My grandmother was the senior executive secretary for a large insurance company from the late 40s until 1980. She oversaw a secretary pool that handled all of the agents. She was kinda like Joan from Mad Men. Not viscous (LOL) but no-nonsense. All the women in her division were sharply dressed with their hair done, makeup, and high heels. She made sure things got done right and on time! She was highly respected by everyone including the "Suits". As a kid, I remember going to the office with her sometimes and all the he secretaries had this device. I was always amazed how fast she could type, talk on the phone and look at me while typing, never looking at her keyboard! I loved her so much and with me being the only grandson, I "walked on water" in her eyes. She's been gone for 35 years. I miss her and still think of her.
Videos like this make me appreciate modern things that we take for granted, in this case Bluetooth headsets and speaker phone and just being cordless in general and not even having to be by the actual phone to talk on it. Most people today, especially those younger than 25, would lose their shit if we had to go back to one phone per household and you had to actually hold the phone to your ear in ONE ROOM ONLY to talk to people.
Oh yes! I remember how exciting it was when my mom got 10 foot cord for our wall phone. We could reach the other room for private conversations. Remember when we had to ask permission to make a phone call?
@@Poppy- I’m not quite old enough to remember rotary phones but I remember having one phone with a long cord on a little cubby hole in our tiny ass hall if you could even call it a hall (it was barely 3’ x 5’). Going cordless was like a miracle. My mama still has her tiny little rolodex of phone numbers that no longer work.
I have a landline. Only for emergencies, since we had a blackout yrs ago and the cell towers couldn't keep up with all the calls. My youngest uses it because I don't allow my kids to have a cell phone unless they can prove they are responsible and trustworthy. She is my sneaky one...lol I have a super long cord from back in the day when we had AOL dialup and I had a first generation laptop... Hahaha She has no idea that we have that as an option. I won't put it on the phone cuz I'm totally fine with her having to stand in one room while chatting with her friends 😂.
We had one on our phone in the kitchen when I was little! I'm 61 so that would have been in the 60's! I love all the things you bring back! Are you going to do some Christmas themed vintage items?
If you put your phone behind you, on the dresser, so the phone wire could come under your right arm, could maybe help, wouldn't get in your way, as you iron X
I'm the same age (born when the U.S. flag had 49 stars). Grandma had one of these on her home phone (505) until it was changed out for a Trimline in the mid 1970s. Her number was CI (Citrus) 3-3243 in Glendale 8, Calif.
This might sound funny, but have used the exact same vintage iron my mom used and grew up using. Those vintage irons do get super hot but they can put a razor sharp crease on a shirt sleeve in a heartbeat.
Black and Decker makes an iron called The Classic. It’s heavy like vintage irons were and gets hot, but not to the point of burning holes in the ironing board. It’s modern with a vintage feel. Hope this helps. When you used your nail to unscrew and screw the screw, all I could hear is my nail lady telling me that my nails were “ jewels not tools”! LOL 😆 Loving the hair! Great video and thanks for sharing!
We had a red rotary phone like that when I was growing up. I kind of miss them, although I wouldn't want to give up the convenience of my cell phone, but...aesthetics! Also, I love how all your kitties are demanding air time now, lol
I love to see you talking on the phone and ironing! I grew up in the fifties and I remember my mom having a sprinkling bottle to sprinkle the clothes with. Then she put them in a bag or pillowcase and in the fridge until she ironed them. I also have a vintage black rotary phone that belonged to my aunt! Fun memories!
My mom had a sprinkle top that she could fit on an old Barq's pop bottle. We would use it to sprinkle water on the clothes, especially my Dad's dress shirts and handkerchiefs. He had his back handkerchief and his dress handkerchief.
We had those phones when I was a kid. They were usually in the kitchen where women did cooking. My mom would be on her phone doing dishes but the cord was STRETCHED over the stove where it burned. We had to wait for mom to call the phone company to bring out a new cord. The cord regularly got ruined and you were w/o a phone while waiting on the new cord!
I used that shoulder rest on my work phone for a few decades; I retired in 2003 and used it to my last day. It made things so simple because I could answer the phone, make a computer inquiry, or reach across my desk for a report, or take notes, all while the phone remained secure and I had two hands free. No crick in my neck from trying to hold the receiver between neck and shoulder. It never occurred to me to use it at home, lol.
I have my grandmother's Sunbeam steam iron from the late 50's. I haven't used it in a long time, but remember it is heavier then the newer ones. It had a back plate that got bent and I remember things always got hung up on it.
I've just found this channel and I'm so glad I did. My house (or rather farm-house) was built about a hundred plus years ago- nothing really changed, and I live like a man in the 1940s- about a decade earlier :) It makes me happy that others are interested in history and historic clothing, and it excites me to see that others would like to live like I do, living history every day regardless of what year it currently is. Cheers! I hope you have a nice weekend!
