my Kids, anyway ;-)
I remember reading an interview with Jason Scott Lee in Black Belt magazine that got me pumped to see this movie... but it was an old issue at the library and I discovered the movie had already come and gone from theaters. I loved it once I finally tracked down a copy.
like i commented in another video, i love how u go into how shit was was filmed bc dude, windup toys under baby dolls to make them move is simple ingenuity that is so interesting to me
Thanks! I think its important to show how much work goes into these movies and the stories of how they came to be. :)
Found this movie thanks to you and it instantly jumped to my "watch at least once a year" list in the company of Robocop, Terminator 1 and 2, Alien and Aliens, Starship Troopers and a few others.