I have used a Black& Decker Classic Steam Iron all of my life. Originally in the late 80s, my grandma gave me her old iron and it was exactly this one from the 60s. They can be found on Amazon new so they won't ruin your clothes and you will have the vintage look. The Tele-Rest, oh yes! LOL! I am showing my age but I remember when I had my first office jobs in the 80s and they had these in many offices. My Grandma had one too. They were great for typing but kind of annoying for a short phone call when you did not need it.
A good idea for an iron for you would be the Black and Decker Classic Iron. Its a modern iron so it has all the safety, and has steam, but it's styled after a 50's iron. I have one and love it. Fits right in with my vintage sewing things. I got mine at walmart but its on Amazon too.
I've been binge watching all your viedos and your gadgets. I'm totally obsessed. I've watched other vintage content from different creaters and your so lively and by far the best. I'm so in love with this time period and you have inspired me. Thank you.
Greetings, Laci! Fellow vintage lifestyler here. I recommend getting an X-Link device so you can use your rotary phone. The gadget pairs whatever landline it's connected to with a cellphone by Bluetooth so whenever you're in range you can both make and receive calls from the landline. I use it on my antique candlestick phone and it works just fine. I have had exactly the same experience with vintage travel irons heating up to the scorching point and beyond. For a vintage aesthetic iron, I recommend the Black & Decker classic. It's a fantastic iron. I've used mine for about six years almost daily.
I used to see those all the time. They were everywhere. Receptionists typing in forms, in the bank , school office, where ever someone needed 2 hands to write stuff down usually.
Great gadget! I've seen them before. I knew lots of people including my family who had extra long cords on the phones and the hand set just so they could walk about and do chores while talking on the phone! LOL!
I found some awesome irons from my family's shed that get hot by being placed on a wood stove or by loading coals in the iron. So awesome! At least 19th century, I would guess.
I remember people having this device, but it was usually more for businesses. I had to demonstrate how to use one on a visit to a museum with my students because the docent/tour guide didn't know what it was or how to use it (along with a vintage adding machine with handle). When I went to work with my dad on Saturday's I would play with the "old" equipment still in the office storage closet.
LACI FAY! I went to an estate sale where it seemed the house was stuck in mid-century glamour. The lady had just died. EVERYTHING WORKED in her house! Her 1950s couch--to die for! I don't think they sold that couch, though. And they had this men's Hawaiian shirt for only $40.00, reduced by half the next day.
@@eileentheequeen I bought a hat from a local ladies department store called Ruth's. The hatbox came with it, for $2.50. It was almost pristine. A lot of scarves and sewing samples (of course, she sewed!). The couch was $541, half-price the next day. It's probably still sitting in the house. And, no, even though I loved it--my house is already overstuffed with furniture. The house, itself, is for sale. Her kids don't want to move back.
My mom had a similar one on the wall phone in the kitchen. She ordered a extra long cord so she could move around the kitchen while she talked. Enjoy your videos very much…the 50’s are my favorite decade. Almost all of the products back then were made in the USA not China.
We had this type gadget back in the 80's for our home phone and even back at my first office job. I had no idea it was invented so many years before though... how crazy.
Great little gadget ,,I seem to remember these lol,,, lots of fun video ,always cheery ,,look forward to more and may be Christmas pretty things,❤️❤️❤️

This looks awesome! Nice test and glad it did work out for you. Some of those old irons gets SUPER hot, I remember being scared of my grandmothers. Good luck on your hunt.
I've had tons of jobs where I've had to be on the phone. Thankfully I've also had modern headsets, but I can see where that would have been an amazing gadget to have 😊 Very cute kitty BTW 😊
I remember this when in was young. I'm 58. Now. I love ur channel. Prime video has a movie (Yes a movie) abt kitchens to make life easier for the housewife. And abt supermarkets and cashier training. Omg. I actually worked as a cashier on one of those supermarket cash registers where it looked like a giant calculator and u had to input every single item. They also showed on the modern kitchen one the washers. And the dishwashers. I was curious. Do u have a vintage dishwasher ? What abt the washer? I remember my grandma had a wringer washer. And when I was like 2 or 3 I would help her with the laundry. And I know u I can get one new at lehmanns store online. It's for the Amish. But that dishwasher? I would so use that it seemed so easy to use. And the parts so much easier to replace and take care of. Not that I don't like technology and computers. But personally I like the simplicity of things. I'm not a tech person so. If i could and can get anything from the older days that still works I def would buy it. Right now. I don't have anything from the old days tho. I love ur channel. It's refreshing. Also. Do u have a nesco roaster pan? They were popular back then too. Many blessings to u and ur family. Also love ur clothes. And hair style. It reminds me of my mom and her style when in was little
We had one of those “phone rests” on our phone when I was a kid in the late 60s- 70s. If you’re right handed, you want the rest on your left shoulder. Try it that way. 😉
Wow this seems like a real good gadget that I never knew I needed. I own a telephone like that and that looks like something I could use. Keep up the good work!
We had a thing similar to this on our phone when I was a young child in the 70' and 80's. The difference was it was sticky backed so it stuck to the receiver and was made of plastic but still cradled your shoulder so you could talk hands free.
Hi Laci - I like your gadget, what ever works I guess 😊 I remember seeing them in magazines some years ago. I never got one of them , but I guess I should have I could use one right now , because I go around the house with it on my shoulder, anyway. Take care and be safe. Love until your next video. 😊❤️❤️❤️
We still have a landline. When the power goes off, that still works. Sometimes when we have bad weather, our power is off for a few days so, we still have the landline to call for help.
My dad had something like this on his phone in his auto shop when I was little... So in the 80s. Lol What's funnier is my daughter not understanding that is a phone and how to dial. 😂😂😂
Those were designed more for use at a desk than while ironing. My Grandmother had one on her home phone when her old 303 (think I Love Lucy) was 'uptated' to a 505 in nineteen sixty something and until that was again 'updated' to a Trimline in the mid 1970s. She lived in Glendale 8, Calif. from 1946 through 2009, telephone was CI (Citrus) 3 - 3243.
What a cool gadget my friend! I for one think I just couldn’t have passed this up back in the day! 😁It does the trick! Looking pretty in that dress sweetheart Xxx 😘
I recently found this really cool item that will allow you to use a rotary phone. I’m not sure if you have heard of It but it’s called the Xlink Bluetooth Gateway. Essentially you connect your cellular phone to the Xlink using Bluetooth, then you connect the landline wire from the rotary phone to this device and it will allow you to receive calls!
Haven’t seen one of these in a while. They were usually seen in offices or anyone that had to write down notes etc.from anyone calling like customer services. It always looked clunky on the phone but it sure helped avoiding a crink in the neck! Great video and take care..📞 🇨🇦

We had one of those “phone rests” on our phone when I was a kid in the late 60s- 70s. If you’re right handed, you want the rest on your left shoulder. Try it that way. 😉
Hi Laci! I was so excited to see a new vid from you this morning! Drinking my coffee and watching ☺💖
Yay! Thanks for watching!
Yay ! It’s Vintage Monday ❤️🎉
Yay!!
I seem to remember a military phone in Germany had something like that.
Hello Laci,
Love this gadget video! Thank you so much!
Inna ♥️♥️♥️💄🎀👒👜🍒🦋👗🐈
So glad you enjoyed! Thank you!!
I bet if the phone were on the table behind you it would be much easier. I remember these so well. Thanks!
Maybe so. I was trying to have it in picture, but that would probably work better.
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor Yes, of course, I wasn't even thinking about you needing to position the phone for the video. lol
This is hysterical!! I wonder how many sold???
Wow this seems like a real good gadget that I never knew I needed. I own a telephone like that and that looks like something I could use. Keep up the good work!
We had one in my house growing up.
This one makes me happy for "Hands free" speaker cell phone.
Right?! Ahh modern conveniences.
The Tele-Rest was mainly used in offices where it was a staple for many, many years.
Thank you!! Oh yes, I can’t hold my phone with my shoulder too long or I get a kinked neck!
We still have a landline. When the power goes off, that still works. Sometimes when we have bad weather, our power is off for a few days so, we still have the landline to call for help.
Oh that’s good it works in those times!
My dad had something like this on his phone in his auto shop when I was little... So in the 80s. Lol
What's funnier is my daughter not understanding that is a phone and how to dial. 😂😂😂
Such pretty nails!
📼agreed
Thank you!!
I remember those !
I have that same rotary phone!! Although it doesn’t look as brand new as yours does
What a cool gadget my friend! I for one think I just couldn’t have passed this up back in the day! 😁It does the trick!
Looking pretty in that dress sweetheart Xxx 😘
It was a fun one to test, and would’ve been handy for sure. Ahh thanks so much my friend!!

Cool gadget! 💖
Nice Device, can’t wait to see your Thanksgiving and Christmas things 🦃🎄
Thank you! I am getting excited for the holidays.
Haven’t seen one of these in a while.
They were usually seen in offices or anyone that had to write down notes etc.from anyone calling like customer services.
It always looked clunky on the phone but it sure helped avoiding a crink in the neck!
Great video and take care..📞 🇨🇦
I have seen the thick plastic 80’s ones in offices, but none like this older version.
Thank you!
I enjoy your channel !😎🐾🦋🍁🌻🍨🕰🏡😽
I’m so glad!
